The fist case of legionnaires' disease in Israel is described. In a previously healthy woman, the disease was manifested by a rapidly progressive pneumonia, which was unresponsive to conventional therapy. The diagnosis was confirmed by positive serologic tests and the demonstration of the responsbile microorganism in the patient's lung tissue. Legionnaires' disease should now be suspected in patients with unexplained severe pneumonia, even in countries in which this disease has not been previously recognized.

Sixty-eight of 282 neurosyphilitic patients (24.1%) had repetitive adult onset seizures of unknown cause. Serum and CSF FTA-ABS were more accurate diagnostic tests than the non-treponemal serologic tests. The latter tests were reactive in only 54.5% of patients. In addition to standard anticonvulsants, the patients received 20-24 million units procain penicillin G IM during a three week period. The therapeutic failure rate among these patients was 17.3% in contrast to the nonsyphilitic patients who had 21.8-38.6% failure rates. The prognosis of seizures in GPI patients was the worst regardless…

BACKGROUND: Celiac disease, also known as gluten-sensitive enteropathy, is a chronic inflammation disease of the small intestinal mucosa. Detection of Ig-A antigliadin antibodies (AGA) and antiendomysial antibodies (EMA) in serum is important in the diagnosis and screening for celiac disease. Antiendomysial antibodies have greater sensitivity compared to antigliadin antibodies. It has been reported that the prevalence of celiac disease is higher in children with Down syndrome than the other autoimmune conditions. The aim of the present study was to investigate the incidence of celiac disease i

INTRODUCTION: Cat scratch disease is an infection due to Bartonella henselae. It is one of the principal causes of benign chronic adenopathy … ropriate surgical indication. The diagnosis is made even more difficult because of delayed specific serologic tests as for B. henselae.

Approximately 20% of 52 Japanese males with invasive amebiasis confirmed by gel diffusion precipitin test (GDP) were positive by both Treponema pallidum hemagglutination test (TPHA) and nontreponemal antigen tests, and an additional 20% were positive by TPHA alone. However, none of 109 GDP-negative Japanese males without invasive amebiasis were positive on these serologic tests for syphilis. At least 2 bisexuals and 4 homosexuals were among those with invasive amebiasis. All of these biased males were positive on both TPHA and nontreponemal antigen tests. Four of the biased males had liver abs…

Congenital syphilis still represents a worldwide public health problem. If left untreated, it can lead to fetal demise and high neonatal morbidity and mortality. Unfortunately, in the last decade, there has been a resurgence of cases in the U.S. This review discusses the ongoing problem of this preventable congenital infection, vertical transmission and clinical manifestations while providing a guidance for the evaluation and management of infants born to mothers with reactive serologic tests for syphilis.

We present a case of atypical presentation of secondary syphilis with extensive lymph node involvement and pulmonary lesions, initially suspected as lymphoma. The patient presented with weight loss, dry cough, chest pain, palpable lymph nodes in several peripheral chains, and multiple pulmonary nodules and masses on chest imaging. The key features for secondary syphilis diagnosis were a lymph node biopsy suggestive of reactive lymphadenopathy, positive serologic tests for syphilis, and complete recovery after antisyphilitic treatment.

In this case of secondary syphilis, pustular lesions progressed rapidly to painful ulcerative lesions in a patient with early HIV infection. This rapidly progressive form of early syphilis has historically been called lues maligna praecox, a severe form of noduloulcerative secondary syphilis. Serologic tests for syphilis were positive and biopsy showed forms consistent with Treponema pallidum in the lesions. This case demonstrates how HIV infection may affect presentation and diagnosis of secondary syphilis.

Serologic tests for antineutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibodies can serve as markers for a number of necrotizing vasculitides and other inflammatory disorders. In the case of Wegener's granulomatosis, an immunofluorescent cytoplasmic pattern and immunoassay for proteinase 3 are quite specific for the disease and are capable of serving as additional criteria for diagnosis. As with any laboratory test, however, results are to be interpreted in the whole clinical and pathologic framework of the disease.

Microagglutination (MA), microcomplement-fixation (CF), indirect microimmunofluorescence (micro-IF) and Weil-Felix (WF) tests were compared for sensitivity and specificity in detection of antibodies against Rickettsia prowazekii and for serologic diagnosis of epidemic typhus fever. Paired sera from hospitalized Ethiopian patients suffering from febrile illness were examined. Purified particulate rickettsial antigens used in MA, CF and micro-IF tests were made from infected yolk sacs by differential centrifugation from molar NaCl and from NaCl-sucrose, D20=1.1491, pH 5.5. The incidence of syphilis has been increasing in the USA since 2000. Notably, the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic negatively impacted the … ositive syphilis infection. Determining the correct stage of syphilis infection combines results of serologic tests, patient history, and physical examination findings. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is one of the most common rheumatic disease, which is primarily diagnosed by clinical history, physical examination, and laboratory tests, including a large number of biochemical and biologic markers. Recently, it has been shown that the amino acid citrulline, which is a unit of filaggrin, is a substantial component of the antigenic epitope, and enzyme immunoassays which use synthetic citrullinated peptide are highly effective tests for the detection of autoantibodies against cyclic citrullinated peptide (CCP), which are a new a highly specific marker for RA. The aim

Varying doses of protoscolices of Echinococcus granulosus were injected intraperitoneally into Mongolian jirds, Swiss mice, and golden hamsters. After 4 months the animals were killed and the numbers of developing cysts counted. Jirds were by far the most susceptible hosts. Doses of 500 protoscolices produced 100% infection rates in both weanlings and adults. Comparable infection rates in weanling mice required inocula of 5,000 protoscolices, but even at this dose hamsters were refractory to infection. Three of 5 jirds developed pulmonary cysts after intravenous administration of 500 protoscol

The microscopic agglutination test (MAT) is the gold standard for sero-diagnosis of leptospirosis because of its unsurpassed diagnostic specificity. It uses panels of live leptospires, ideally recent isolates, representing the circulating serovars from the area where the patient became infected. A dilution series of the patient's serum is mixed with a suspension of live leptospires in microtiter plates. After incubating for about 2 hr at 30°C, results are read under the dark-field microscope. The titer is the last dilution in which ≥ 50% of the leptospires have remained agglutinated. Seroconve

OBJECTIVES: Recently, four publications have applied Sigma metrics to infectious disease serology testing. Three studies applied Sigma metrics to assays in a blood bank setting, whereas one used anti-toxoplasma testing in a diagnostic laboratory. One of the four studies applied the approach to microtitre plate enzyme immunoassays, whereas the other three were on fully automated chemiluminescent assay. The approaches used by each study differed in the approach used to calculate imprecision, measured as a percentage coefficient of variation, and bias. All four studies used the difference between

Camels are highly susceptible to brucellosis caused by Brucella melitensis and Brucella abortus. Difficulties can arise in diagnosis of camel brucellosis, especially as this disease provokes only few clinical signs in contrast to its clinical course in cattle. Because none of the commonly used serological test can be perceived as a perfect test for Brucella diagnosis in camel and most serological tests used for camels have been directly transposed from cattle without adequate validation, an incorrect diagnosis may occur when diagnosis is based on serology alone. Of imminent concern is the fact
