Quality of life in children with sickle cell hemoglobinopathy.

OBJECTIVE: To identify specific domains and traits that are most affected in patients with sickle cell anemia and traits with respect to normal children. METHODS: Children attending the regional hemoglobinopathy center at IGMC, Nagpur in age group of 8-14 years were assessed. Of 52 children studied, 25 had sickle cell anemia (SCA), 12 had sickle cell trait (SCT) and 15 wre normal control. The (quality of life (QOL) was assessed using multidimensional interview based questionnaire. RESULTS: All domains, physical, psychosocial, cognitive and morbidity were affected. In SCA playing and mobility…

Unusual coexistence of Stewart-Treves syndrome and sickle cell anaemia: a case of dual pathology.

Chronic lymphoedema can rarely be complicated by an angiosarcoma. This combination called Stewart-Treves syndrome usually observed in upper … the histological diagnosis. The investigation for haemoglobinopathy also suggested the presence of sickle cell trait. This report describes a multifocal tumour as a rare manifestation of Stewart-Treves syndrome in a post-filariasis case with sickle cell trait, which is an extremely uncommon combination.

Renal medullary carcinoma as an incidental finding in a horseshoe kidney: case report and literature review.

Renal medullary carcinoma is rare and extremely aggressive neoplasm that typically affects young patients of African decent who demonstrate sickle cell trait or disease. Since the original description in 1995, only few cases have been reported outside the United States. A 29 year-old Canadian male of Afro-Caribbean decent with sickle cell trait developed right-sided hemiparesis due to brain infarct. During the clinical work-up, a 3 cm renal tumor was detected in a horseshoe kidney. The patient died suddenly 2 weeks after the presentation of massive non-neoplastic pulmonary thromboembolism, con…

Hematological Correlates of Hemoglobinopathies in Women of Reproductive Age With Anemia: A High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)-Based Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Anemia continues to pose a significant public health challenge, particularly among women of reproductive age. Despite ongoing nu … ndicating anisocytosis. HPLC analysis revealed abnormal hemoglobin patterns in 44% of participants. Sickle cell trait was the most common abnormality (26%), followed by sickle cell disease (11%) and β-thalassemia trait (7%). RDW showed significantly superior discriminative ability for predicting hemoglobinopathies compared to mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and mean …

Hemoglobin G trait and S trait in the same patient.

We describe a subject who had a positive sickle solubility test and a routine alkaline electrophoretic pattern showing three major hemoglobulin bands migrating to the A, S, and A2 positions. In addition, the non-heme protein carbonic anhydrase appeared to be increased, suggesting the presence of a split A2. Two major hemoglobin bands separated on agar gel electrophoresis using a citrate buffer, pH 6.2. A non-S hemoglobin migrating to the position of Hb S was identified as GPhiladelphia. The electrophoretic pattern of GPhil/S trait most closely resembles S/beta+ thalassemia or sickle cell trait…

Sickle cell haemoglobin, thalassaemia and G-6-PD enzyme deficiency genes in Garasiya tribe inhabited malaria endemic areas of Sirohi District, Rajasthan (India).

Venous blood samples of 368 apparently healthy and unrelated adult individuals (both male and female) belonging to a primitive tribe, Garasiya inhabitating malaria hyperendemic areas of Sirohi district, Rajasthan (India) were investigated by standard and recommended techniques for evidence of erythrocyte genetic disorders; sickle cell haemoglobin, beta-thalassaemia syndromes and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PD) enzyme deficiency (Gd). Sickle cell genes encountered in 23 (6.25%) Garasiya tribals. Of these, 22 (5.97%) showed heterozygous sickle cell gene(Hb-AS or trait) and one (0.27%)

Screening for hemoglobinopathies during routine hemoglobin A1c testing using the Tosoh G7 Glycohemoglobin Analyzer.

Approximately 5.1% of the US population has diabetes mellitus, and hemoglobin (Hb) A1c levels are routinely measured to monitor long-term gl … aline and acid electrophoresis, solubility testing for Hb S, and clinical parameters. In 252 cases, sickle cell trait was identified with a mean retention time (RT) of 1.44 (SD +/-0.02) min. In 82 cases, Hb C trait was identified with a mean RT of 1.66 +/-0.03 min. RTs for other Hb abnormalities, including sickle cell disease, homozygous Hb C disease, C Harlem trai …

Rare Combinational Hemoglobinopathies.

Hemoglobinopathies are genetic defects that result in the abnormal formation and composition of globin chains in the hemoglobin molecule. Sickle cell disease is one of the more common forms of genetic malformation, while Hemoglobin (Hb) Arab, Lepore, Korle-Bu, Kansas, D-Punjab, and Hasharon are uncommon presentations. Herein, we describe the case of a young patient who presented with a low hemoglobin level and was subsequently diagnosed with a rare combination of Hemoglobin Korle-Bu, D-Punjab, and sickle cell trait.

Red blood cell-derived microparticles: An overview.

The red blood cell (RBC) is historically the original parent cell of microparticles (MPs). In this overview, we describe the discovery and the early history of red cell-derived microparticles (RMPs) and present an overview of the evolution of RMP. We report the formation, characteristics, effects of RMP and factors which may affect RMP evaluation. The review examines RMP derived from both normal and pathologic RBC. The pathologic RBC studies include sickle cell anemia (SCA), sickle cell trait (STr), thalassemia intermedia (TI), hereditary spherocytosis (HS), hereditary elliptocytosis (HE), her…

Kinetics of antimalarial antibodies in children with common haemoglobinopathies in a Tanzanian population.

INTRODUCTION: Haemoglobin gene mutations have long been associated with protection against malaria, as evidenced by the concordant geographic distribution of these mutations with malaria parasite prevalence and by the reduced risk of severe disease among individuals carrying thalassaemia or sickle cell trait alleles. However, the mechanisms underlying this protection remain poorly understood. Although the precise correlates of immunity to malaria are still debated, antibody-mediated responses are widely considered to play a critical role. In this study, we investigated changes in putatively pr…

SMARCB1-deficient renal medullary carcinoma with an EML4::ALK fusion gene in a Japanese woman.

Renal medullary carcinoma is a rare, high-grade carcinoma arising in the renal medulla, which is usually associated with sickle cell trait, and there are very few documented cases in the Japanese population. We report a case of renal medullary carcinoma, immunohistochemically defined as SMARCB1 deficient, in a 67-year-old Japanese woman without a history of sickle cell trait. Somatic mutation of SMARCB1 and an EML4::ALK fusion gene were identified by comprehensive genomic profiling. Computed tomography revealed metastatic lesions in the retrocaval lymph nodes, liver, and bronchus. Six cycles o…

Multiple thromboembolic events associated with bilateral superior vena cava and anomalous drainage into the left atrium.

A 49-year-old female patient presented with acute-on-chronic chest pain. She was diagnosed with multiple systemic thromboemboli, including myocardial infarctions, bilateral chronic pulmonary emboli, ischaemic stroke, deep venous thrombosis and superficial thrombophlebitis. She had a background of sickle cell trait. Cardiac magnetic resonance showed bilateral superior vena cava (SVC). The right-sided SVC (RSVC) was joined by the right upper pulmonary vein and drained anomalously into the left atrium. This caused a small volume right to left shunt. The persistent left SVC drained into the right …
