BACKGROUND: As compared with ablative fractional CO2 laser, ablative fractional erbium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Er:YAG) laser is considered to be a more suitable treatment option for photoaged skin in Asians due to the lower incidence of postinflammatory hyperpigmentation.
OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy and safety of ablative fractional Er:YAG laser (ablative fractional resurfacing [AFR]) and nonablative fractional 1550-nm Er:glass laser (non-AFR [NAFR]) in the treatment of photoaging.
METHODS: This was a prospective, randomized, double-blinded comparative study. In three sessions,

Oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) affects approximately 1/20,000 people worldwide. All forms of OCA exhibit generalized hypopigmentation. Reduced pigmentation during eye development results in misrouting of the optic nerves, nystagmus, alternating strabismus, and reduced visual acuity. Loss of pigmentation in the skin leads to an increased risk for skin cancer. Two common forms and one infrequent form of OCA have been described. OCA1 (MIM 203100) is associated with mutations of the TYR gene encoding tyrosinase (the rate-limiting enzyme in the production of melanin pigment) and accounts for approxi

People with skin of color constitute a wide range of racial and ethnic groups-including Africans, African Americans, African Caribbeans, Chinese and Japanese, Native American Navajo Indians, and certain groups of fair-skinned persons (eg, Indians, Pakistanis, Arabs), and Hispanics. It has been predicted that people with skin of color will constitute a majority of the United States and international populations in the 21st century. There is not a wealth of data on racial and ethnic differences in skin and hair structure, physiology, and function. What studies do exist involve small patient popu

INTRODUCTION: Trichilemmomas are a form of benign adnexal neoplasm with differentiation toward the follicular outer sheath. Nevus sebaceous (NS) of Jadassohn is a congenital malformation characterized as a nonhereditary hamartoma of the adnexal structures of the skin, mainly the pilosebaceous unit. NS represents a fertile field for the development of secondary adnexal neoplasms, commonly benign but occasionally malignant. To our knowledge, one case of a pigmented desmoplastic trichilemmoma (DT) has been reported in the English literature.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 36-year-old m

Vitiligo is an acquired depigmenting disease characterized by the loss of pigmentation from the skin due to selective killing of pigment forming cells (melanocytes) by cytotoxic T cells (CD8+ T cells). The pathogenesis of vitiligo has broad spectrum ranging from genetic, biochemical and immunological factors. Based on these multifactorial aetiologies several hypotheses have been suggested with substantial evidence. Recent advances in the understanding of immunopathogenesis of the disease have opened new avenues that may be translated into effective treatment strategies. There is requirement of

Melanin produced by melanocytes, primarily determines human skin color and protects against ultraviolet radiation. However, excessive melanin deposition can lead to skin conditions such as freckles, age spots, and moles, potentially causing aesthetic concerns and psychological distress. Consequently, there is significant research interest in developing safe and effective whitening products that inhibit melanin synthesis. Bioactive peptides represent a promising compound category that effectively reduces melanin synthesis with minimal side effects. This review explores melanin pigmentation, ide

Melanocytes are dendritic cells localized in skin, eyes, hair follicles, ears, heart and central nervous system. They are characterized by the presence of melanosomes enriched in melanin which are responsible for skin, eye and hair pigmentation. They also have different functions in photoprotection, immunity and sound perception. Melanocyte dysfunction can cause pigmentary disorders, hearing and vision impairments or increased cancer susceptibility. This review focuses on the role of melanocytes in homeostasis and disease, before discussing their potential in regenerative medicine applications

We present two patients with vitamin D3 deficiency caused by insufficient exposure of the skin to sunlight. The deficiency was due to the dark pigmentation of the skin in the first case and caused by constant wearing of veil and all-covering clothes as well as by insufficient exposure to sunlight in the second case. Both patients developed osteomalacia with musculoskeletal problems; they had typical laboratory test results (elevated alkaline phosphatase and serum calcium in the low normal range) and radiologically evident, non-dislocated fractures (insufficiency fractures). Treatment with vita

The purpose of this chapter is to review some of the common congenital and hereditary skin diseases in domestic animals. Alopecia, abnormalities in pigmentation, and structural defects of the dermis are addressed in a problem-solving format. Features of other miscellaneous congenital and hereditary skin diseases are discussed. Specific breed and species involvement and the ages of onset are identified. Modes of inheritance and information on recognizing patterns of inheritance by pedigree analysis are presented. Clinical and pathologic findings important to differential diagnosis of these cond

All forms of skin cancer are uncommon among southwestern American Indians. The estimated average annual incidence of melanoma is approximately 1 per hundred thousand population or less than one tenth of that currently reported for Anglos (non-Hispanic whites) residing in the same region. This study correlates the clinical and pathologic features of melanoma in 18 American Indian patients. A marked predilection for palms, soles, and subungual locations was displayed. Additionally, three patients presented with mucous membrane primaries and two with ocular melanomas. Advanced disease stage at di

Evidence for adaptation of human skin color to regional ultraviolet radiation suggests shared and distinct genetic variants across populations. However, skin color evolution and genetics in East Asians are understudied. We quantified skin color in 48,433 East Asians using image analysis and identified associated genetic variants and potential causal genes for skin color as well as their polygenic interplay with sun exposure. This genome-wide association study (GWAS) identified 12 known and 11 previously unreported loci and SNP-based heritability was 23-24%. Potential causal genes were determin

<p>BACKGROUND: Fractional photothermolysis (FP) is a popular treatment option for photodamaged skin and addresses shortcomings of ablative skin resurfacing and nonablative dermal remodeling. Previous studies have demonstrated that FP using the 1550nm wavelength has led to improvement of ultrastructural changes and clinical effects associated with photodamaged skin in the deeper dermal structures, while treatment with the 1927nm wavelength has shown clinical effects in the superficial dermis. Both wavelengths produce precise microscopic treatment zones (MTZs) in the skin. The two wavelengths us

Exogenous ochronosis refers to accumulation of homogentisic acid metabolites in tissues, manifesting as pigmentation of affected tissues. Phenolic compounds are most commonly implicated, including hydroquinone, quinine, phenol, resorcinol, mercury, and picric acid. The affected connective tissues exhibit brownish discoloration when heavily pigmented and the histopathological appearance is characteristic with "banana-shaped" ochre-colored pigment deposits. Herein, the authors describe a rare case of exogenous ochronosis involving the conjunctiva, sclera and skin, as a result of chronic use of T

Vitiligo is an acquired disorder of pigmentation characterized by the development of white macules and patches on the skin. Although multiple theories have been proposed to understand the underlying pathophysiology behind the pigment loss, the exact etiology remains unknown. Vitiligo universalis is an extremely rare variant that causes nearly complete depigmentation of the entire body surface. Treatment is challenging, especially when pigment loss is generalized and diffuse. We present a unique case of a patient with vitiligo universalis that had remained untreated and stable for >20 years unt

Black skin is more resistant to the deleterious effects of ultraviolet radiation than white skin. A higher melanin content and a different m … in the supra basal epidermis, none of these changes was found in black skinned subjects. Increased skin pigmentation appears to be primarily responsible for the observed differences in skin responses. Our data could provide an explanation as to why black skin is less susceptible to sunburn, photoaging, and skin carcinogenesis.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous findings provide important clues to systemic autoimmune rheumatologic diseases (SARDs), but presentation varies across skin types and may be underrecognized in patients of color. In the Philippines, diagnostic challenges are amplified by limited specialists and a lack of pigmented-skin learning materials for general practitioners.
OBJECTIVE: To develop online educational resources on cutaneous manifestations of SARDs in Filipino skin (phases 1 and 2a), and characterize the demographic and clinical profile of these patients (phase 2b).
METHODS: Phase 1 videos were create

BACKGROUND: Facial skin has a distinct histologic architecture and reveals specific dermatoscopic features. Diagnosis of lentigo maligna on the face is often challenging because of the overlap of clinical and morphologic features with other lesions.
OBJECTIVES: We aim to show the value of reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) as a noninvasive diagnostic tool for facial lesions and to increase knowledge of RCM morphologic features among the scientific community.
METHODS: We describe a series of 4 facial lesions on severely sun-damaged skin that was evaluated via RCM immediately after face-to-
