Sleep disorders in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are both diagnostic (nocturnal reliving) and prognostic. Poor sleep worsens the daytime symptomatology of PTSD and makes it resistant to treatment. However, no specific treatment is codified in France to treat these sleep disorders although sleep therapies (cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia, psychoeducation and relaxation) have proven for years to be effective in treating insomnia. Therapeutic sessions can be part of a therapeutic patient education program, which is a model for the management of chronic pathologies. It allows fo

Although generally considered as mutually exclusive, violence and sleep can coexist. Violence related to the sleep period is probably more frequent than generally assumed and can be observed in various conditions including parasomnias (such as arousal disorders and rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder), epilepsy (in particular nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy) and psychiatric diseases (including delirium and dissociative states). Important advances in the fields of genetics, neuroimaging and behavioural neurology have expanded the understanding of the mechanisms underlying violence and i

There is a general tendency to restrict the notion of sleep disorders to insomnia and consequently to limit treatment to the prescription of hypnotics. However, it is very often of benefit to prescribe psychotropic agents, in particular antidepressants, not only in insomnia but also in certain cases of hypersomnia, parasomnia and dysomnia associated with organic diseases. In some conditions, however, antidepressants may either induce or aggravate sleep disorders. This is the case with a number of psychostimulants that occasionally induce insomnia. It is also true of the tricyclic antidepressan

Excessive daytime sleepiness is a major symptom in cases of the obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome. Most often, it is vastly improved by treatment with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). The most effective way to confirm its disappearance is through wakefulness maintenance testing. If residual sleepiness remains, despite CPAP, further diagnostic investigation must be carried out. Firstly, it must be assessed whether the treatment is fully effective (apnea hypopnea index<10/h) by examining flow limitations under treatment (polysomnography) and whether it is sufficiently used (>6

OBJECTIVE: Research on sleep in bulimia nervosa (BN) is methodologically varied and yields inconsistent findings. This review synthesised BN-sleep studies and examined whether comorbid mood disorders contribute to sleep disturbance.
METHOD: PsycINFO, Medline (Ovid), and Scopus were searched for English or French quantitative studies comparing sleep health variables between individuals with diagnosed BN and healthy controls. Extracted data included study design, sample characteristics, sleep and BN measures, and key findings. Methodological quality was evaluated using a validated risk-of-bias

UNLABELLED: This restrospective study is aimed at increasing the understanding of the relation of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), attention deficit disorder (ADD), and hyperactivity to the various symptoms of sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) to aid in the diagnosis and implementation of treatment protocols for a child's cognitive function and emotional regulations. Increasing better sleep can enhance a child's success in school and may improve attention, behavior, and neurocognitive processes, which can contribute to the child's future health.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study

Huntington's disease (HD) is a neurodegenerative disorder caused by a CAG repeat expansion in the HD gene. Besides psychiatric, motor and cognitive symptoms, HD patients suffer from sleep disturbances. In order to screen a rat model transgenic for HD (tgHD rats) for sleep-wake cycle dysregulation, we monitored their circadian activity peaks in the present study. TgHD rats of both sexes showed hyperactivity during the dark cycle and more frequent light cycle activity peaks indicative for a disturbed sleep-wake cycle. Focusing on males at the age of 4 and 14 months, analyses of receptor levels i

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Stroke can result in or exacerbate various sleep disorders. The presence of behaviors such as daytime sleepiness poststroke can indicate underlying sleep disorders which can significantly impact functional recovery and thus require prompt detection and monitoring for improved care. Actigraphy, a quantitative measurement technology, has been primarily validated for nighttime sleep in healthy adults; however, its validity for daytime sleep monitoring is currently unknown. Therefore this study aims to identify the best-performing actigraphy sensor and algorithm for detecting day

Mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) is associated with persistent sleep-wake dysfunction, including insomnia and circadian rhythm disruption, which can exacerbate functional outcomes including mood, pain, and quality of life. Present therapies to treat sleep-wake disturbances in those with TBI (e.g., cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia) are limited by marginal efficacy, poor patient acceptability, and/or high patient/provider burden. Thus, this study aimed to assess the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of morning bright light therapy, to improve sleep in Veterans with TBI (NCT03578003)

Epidemics of encephalitis lethargica (EL), from 1917 to the 1930s, are an important milestone in the history of movement disorders. Today, the two best-known features of EL are somnolence and parkinsonism but the full clinical picture was variable and complex. States of wakeful inactivity--as opposed to drowsiness--were often described both in the acute and postacute stages and were referred to in the EL literature as "lethargy" or "torpor." The study described here is based on a survey of clinical descriptions published in English, French, and German from 1917 to 1942. Its focus is on the his

BACKGROUND: Deep brain stimulation is a treatment for advanced Parkinson's disease and currently tuned to target motor symptoms during daytime. Parkinson's disease is associated with multiple nocturnal symptoms such as akinesia, insomnia, and sleep fragmentation, which may require adjustments of stimulation during sleep for best treatment outcome.
OBJECTIVES: There is a need for a robust biomarker to guide stimulation titration across sleep stages. This study aimed to investigate whether evoked resonant neural activity (ERNA) is modulated by sleep.
METHODS: We recorded local field potentials

BACKGROUND: The psychological care of abused children in the child protection system is an urgent issue in Japan. Child abuse has a serious impact on children's emotion and behavior, but there is virtually no evidence about how child abuse affects sleep, which is closely related to behavioral and emotional control. In this study, we sought to identify sleep habits and suspected sleep disorders among abused children and adolescents admitted to residential care facilities in Japan and to investigate their association with emotional and behavioral problems.
METHODS: The study targeted 273 abused

Sleep is a natural and recurring state of life. Long-term insomnia can lead to physical and mental fatigue, inattention, memory loss, anxiety, depression and other symptoms, imposing immense public health and economic burden worldwide. The sleep and awakening regulation system is composed of many nerve nuclei and neurotransmitters in the brain, and it forms a neural network that interacts and restricts each other to regulate the occurrence and maintenance of sleep-wake. Adenosine (AD) is a neurotransmitter in the central nervous system and a driver of sleep. Meanwhile, the functions and mechan

STUDY OBJECTIVES: There are large individual differences in the homeostatic response to sleep deprivation, as reflected in slow wave sleep (SWS) and electroencephalogram (EEG) spectral power, which have largely been left unexplained. Recent evidence suggests the possible involvement of the activity-regulated cytoskeleton-associated protein (ARC) gene. Here we assessed the effects of the "c.*742 + 58C > T non-coding single nucleotide polymorphism" of the human ARC gene (rs35900184) on sleep-physiological and waking-neurobehavioral responses to total sleep deprivation (TSD).
METHODS: N = 50 hea

OBJECTIVE: Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) is associated with reduced nocturnal dipping of blood pressure (BP) and sleep disruption in adults, and these features confer an increased risk of cardiovascular events. As SDB prevalence in children peaks during the preschool years, we investigated nocturnal dipping and sleep fragmentation in preschool children with SDB.

Histamine and hypocretin neurons are localized to the hypothalamus, a brain area critical to autonomic function and sleep. Narcolepsy type 1, also known as narcolepsy with cataplexy, is a neurological disorder characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness, impaired night-time sleep, cataplexy, sleep paralysis and short latency to rapid eye movement (REM) sleep after sleep onset. In narcolepsy, 90% of hypocretin neurons are lost; in addition, two groups reported in 2014 that the number of histamine neurons is increased by 64% or more in human patients with narcolepsy, suggesting involvement of

The present article is an attempt to perform a conceptual clinical and physiological analysis of a large spec- trum of sleep-related phenomena called parasomnias in children, based on data from three independent in- stitutions. Parasonmias appear in the process of falling asleep, at the time of sleep stage changes, and upon awakening. They are common for both healthy children and those with neurological and psychiatric disorders. Brief descriptions of clinical pictures of several groups of parasomnias and their polysomnographic characteristics are presented. Instances of stereotyped rhythmic m
