BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterised by impairments in social interaction, communication and the presence of repetitive behaviours. Recent advancements in brain-computer interface (BCI) technologies have demonstrated potential benefits in enhancing cognitive, social and communication skills in individuals with ASD. However, the effectiveness of BCI-based interventions in ASD rehabilitation remains inconsistent across studies. Therefore, this protocol outlines a systematic review and meta-analysis to synthesise the evidence on the effectiven

This study examines the quality of life, stress, and coping strategies of parents raising children with autism spectrum disorder in Kathmandu Valley. These parents face unique challenges, including caregiving demands, societal stigma, and limited support resources. Limited research exists on the psychosocial impacts these parents experience in Nepal, making this study crucial for understanding their struggles. This cross-sectional mixed-method study was conducted in autism care centers across Kathmandu Valley. Quantitative data from 140 parents was collected using validated scales (Autism Pare

BACKGROUND: Designing effective health campaigns requires a thorough understanding of the intended audience. For stigmatized health issues like substance use disorder and mental health disorders, campaigns must be strategic, culturally competent, and evidence based. This manuscript details the process of creating a comprehensive statewide health campaign focused on mental health awareness and substance use prevention in Texas.
METHODS: This study employs a multifaceted data collection approach. It includes a review of relevant health communication literature and an environmental scan to evalu

BACKGROUND: Despite high morbidity and mortality, patients with injection drug use associated infective endocarditis (IDU-IE) lack standardized care, and experience prolonged hospitalization and variable substance use disorder (SUD) management. Our study's objective was to elicit perspectives of health care workers (HCWs) who deliver care to this population by understanding their perceived patient, provider, and system-level resources and barriers.
METHODS: This qualitative study included interviews of HCWs providing care to patients with IDU-IE from January 2017 to December 2019 at a single

INTRODUCTION: Compulsory drug rehabilitation is a major governmental response to illicit drug use in Vietnam and other countries in Asia. Long-term compulsory rehabilitation is associated with negative health, social and economic outcomes. The transition to community-based services for people released from compulsory drug rehabilitation has been problematic not only in Vietnam. This study utilized the WHO Health System Building Blocks Framework to examine the opportunities and challenges for people with substance use disorders (SUD) who are released from compulsory drug rehabilitation back int

Cornelia de Lange syndrome (CdLS) is a cohesinopathy causing delayed growth and limb deficits. Individuals with CdLS have mild to profound intellectual disability and autistic features. This study characterizes the behavioral phenotype of children with CdLS, focusing on autistic features, maladaptive behaviors, and impact of age. Children with CdLS (5-18 years) were administered normed instruments to characterize autism features (Childhood Autism Rating Scale, CARS), maladaptive behaviors (Aberrant Behavior Checklist), and adaptive skills (Vineland Adaptive Behaviors Scales). CdLS features and

The Asperger Syndrome is - in contrast to early childhood autism - a disorder at the lighter end of the autism spectrum. Although first described in 1943, it was included in the ICD-10 not before 1992. The knowledge about this lighter autistic disorder spread only slowly. The increasing prevalence rates can be explained by the increased knowledge about this disorder and the growing clinical experience. In contrast to the public that gives repeated medial attention to it, and to would-be affected who seem to see an attractive excuse for social problems in an Asperger diagnosis, many psychiatris

In psychiatry, tensions have often arisen between biological and social approaches, despite their interconnection. Social psychiatry has evolved alongside changing understandings of mental health and its ties to broader social and geopolitical determinants. Global factors such as economic inequality, migration, and social exclusion are increasingly recognized as key influences on mental health outcomes. Nonetheless, challenges like stigma, lack of access, and resource limitations persist. The Biopsychosocial Model remains central to social psychiatry, offering an integrated framework that cons

This article examines health communication campaigns aimed at preventing alcohol consumption among women who are pregnant or attempting to become pregnant. Relevant communication materials were gathered and a qualitative review was conducted. A majority of the campaigns followed the tenets of protection motivation theory by focusing on the threat variables of severity and vulnerability, as well as emphasizing response efficacy. Few campaigns focused on costs or self-efficacy. Future fetal alcohol spectrum disorders prevention initiatives should attempt to reduce perceived costs, as well as inc

Speakers systematically overestimate their communication effectiveness (Keysar & Henly, 2002). We argue that doing so is adaptive, reducing the risk of social anxiety and withdrawal from social situations. This hypothesis was tested by having speakers who scored low and high for fear of negative evaluation (FNE), a hallmark of social phobia, attempt to convey a specific meaning of ambiguous statements to a listener and then estimate their communication effectiveness. Low-FNE speakers consistently overestimated their effectiveness, expecting the listener to understand their intended meaning mor

The study examined developmental changes in autistic symptoms retrospectively in a sample of 28 verbal children and adolescents with autism. Individuals with Asperger syndrome, PDD-NOS, and related medical conditions were not included in the study. We compared autistic symptoms present at the retrospective assessment and during the 4- to 5-year age period using the ADI-R. Our findings revealed a significant improvement in the three domains relevant for the diagnosis of autism, independent of age or IQ level. Improvement occurred in more symptoms from the social than the communication domain, a

Deinstitutionalization is a complex process that in the past was often misunderstood solely as a run down or even closure of psychiatric hospitals. Although chronically mentally ill patients were prevented from long term hospitalisation some fundamental mistakes were repeated often: patients were simply discharged without any preparations and outpatient care was badly organised. In some cases this led to therapeutic neglect, social disintegration, homelessness, incarceration or other forms of dramatic loss of quality of life. These findings are internationally confirmed although there are rema

The number of persons suffering from chronic mental disease but living outside the psychiatric hospital in the community, is rising, resulting in an increasing demand for facilities for occupation, occupational therapy and rehabilitation and for paid employment. The past few years have seen a distinct increase in the number of sheltered workplaces for the mentally ill. This development has also led to qualitative differentiation in the offers. In the region of Westphalia there are currently some 940 work places in special departments for the mentally handicapped at workshops for the disabled.

The nature and evaluation of a primary prevention project for students during the transition to high school are presented. In order to facilitate students' coping efforts during this transition, the project sought to increase the level of social support available as well as to reduce the degree of flux and complexity in the school setting. Midyear and end of ninth-grade assessments were done of Project and matched Control students' self-concepts. Their perceptions of the school environment, and their eighth- and ninth-grade attendance and grade averages examined. By the end of ninth grade, Pro

Cannabis social equity programs have been implemented in many U.S. jurisdictions to address disparities associated with cannabis prohibition and expand participation in the legal cannabis market. While these initiatives reflect important policy goals, their implementation intersects with emerging public health concerns. Legal cannabis markets have expanded availability and access to high-potency cannabis products, and studies in several jurisdictions have reported increases in frequent cannabis use and cannabis use disorder (CUD) following legalization. Social equity frameworks often designate

Unemployment is viewed as one of the more stressful of life events that an adult can experience. Job loss leads to decreased social status, disrupts family and social roles, produces financial strain, and loss of self esteem, all of which have detrimental consequences for mental health. We studied psychiatric symptoms in 269 unemployed adults with dependent children in Baltimore; one-half of the sample had returned to work 1 year following unemployment. A comparison group of 92 community residents who were continuously employed were also interviewed. Using a stressful life events perspective,

Despite the high prevalence of and significant psychological burden caused by anxiety disorders, as few as 25% of individuals with these disorders seek treatment, and treatment seeking by African-Americans is particularly uncommon. This purpose of the current study was to gather information regarding the public's recommendations regarding help-seeking for several anxiety disorders and to compare Caucasian and African-American participants on these variables. A community sample of 577 US adults completed a telephone survey that included vignettes portraying individuals with generalized anxiety

Over the past 25 years, our understanding of the risks conferred by "behavioral inhibition to the unfamiliar" (BI) has grown tremendously, yet many questions remain. BI represents the persistent tendency to show extreme reticence, fearfulness, or avoidance in novel situations or with unfamiliar people. Prospective studies of high-risk offspring, selected community children, and unselected epidemiologic samples converge to suggest that BI confers specific risk for social anxiety disorder in early and middle childhood and adolescence. Later outcomes are less clear, with some studies suggesting a
