Personality heterophily and friendship as drivers for successful cooperation.

Cooperation is widespread and arguably a pivotal evolutionary force in maintaining animal societies. Yet, proximately, what underlying motivators drive individuals to cooperate remains relatively unclear. Since 'free-riders' can exploit the benefits by cheating, selecting the right partner is paramount. Such decision rules need not be based on complex calculations and can be driven by cognitively less-demanding mechanisms, like social relationships (e.g. kinship, non-kin friendships, dyadic tolerance), social status (e.g. dominance hierarchies) and personalities (social and non-social traits);…

Social role functioning in Parkinson's disease: A mixed-methods systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that often impedes activities of daily living (ADL) and social functioning. Impairment in these areas can alter social roles by interfering with employment status, household management, friendships, and other relationships. Understanding how PD affects social functioning can help clinicians choose management strategies that mitigate these changes. METHODS: We conducted a mixed-methods systematic review of existing literature on social roles and social functioning in PD. A tailored search strategy in five databases

Social support moderates association between posttraumatic growth and trauma-related psychopathologies among victims of the Sewol Ferry Disaster.

Disasters have numerous harmful effects on the mental health status of trauma-exposed people. We investigated the differences in the association between trauma-related psychopathologies and posttraumatic growth according to the perceived social support level among victims of the Sewol Ferry disaster on April 16, 2014, in South Korea. Data from 241 bereaved family members, survivors, and family members of survivors were used. The Duke-UNC Functional Social Support Questionnaire, Posttraumatic Growth Inventory, PTSD Checklist-5, Posttraumatic Embitterment Disorder Self-Rating Scale, Patient Heal

Loneliness and social isolation as risk factors for mortality: a meta-analytic review.

Actual and perceived social isolation are both associated with increased risk for early mortality. In this meta-analytic review, our objective is to establish the overall and relative magnitude of social isolation and loneliness and to examine possible moderators. We conducted a literature search of studies (January 1980 to February 2014) using MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Social Work Abstracts, and Google Scholar. The included studies provided quantitative data on mortality as affected by loneliness, social isolation, or living alone. Across studies in which several possible confounds were stat

Gender Differences in Cardiac Rehabilitation Information Needs, Barriers and Participation Decisions Among Patients With Coronary Heart Disease: Fairlie Decomposition Analysis.

AIM: Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is an effective intervention for improving outcomes in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD). However, the actual participation rate is unsatisfactory and exhibits significant gender disparities. This study aimed to investigate gender-specific determinants of the decision to participate in CR among patients with CHD, together with underlying causes. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of 264 patients with CHD from 3 Chinese tertiary hospitals between February 2024 and February 2025. Data were collected using questionnaires ba

Predictors of postpartum depression in a sample of Egyptian women.

INTRODUCTION: Postpartum depression (PPD) represents a considerable health problem affecting women and their families. The aims of this study were to: (a) compare female patients with PPD to normal controls with regard to some biopsychosocial variables, (b) correlate between the severity of PPD and some clinical and biological variables, and (c) to predict some risk factors for PPD. METHOD: Sixty female patients with PPD were compared with 60 healthy postpartum females (control group). Patient and controls were subjected to: (1) a complete psychiatric and obstetric examination, (2) psychometr

Recognition of unfamiliar predators in domestic horses through only visual predator cues.

Acoustic, olfactory, and visual predator cues trigger various adaptive responses among a variety of prey species even when they are under human protection since birth. Previous studies have found that domesticated animals show increased vigilance, stress, flight, and aggregation behaviors in response to predation threats. These investigations, however, did not directly test visual threatening cues alone in animals that communicate more with body language than vocalizations while considering individual temperament and social status. The current study aims to address this issue. Eighteen horses …

Association of social support and religiosity with survival among women with breast cancer in a low-income population in the Southeastern United States.

BACKGROUND: Large social networks have been associated with better overall survival after a breast cancer diagnosis in some but not all study populations. This study evaluated associations of social support and religiosity/spirituality with survival among Black and White women with breast cancer of largely low socioeconomic status in the United States (US). METHODS: The study used data from the prospective Southern Community Cohort Study, which enrolled approximately 86,000 adults in the southeastern US during 2002-2009. A total of 1,347 Black and White women with incident breast cancer were

[Study, after stopping treatment, of the consequences of the injection of male hormones in mares on their social behavior and hierarchical position].

The androgenization of a more belonging to a social group where it held a stable hierarchic rank, or a mare recently admitted to this group, increases their status in the hierarchic order and the position acquired is subsequently maintained; in some cases, they continue to rise in the hierarchic order long after the injections of male hormones has been stopped. Some elements of the social behaviour of a stallion appear during the treatment; these elements may persist long after the mares have regained their female hormone balance, corroborated by the establishment of a standard pregnancy.

The psychosocial factors influencing paediatric kidney transplantation access, their outcomes and the patient and family's perceived quality of life: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Kidney transplantation is the gold standard treatment for children and young people (CYP) with stage 5 chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, psychosocial and structural factors including race, socioeconomic status and family context can delay or limit access to transplantation. This systematic review explores the breadth of psychological, social and societal factors influencing transplant access, outcomes and quality of life. We included peer-reviewed quantitative, qualitative and mixed-method studies with primary data. Medline, PsychInfo, CINAHL and Web of Science were searched for papers pu

Predictors of functional health status of end stage renal disease patients.

Potential predictors of the functional health status of 125 end stage renal disease (ESRD) patients were studied cross-sectionally. When health status was assessed by the physician with the Karnofsky Index, younger patient age, lower ESRD severity of illness, lower comorbidity severity, and higher albumin levels were predictors of better health [R-square = 0.48]. When patients self-reported their health status with the Duke Health Profile, African-American race, higher family support, lower family stress, and lower ESRD severity were positive predictors [R-square = 0.23]. Caste-, work-, and descent-based discrimination as a determinant of health in social epidemiology.

Social epidemiology explores health in the context of broad social determinants of health, where the boundary lines between health and politics appear increasingly blurred. Social determinants of health such as caste, discrimination, and social exclusion are inherently political in nature, hence it becomes imperative to look at health through a broader perspective of political philosophy, ideology, and caste that imposes enormous obstacles to a person's full attainment of civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights. Caste is descent based and hereditary in nature. It is a character

Stroke liaison workers for stroke patients and carers: an individual patient data meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Many patients experience depression, social isolation and anxiety post stroke. These are associated with a poorer outcome. Ameliorating these problems may improve patient wellbeing. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the impact of a healthcare worker or volunteer whose multi-dimensional roles have been grouped under the title 'stroke liaison worker'. SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Stroke Group Trials Register (searched February 2009), the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) (The Cochrane Library Issue 1, 2009), MEDLINE (1966 to 2009), EMBASE (1980 to 2009) an

Health and well-being of women family carers: a comparative study with a generic focus.

OBJECTIVE: To examine differences between women family carers of people with chronic illnesses or disabilities and a group of women 'non-carers' in self-reported physical health, psychological well-being, life satisfaction, social support and feelings of overload. METHOD: Using a computer-assisted telephone interviewing system, a random survey of more than 26,000 households was conducted in Victoria to identify and then interview a representative sample of family carers of people with disabilities or chronic illnesses. The women in the sample (n = 857) were then compared with a sample of wome

Repercussions of racial, gender, and class inequities on food and nutrition conditions: Implications for public health.

BACKGROUND: Food and nutrition are shaped by power structures that perpetuate historical injustices. In marginalized and low-income contexts, racial, gender, and class inequities restrict access to adequate and culturally appropriate food, with serious public health impacts. These disparities are reinforced by colonial legacies, institutional racism, gender oppression, and neoliberal policies that commodify nourishment and erase traditional knowledge. This study examines how these intersecting oppressions shape global nutrition inequities and proposes transformative, justice-oriented approache

Comparing early years and childhood experiences and outcomes in Scotland, England and three city-regions: a plausible explanation for Scottish 'excess' mortality?

BACKGROUND: Negative early years and childhood experiences (EYCE), including socio-economic circumstances, parental health and parenting style, are associated with poor health outcomes both in childhood and adulthood. It has also been proposed that EYCE were historically worse in Scottish areas, especially Glasgow and the Clyde Valley, compared to elsewhere in the UK and that this variation can provide a partial explanation for the excess of ill health and mortality observed among those Scottish populations. METHODS: Multiple logistic regression analysis was applied to two large, representati

Assessment of general health and quality of life in patients with acne using a validated generic questionnaire.

OBJECTIVES: The study was designed to utilize the SF-36, a validated generic questionnaire, to assess acne patients' view of their general health and quality of life. METHODS: The subjects were 454 acne patients (237 males, 217 females) visiting an outpatient clinic at Qassim University. An Arabic translation of the SF-36 questionnaire, culturally adapted and validated, was used to assess eight life-quality dimensions. Data regarding demographics, disease grade, duration, and treatment were also included in the questionnaire. The internal consistency reliability of the multi-item scales was a

Parent-child relationship disorders: what do the Child Vulnerability Scale and the Parent Protection Scale measure?

While scales exist to aid clinicians in the assessment of parent-child relationship disorders, there are minimal data regarding their clinical usefulness. This study examined the ability of parent responses to questions regarding the child's health, behavior, and development to predict total scores on the Child Vulnerability Scale and the Parent Protection Scale. Of 120 potential participants, 103 parents (92% mothers, 69% white, 54% married, 44% lower socioeconomic status) with children aged 2-5 years completed the Child Health and Family Functioning Questionnaire. Logistic regression yielded

The diagnosis of dementia in the elderly. A comparison of CAMCOG (the cognitive section of CAMDEX), the AGECAT program, DSM-III, the Mini-Mental State Examination and some short rating scales.

The performance of CAMCOG, the cognitive section of the CAMDEX, is compared in a non-random sample of 222 elderly people with diagnoses based on AGECAT and on DSM-III criteria, and with the MMSE and some short rating scales. With a cut-off point of 69/70 and AGECAT organic syndrome as the criterion, the sensitivity of CAMCOG was 97% and the specificity 91%. However, 21% of DSM-III diagnoses of dementia scored above this cut-off; these were mostly mild cases. The correlation between CAMCOG and MMSE scores was 0.87, and the advantage of CAMCOG may be more apparent in longitudinal studies. Multiv
