Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging study of a normal tarsal joint in a Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris).

BACKGROUND: In this research, using computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), we provide a thorough description of the standard appearance of a right tarsal joint in a Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris). CT scans were performed using a bone and soft tissue window setting, and three-dimensional surface reconstructed CT images were obtained. The MRI protocol was based on the use of Spin-echo (SE) T1-weighted and Gradient-echo (GE) STIR T2-weighted pulse sequences. Magnetic resonance (MR) images were taken in the transverse, sagittal and dorsal planes. We also performed anatomica

Morbid obesity may increase dislocation in total hip patients: a biomechanical analysis.

BACKGROUND: Obesity has reached epidemic proportions in the United States. Recently, obesity, especially morbid obesity, has been linked to increased rates of dislocation after THA. The reasons are unclear. Soft tissue engagement caused by increased thigh girth has been proposed as a possible mechanism for decreased joint stability. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We asked (1) whether thigh soft tissue impingement could decrease THA stability, and if so, at what level of BMI this effect might become evident; and (2) how THA construct factors (eg, head size, neck offset, cup abduction) might affect stabil

From the archives of the AFIP: benign musculoskeletal lipomatous lesions.

Benign lipomatous lesions involving soft tissue are common musculoskeletal masses that are classified into nine distinct diagnoses: lipoma, lipomatosis, lipomatosis of nerve, lipoblastoma or lipoblastomatosis, angiolipoma, myolipoma of soft tissue, chondroid lipoma, spindle cell lipoma and pleomorphic lipoma, and hibernoma. Soft-tissue lipoma accounts for almost 50% of all soft-tissue tumors. Radiologic evaluation is diagnostic in up to 71% of cases. These lesions are identical to subcutaneous fat on computed tomographic (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) images and may contain thin septa. Lipom

Outcomes of microscopy‑assisted anterior cervical discectomy and fusion in a selected cohort with soft giant cervical disc herniation‑induced cervical spondylotic myelopathy.

INTRODUCTION: Giant cervical disc herniation (GCDH), defined as CDH occupying more than 50% of the spinal canal, presents a significant challenge in spinal surgery. This study specifically investigated a distinct subgroup of patients with soft GCDH, characterized by an absence of ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) or significant calcification. AIM: We aimed to assess the feasibility and efficacy of microscopy-assisted anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (MS-ACDF) for treating soft GCDH-induced cervical spondylotic myelopathy (GCDH-CSM). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This

Evaluation by Proton-Radiation Tests of a COTS-Embedded Computer Running the cFS Flight-Mission Software for a Nanosatellite.

This work aims to evaluate the feasibility of using a COTS-embedded computer as an on-board computer (OBC) for nanosatellites in academic projects. The prototype is based on the BeagleBone Black board, which runs the cFS flight-mission software on the RTEMS operating system. For evaluation purposes, 15.9 MeV proton-accelerated radiation tests were performed at the CNA facility to obtain the soft-error rate of the DDR3 SDRAM. Results show the presence of bit-flips in memory cells, leading to error propagation, and a burst of errors produced by SEEs, affecting the control logic of the SDRAM memo

[A CASE OF PERIVESICAL ABSCESS CAUSED BY MIGRATION OF A FOREIGN BODY FROM THE INTESTINAL TRACT].

A 76-year-old woman was referred to our department because of high fever and bladder irritative symptoms. Computed tomography revealed the presence of a heterogeneous mass with indistinct borders on the left anterior wall of the bladder. The lesion contained a linear hyperdense shadow. We initially suspected malignancy, such as urachal carcinoma or soft-tissue sarcoma. However, upon review of previous computed tomography scans, it was confirmed that the linear hyperdense shadow had migrated from the intestinal tract to the bladder. Considering the possibility of abscess formation caused by a f

MYELOLIPOMA COEXISTENCE WITH GLUCOCORTICOID AND ANDROGEN SECRETING ADRENOCORTICAL CARCINOMA: SLOW AND BENIGN CLINICAL COURSE.

We present a case of androgen and glucocorticoid secreting adrenocortical carcinoma with concomitant myelolipoma. A giant adrenal tumor which was initially nonfunctional was reassessed four years later due to the patient's refusal to treat. The patient was a 48-year-old woman with hypertension and acne lesions on the face. Laboratory findings were consistent with glucocorticoid and androgen hypersecretion. Computed tomography revealed a heterogeneously contrasting mass of 145x118x100 mm with lobular contour and soft tissue areas. The patient underwent left laparoscopic transperitoneal adrenale

Diagnosis and Characterization of Patellofemoral Instability: Review of Available Imaging Modalities.

Patellofemoral instability (PI) is defined as single or multiple episodes of patellar dislocation. Imaging modalities are useful for characterization of patellar malalignment, maltracking, underlying morphologic abnormalities, and stabilizing soft-tissue injuries. Using these findings, orthopedic surgeons can decide when to operate, determine the best operation, and measure degree of correction postoperatively in PI patients. Also, these methods assist with PI diagnosis in some suspicious cases. Magnetic resonance imaging is the preferred method especially in the setting of acute dislocations.

Multidetector computed tomography findings of abdominal aortic aneurysm and its complications: a pictorial review.

Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) are defined as abnormal dilatation of the abdominal aorta and are potential to catastrophic complications. With the advent of multidetector computed tomography (MDCT), this diagnostic modality has virtually replaced conventional angiography in many circumstances and has become an integral part of the evaluation of AAA. Its ability to assess the peri-aortic soft tissue and the exact extension of aneurysm as well as its excellent vascular opacification and multiplanar reconstruction make computed tomography angiography the best suited imaging modality for not on

Subcaruncular approach for the reconstruction of blowout fractures of medial orbital walls.

To obtain a wide and clean operative field for anatomic reconstruction of medial orbital blowout fractures, an alternative method called the subcaruncular approach has been performed. Between March 2008 and June 2010, this method was applied to the orbits of 41 patients with isolated pure medial orbital blowout fractures. A medial half conjunctival incision was made and extended meticulously to the subcaruncular area through preseptal plane under direct vision. Pre- and postoperative computed tomographic scans and ophthalmic examinations were performed, and clinical results were assessed. Post

Is this a variant of Lemierre's syndrome?

Lemierre's syndrome is an oropharyngeal infection leading to secondary septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein (IJV). It is classically anaerobic in origin and Fusobacterium necrophorum is the commonest pathogen. We report an unusual variant of this condition in a 68-year-man with uncontrolled diabetes mellitus who presented with extensive cellulitis of the left neck. No primary oropharyngeal sepsis was detected. Neck radiographs revealed soft tissue gas and computed tomography confirmed neck space infection with gas formation and complete thrombosis of the left IJV. Klebsiella pn

[Pelvic lytic lesion, and the need to suspect osteoporosis-related fractures].

Insufficiency fractures of the pelvis may be overlooked as a cause of hip or groin pain. These fractures occur in the elderly, usually those with pronounced osteopenia of the pelvis. Predisposing factors include corticosteroids, local irradiation and postmenopausal osteoporosis. These fractures are difficult to detect clinically and plain radiographs and other studies may be misleading, delaying diagnosis and treatment. A 65-year-old woman had left groin and hip pain for 2 months with no history of trauma. Plain radiographs showed lytic lesions in the left pubic rami. Bone scan revealed increa
