The Outcome of Cochlear Implantations in Deaf-Blind Patients: A Multicenter Observational Study.

OBJECTIVE: This multicenter study aimed to evaluate the auditory and speech outcomes of cochlear implantation (CI) in deaf-blind patients co … istic performances in children were assessed using the categories of auditory performance (CAP) and Speech Intelligibility Rating (SIR) scales, respectively. The word recognition score (WRS) was also used to measure speech perception ability in adults. The mean CAP, SIR, and WRS cores were compared between the deaf-only and deaf-blind groups before CI surgery and at "12 …

Etiology of hearing loss affects auditory skill development and vocabulary development in pediatric cochlear implantation cases.

BACKGROUND: Cochlear implantation (CI) is an effective treatment for severe-to-profound hearing loss patients and is currently used as the s … hresholds, age at CI, early auditory skill development, total development, monosyllable perception, speech intelligibility and vocabulary development in school age, and compared them for each etiology group. RESULTS: Among the 308 CI children registered for this survey, the most common etiology of hearing loss was genetic causes. The genetic etiology group showed the m …

[Improving the speech with a prosthetic construction].

A 12-year-old boy had problems with his speech due to a defect in the soft palate. This defect was caused by the surgical removal of a synovial sarcoma. Testing with a nasometer revealed hypernasality above normal values. Given the size and severity of the defect in the soft palate, the possibility of improving the speech with speech therapy was limited. At a centre for special dentistry an attempt was made with a prosthetic construction to improve the performance of the palate and, in that way, the speech. This construction consisted of a denture with an obturator attached to it. With it, an

Speech and velopharyngeal function following maxillary advancement in patients with cleft lip and palate.

The influence of maxillary advancement by osteotomy on speech was examined in 10 patients with cleft palates (6 males, 4 females). Ages at the time of surgery ranged from 16 to 26 years (mean, 19.5 yr). LeFort I and II osteotomies were performed in 9 patients and 1 patient, respectively. Preoperatively and postoperatively, hypernasality, nasal emission on pressure consonants, and articulation disturbances were evaluated perceptually, and velopharyngeal function was evaluated by lateral cephalographic and nasopharyngoscopic studies. Hypernasality, which had been judged preoperatively to be abse

Association between tooth loss-related speech and psychosocial impairment with cognitive function: A pilot study in Hong Kong's older population.

BACKGROUND: Tooth loss has been associated with cognitive decline, but the underlying mechanisms involving speech and psychosocial impairment remain unclear. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the impact of tooth loss-related speech and psychosocial impairment on cognitive function in Hong Kong's older population. METHODS: Seventy-six Cantonese-speaking participants between the ages of 51-92 were classified into three groups: patients with complete dentures (CD), partially edentulous patients with less than 10 occluding tooth pairs (OU <10), and at least 10 occluding tooth pairs (OU ≥10). Inexpensive Complex Hand Model Twenty Years Later.

Twenty years ago the author unveiled his inexpensive complex hand model, which reproduced every motion of the human hand. A control system programmed in the Forth language operated its actuators and sensors. Follow-on papers for this popular project were next presented in Texas, Canada and Germany. From this hand grew the author’s meter-tall robot (nicknamed ANNIE: Android With Neural Networks, Intellect and Emotions). It received machine vision, facial expressiveness, speech synthesis and speech recognition; a simian version also received a dexterous ape foot. New artificial intelligence feat

Neurobiology and neurodevelopmental impact of childhood traumatic stress and prenatal alcohol exposure.

PURPOSE: Research reveals that prenatal alcohol exposure and child trauma (i.e., abuse, neglect, sexual abuse) can have deleterious effects on child development across multiple domains. This study analyzed the impact on childhood neurodevelopment of prenatal alcohol exposure and postnatal traumatic experience compared to postnatal traumatic experience alone. Although the harmful effects of both have been well documented individually, there is no research documenting the concurrent effects of prenatal alcohol exposure and postnatal trauma on a child's developmental process. METHOD: Transdiscip

An instantaneous voice-synthesis neuroprosthesis.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have the potential to restore communication for people who have lost the ability to speak owing to a neurological disease or injury. BCIs have been used to translate the neural correlates of attempted speech into text1-3. However, text communication fails to capture the nuances of human speech, such as prosody and immediately hearing one's own voice. Here we demonstrate a brain-to-voice neuroprosthesis that instantaneously synthesizes voice with closed-loop audio feedback by decoding neural activity from 256 microelectrodes implanted into the ventral precentral

Thirty years of research on developmental neurolinguistics.

A body of medically important work has accumulated in the field of developmental neurolinguistics in the 30 years since Lenneberg set forth a research agenda for that field, consisting of the following: (1) the physiologic specialization or endowment for speech; (2) the genetic origin or natural history of vocalization and speech; (3) the nature of prelinguistic behavior, making possible the detection of any environmental (social) influences; (4) the development of motor-speech organization from birth; and (5) the limiting effects of deficient intelligence, hearing, and environmental stimulati

Emotional stimulated speech-based assisted early diagnosis of depressive disorders using personality-enhanced deep learning.

BACKGROUND: Early diagnosis of depression is crucial, and speech-based early diagnosis of depression is promising, but insufficient data and lack of theoretical support make it difficult to be applied. Therefore, it is valuable to combine psychiatric theories, collect speech recognition data for depression, and develop a practicable recognition method for depression. METHODS: In this study, 24 patients with major depressive disorders (MDDs) and 36 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited to participate in a multi-task speech experiment. Descriptive statistics and tests of variance were used to a

AI and speech-based identification of cognitive impairment in maintenance haemodialysis-the ASPIRE study.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment (CI) is common among individuals receiving maintenance haemodialysis and is associated with impaired treatment adherence, reduced quality of life, and mortality. However, CI often remains under-recognized in nephrology care because existing diagnostic approaches are resource-intensive. Speech-based artificial intelligence (AI) is a promising approach for identifying CI through analysis of speech characteristics. This proof-of-concept study investigated whether a speech-based AI model could identify Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA)-based CI and distinguish i

Schlieren imaging and video classification of alphabet pronunciations: exploiting phonetic flows for speech recognition and speech therapy.

Speech is a highly coordinated process that requires precise control over vocal tract morphology/motion to produce intelligible sounds while simultaneously generating unique exhaled flow patterns. The schlieren imaging technique visualizes airflows with subtle density variations. It is hypothesized that speech flows captured by schlieren, when analyzed using a hybrid of convolutional neural network (CNN) and long short-term memory (LSTM) network, can recognize alphabet pronunciations, thus facilitating automatic speech recognition and speech disorder therapy. This study evaluates the feasibili

Pilot Cap Acoustic Transparency for Pediatric Amplification Devices.

PURPOSE: Consistent hearing device use in young children with hearing loss is challenging for families. A hearing aid accessory, called a pilot cap, is often recommended to families to help mitigate the issues around device retention. Although pilot caps are commonly suggested to families, there is sparse data available about how acoustically transparent they are when used with a hearing aid. The purpose of this study was to measure the acoustic transparency when a hearing aid functions under a pilot cap accessory. METHOD: The Verifit 2 Hearing Aid Analyzer and the Speech Intelligibility Inde…

Optimizing Outcomes for Children With Phonological Impairment: A Systematic Search and Review of Outcome and Experience Measures Reported in Intervention Research.

PURPOSE: Reporting of outcome and experience measures is critical to our understanding of the effect of intervention for speech sound disorders (SSD) in children. There is currently no agreed-upon set of measures for reporting intervention outcomes and experiences. In this article, we introduce the Speech Outcome Reporting Taxonomy (SORT), a tool designed to assist with the classification of outcome and experience measures. In a systematic search and review using the SORT, we explore the type and frequency of these measures reported in intervention research addressing phonological impairment i
