Global burden of amphetamine, cannabis, cocaine and opioid use in 204 countries, 1990-2023: a Global Burden of Disease Study.

Drug use disorders (DUDs) are emerging global public health challenges. Here we investigated the global and regional estimates of the prevalence and burden of DUDs, including amphetamine, cannabis, cocaine and opioid use disorders, from 1990 to 2023 for 204 countries and territories by using the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023. Overall, trends in global age-standardized disability-adjusted life-years of DUDs increased from 169.3 (95% uncertainty interval (95% UI), 134.4-203.9) per 100,000 people in 1990 to 212.0 (95% UI, 179.2-245.6) in 2023. In 2023, both prevalence and burden of DUDs wer

Cause-specific mortality in Swedish males diagnosed with non-psychotic mental disorders in late adolescence: a prospective population-based study.

BACKGROUND: While risk of premature death is most pronounced among persons with severe mental illness, also milder conditions are associated with increased all-cause mortality. We examined non-psychotic mental (NPM) disorders and specific causes of natural death in a cohort of late adolescent men followed for up to 46 years. METHODS: Prospective cohort study of Swedish males (n=1 784 626) who took part in structured conscription interviews 1968-2005. 74 525 men were diagnosed with NPM disorders at or prior to conscription. Median follow-up time was 26 years. HRs for cause-specific mortality w

The DSM-III-R impulse control disorders not elsewhere classified: clinical characteristics and relationship to other psychiatric disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The authors reviewed available studies of DSM-III-R impulse control disorders not elsewhere classified in order to determine the relationship of these disorders to one another and to other psychiatric disorders. METHOD: The review focused on the demographic and clinical characteristics, phenomenology, family history, biology, and response to treatment of individuals with intermittent explosive disorder, kleptomania, pathological gambling, pyromania, and trichotillomania. Analysis was restricted to reports which either indicated use of operational diagnostic criteria or provided des

An Analysis of Sanctions and Respective Psychiatric Diagnoses in Veterans' Court.

This descriptive analysis is an examination of the extent to which a veteran's mental health diagnosis or the initial criminal charge committed before program enrollment relate to a greater propensity for sanctions, harsher sanctions, higher rates of relapse on substances, or overall program compliance. This is a retrospective descriptive analysis that focuses on those participants in the Harris County (Texas) Veterans' Court Program from June 2010 through April 2012 for whom the court had issued sanctions. The most clinically relevant association (p = .014) was found between veterans with sub

Sensation seeking, substance abuse, and psychopathology in treatment-seeking and community cocaine abusers.

Sensation seeking, substance abuse severity, and psychiatric disorders were systematically assessed in a clinical and a community sample of 335 cocaine abusers. In contrast to low-sensation-seeking cocaine abusers, high-sensation seekers exhibited more severe symptoms of substance abuse, exhibited more severe psychosocial impairment, were more likely to be polysubstance abusers, and had an earlier age of onset for substance use and abuse. High-sensation seekers were more likely to report both a lifetime history and family history of antisocial personality, attention deficit disorder, and condu

Benefits and Liabilities of Benzodiazepines and Z-Drugs: What We Know and What We Don't Know.

Benzodiazepines, first introduced in the 1960s as effective and safer alternatives to barbiturate sedative-hypnotics, are now widely viewed as having a high risk of overdose, abuse, addiction, and "dependency". These beliefs are contrary to extensive scientific evidence. Systematic research has shown that prescribed benzodiazepines are not prone to tolerance, dose-escalation, abuse, or addiction. Benzodiazepine abuse and overdose fatalities occur largely in the context of established polysubstance abuse. They are as effective as antidepressants and have fewer adverse effects but similar withdr

Secondary headache attributed to exposure to or overuse of a substance.

BACKGROUND: Secondary headaches attributed to exposure to or the overuse of a substance are classified under chapter eight in the International Classification of Headache Disorders 3rd edition. Three distinct sub-chapters consider: 1. Headache attributed to exposure to a substance, 2. Medication overuse headache, and 3. Headache attributed to substance withdrawal. Headache attributed to exposure to a substance refers to a headache with onset immediately or within hours after the exposure, while medication overuse headache is a headache occurring on 15 or more days per month that has developed

Smoking, substance abuse, psychiatric history, and burns: trends in adult patients.

Keeping in mind the historical importance of the associations among smoking, substance abuse, psychiatric history, and burns, we collected the relevant data as part of a larger research project. A retrospective casenote review was conducted using 1981, 1991, and 2001 as reference years to identify the trends in acute adult admissions. In keeping with the increase in the total number of patients, burns victims who were smokers increased in numbers. The percentage increased in 2001 from other reference years, but it was not statistically significant. The results of our study also show no signifi

Validity of the MCMI Drug Abuse Scale with drug abusing and psychiatric samples.

The validity of the Drug Abuse Scale (T) from the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI) was studied by administering the MCMI to 75 White male veterans who were seeking treatment for opioid or cocaine dependence and 60 White male veterans without diagnoses of drug dependence who were receiving psychiatric care. Only (39.4%) of the drug-abusing sample was classified correctly by obtaining base rate (BR) scores above the clinical relevant cut-off of 74, whereas, only 12% of the psychiatric sample was misclassified by having obtained a BR above 74. The results suggest that the MCMI T Scale

A preliminary study of desipramine in the treatment of cocaine abuse in methadone maintenance patients.

Intravenous cocaine use is a major problem in methadone maintenance programs. In this pilot study of 16 cocaine-abusing methadone maintenance patients, 8 received desipramine and 8 received no medication other than methadone. During an 8-week open trial the desipramine patients reported significantly less cocaine craving and had less cocaine use than the other patients.

Diagnostic precision of the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test in assessing cognitive deficits in substance use disorders.

The Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) is a widely used neuropsychological instrument to assess executive functions related to cognitive flexibility and abstract reasoning. However, there is a lack of studies investigating the diagnostic precision of this instrument in substance use disorders. In this study, we aimed at assessing the sensitivity and specificity of the WCST in discriminating the performance of participants with substance use disorder with cognitive deficits and participants from the general population without cognitive deficits. The sample comprised three groups of participants

Physical illness in psychiatric inpatients: comparison of patients with and without substance use disorders.

BACKGROUND: Physical comorbidities and substance use are commonly reported in patients with mental disorders. AIM: To examine somatic comorbidity in patients with substance use disorders (SUD) compared to patients with mental disorders but no SUD. METHODS: Lifetime prevalence data on mental and physical health status were collected from inpatients in 12 mental health care facilities in five different countries. Differences in somatic comorbidity were examined by means of logistic regression analysis controlling for age and gender. RESULTS: Of 2,338 patients, 447 (19%) had a primary or secon

Mental health in individual versus team sports.

Across all sports, there has been increasing realization that mental health symptoms and disorders in athletes are common. More specifically, there has been increasing study of differences in mental health between individual and team sport athletes. However, this topic is still under-developed, and no comprehensive review on the topic has been undertaken. This manuscript aims to provide a narrative review of mental health symptoms and disorders, spanning depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and substance use and other addictive disorders, in individual versus team sports. Findings revealed t

Partners in crime: A 21-year cohort comparison of people who commit serious crimes together with those who act alone.

BACKGROUND: Perpetrators who act together violently occur frequently in police and media discussions, but are rarely the focus of forensic psychiatric research. AIMS: We aimed to characterise people who act together when committing a serious crime and to map the frequency of such crimes over 21 years in Finland. METHODS: Data for the study were retrieved from the national database of forensic psychiatric examinations for the period 2000-2020, with reports on file for nearly all people charged with serious criminal offences in the country. Index cases were defined as those with two or more pe

Quantifying skip-out information loss when assessing major depression symptoms.

Large-scale mental health surveys screen participants for the presence of the core diagnostic criteria of a mental disorder such as major depressive disorder (MDD). Only participants who screen positive are administered the full diagnostic module; the remainder "skip-out." Although this procedure adheres faithfully to the psychiatric classification of mental disorders, it limits the use of the resulting survey data for conducting high-quality research of importance to scientists, clinicians, and policymakers. Here, we conduct a series of exploratory analyses using the Virginia Adult Twin Study

Relationships between substance use disorders, 'severe mental illness' and re-arrest in a county detention facility: A 4-year follow-up cohort study.

BACKGROUND: A growing body of literature demonstrates strong association between poor mental health and criminal recidivism, but research from county jails is limited. AIMS: Our aim was to examine the relationship between re-arrest and severe mental illnesses-schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder-together and separately and with substance use disorders, separately and as comorbid conditions, in a mid-sized county jail cohort in the southeastern United States. METHODS: We examined the full cohort of 8097 individuals who were booked into the County Detention Facility be

Use of Antidepressants in Patients with Co-occurring Depression and Substance Use Disorders.

This chapter reviews antidepressant treatment considerations and recommendations for patients with co-occurring depression and substance use disorders. Depression and substance use disorders are highly comorbid conditions. Substance use disorders are chronic disorders that result in a cluster of symptoms indicating that an individual continues to use a substance despite significant problems resulting from their use. About 17 million Americans have an alcohol use disorder, and another approximately 7 million individuals have other drug use disorders (not including alcohol) in the United States.

Behavioural manifestations of anabolic steroid use.

BACKGROUND: Bone strength is influenced by the stiffness and spatial distribution of mineralized tissue. Bone mineral density (BMD) is used to assess osteoporosis but is limited in evaluating microarchitectural and geometric changes. We investigated Trabecular Bone Score (TBS), BMD, and hip structural analysis (HSA) in celiac disease (CD) patients. METHODS: A cross-sectional study compared bone density factors in CD patients with a healthy control group matched for gender, BMI, and age. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) assessed BMD at the femoral neck, hip, and lumbar spine (L1-L4). TBS

Coping, treatment planning, and treatment outcome: discussion.

The articles presented in this issue are discussed within the context of the general literature on coping and coping style. The focus of this special issue was to determine if these articles are both consistent with extant research and advance the field. We identify at least two general definitions of coping, as used in these articles. We refer to one definition as reflecting one's "coping style." This is largely a descriptive concept and closely related to one's enduring behavioral traits. It is closely related to other personality characteristics such as introversion-extroversion, stability,
