BACKGROUND: The author presents a 20-year experience leading cleft lip and palate surgical volunteer missions in Peru for CIRPLAST, a nonprofit volunteer plastic surgery goodwill program that has provided free surgery for patients with cleft lip and palate deformities in remote areas of Peru. The nose is the most prominent of all facial structures and is susceptible to many types of trauma. All soft tissue injuries of the nose have the potential to distort its appearance and adversely affect the patient's self-image and self-esteem. Anastomotic leaks and fistulas are unfortunate complications of esophageal-gastric surgery and esophageal dilations. Traditional management options have included surgery or a more conservative approach. There have been few reports describing the use of self-expandable plastic stents for the treatment of esophageal perforations and tracheoesophageal fistulas from benign diseases. We are reporting the use of self-expandable plastic stents for the treatment of non-malignant esophago-pleural fistulas occurring after esophagectomy in one case and esophageal perforation post dilation in the other.

BACKGROUND: The closure of wounds associated with soft tissue defects is surgically challenging, frequently requiring extensive plastic surgery and free flaps. The combination of dermal skin substitutes and split-thickness skin grafting is an innovative method used to cover such wounds. We incorporated this technique into the standard therapeutic armamentarium for complex injuries to the extremities. Clinical results of 56 patients thus treated are presented.
