Involvement of both adrenergic and cholinergic receptors in the cardiovascular effects of naloxone during hemorrhagic hypotension in the conscious rabbit.

Opiate receptor blockade with naloxone reverses the hypotension associated with severe hemorrhage in a variety of animal models. In the present study, we examined the mechanisms of naloxone's actions in conscious rabbits made hypotensive by hemorrhage. This was accomplished through pharmacological blockade of the efferent limbs of the sympathetic or parasympathetic nervous systems prior to naloxone injection. In addition, we examined the effects of naltrexone in the same model. Naloxone treatment in hypotensive-hypovolemic, conscious rabbits results in an increase in mean arterial blood pressu…

Small Fiber Polyneuropathy May Be a Nexus Between Autonomic Nervous System Dysregulation and Pain in Interstitial Cystitis/Bladder Pain Syndrome.

Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) is a highly heterogeneous chronic and debilitating condition which effects millions of women and men in the United States. While primarily defined by urinary symptoms and pain perceived to be emanating from the bladder, IC/BPS patients frequently have co-occurring conditions and symptoms, many of which affect diverse body systems related to autonomic nervous system function. The impact on the autonomic system appears to stem from increased sympathetic innervation of the urinary tract, along with increased systemic sympathetic tone and decrea

[Arterial hypertension and renal denervation : fantasy or reality ?].

Sympathetic hyperactivity is involved in the early stages of hypertension (HTN) and the mechanism persists during the course of HTN until organ damage and significant increase in cardiovascular risk. Radiofrequency renal denervation (RDN) using a percutaneous catheter inserted into the renal artery helps to destroy adventitial sympathetic nerve fibers, interrupting the connections between the renal sympathetic system and the central nervous system. After the first very encouraging clinical results in a small number of patients, the SIMPLICITY HTN-3 study halted the expansion of the technique b

Do the deceleration/acceleration capacities of heart rate reflect cardiac sympathetic or vagal activity? A model study.

Despite increased application of the deceleration capacity (DC) and acceleration capacity (AC) of heart rate indices as indicators of autonomic nervous system (ANS) function, it remains controversial as to whether they reflect cardiac sympathetic or vagal activity. We addressed this problem using a cardiovascular system model that allows analysis of DC and AC under controllable levels of sympathetic and vagal activities. Multi-scale DCs and ACs with various timescales T and wavelet scales s were computed from the simulated RR interval series under randomly fluctuating levels of ANS activity, a

Dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system predicts the development of the metabolic syndrome.

CONTEXT: Stress is suggested to lead to metabolic dysregulations as clustered in the metabolic syndrome. Although dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system is found to associate with the metabolic syndrome and its dysregulations, no longitudinal study has been performed to date to examine the predictive value of this stress system in the development of the metabolic syndrome. OBJECTIVE: We examined whether autonomic nervous system functioning predicts 2-year development of metabolic abnormalities that constitute the metabolic syndrome. DESIGN: Data of the baseline and 2-year follow-up as

Pupillary dilation velocity is reduced in intensive care unit patients with septic shock.

BACKGROUND: Septic shock is common in the intensive care unit (ICU). The pathophysiology is poorly understood but prolonged sympathetic activation leading to autonomic dysfunction may be involved. Pupillary light response (PLR) is a fast, inexpensive, noninvasive way to measure autonomic nervous system function. The aim of the study was to observe dilation velocity of the PLR (PLRdil.vel. ) in patients with and without septic shock and explore whether other factors influenced the possible association. We hypothesized that the presence of septic shock in intensive care patients is associated wi

Diabetic neuropathy results in vasomotor dysfunction of medium sized peripheral arteries.

BACKGROUND: The effect of the sympathetic nervous system on peripheral arteries causes vasoconstriction when smooth muscle cells in the walls of blood vessels contract, which leads to narrowing of arteries and reduction of the blood flow. AIM: To compare sympathetic vasomotor activation of the brachial arteries in healthy subjects and patients with painful diabetic neuropathy; and therefore, to assess whether there is significant vasomotor dysfunction of medium sized arteries in diabetic neuropathy. METHODS: The study included 41 diabetic neuropathy patients and 41 healthy controls. Baseline…

Low-input Nucleus Isolation and Multiplexing with Barcoded Antibodies of Mouse Sympathetic Ganglia for Single-nucleus RNA Sequencing.

The cardiac autonomic nervous system is crucial in controlling cardiac function, such as heart rate and cardiac contractility, and is divided into sympathetic and parasympathetic branches. Normally, there is a balance between these two branches to maintain homeostasis. However, cardiac disease states such as myocardial infarction, heart failure, and hypertension can induce the remodeling of cells involved in cardiac innervation, which is associated with an adverse clinical outcome. Although there are vast amounts of data for the histological structure and function of the cardiac autonomic nerv

Sympathoexcitatory input from hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus neurons projecting to rostral ventrolateral medulla is enhanced after myocardial infarction.

Elevated sympathetic vasomotor tone seen in heart failure (HF) may involve dysfunction of the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus neurons that project to the rostral ventrolateral medulla (PVN-RVLM neurons). This study aimed to elucidate the role of PVN-RVLM neurons in the maintenance of resting renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA) after myocardial infarction (MI). In male rats, the left coronary artery was chronically ligated to induce MI. The rats received PVN microinjections of an adeno-associated viral (AAV) vector encoding archaerhodopsin T (ArchT) with the reporter yellow fluorescenc

Biphasic effects of orexin-A on autonomic nerve activity and lipolysis.

Previously, we showed that orexin-A, a 33-aa peptide, influences renal sympathetic nerve activity. Because the autonomic nervous system play … oses of orexin-A may regulate the lipolytic processes in adipose tissue through facilitation of the sympathetic nervous system, which is driven by histamine neurons through the H(1) receptor, and that the beta(3)-receptor may be involved in this enhanced lipolytic response. Low doses of orexin-A, on the other hand, may lower lipolysis by suppressing sympathetic nerve activi …

The renin-angiotensin system and the central nervous system.

One of several factors affecting the secretion of renin by the kidneys is the sympathetic nervous system. The sympathetic input is excitatory and is mediated by beta-adrenergic receptors, which are probably located on the membranes of the juxtaglomerular cells. Stimulation of sympathetic areas in the medulla, midbrain and hypothalamus raises blood pressure and increases renin secretion, whereas stimulation of other parts of the hypothalamus decreases blood pressure and renin output. The centrally active alpha-adrenergic agonist clonidine decreases renin secretion, lowers blood pressure, inhibi…

The enteric nervous system and gastrointestinal innervation: integrated local and central control.

The digestive system is innervated through its connections with the central nervous system (CNS) and by the enteric nervous system (ENS) within the wall of the gastrointestinal tract. The ENS works in concert with CNS reflex and command centers and with neural pathways that pass through sympathetic ganglia to control digestive function. There is bidirectional information flow between the ENS and CNS and between the ENS and sympathetic prevertebral ganglia. The ENS in human contains 200-600 million neurons, distributed in many thousands of small ganglia, the great majority of which are found in

Sympathectomy Effects on Intra-Abdominal Organ Catecholamine Levels in a Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic Rat Model.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder whose prevalence has continuously increased worldwide and is associated with dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system and, in particular, that of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS). The objective of this study was to analyze the interaction of DM and the SNS, building a model of sympathectomized diabetic rats to determine alterations in the content of CA (catecholamines) in different intra-abdominal organs. Sympathectomy was conducted with guanethidine (GNT). Additionally, DM was induced with STZ (Streptozotocin). Treatment with GNT decreased…

Linear and non-linear measures indicate gastric dysmotility in patients suffering from acute schizophrenia.

Cardiac autonomic dysfunction has been reported in patients suffering from schizophrenia. The aim of the present study was to evaluate gastric electrical activity in unmedicated patients suffering from acute schizophrenia in relation to their symptoms. Electrogastrography was performed before and after test meal ingestion in 26 patients suffering from schizophrenia and 26 matched controls. The non-linear measure approximate entropy (ApEn) was calculated for the first time from the obtained signal in addition to standardized measures. Results were correlated with the scales for the assessment o

Imaging dissociation in post-traumatic stress disorder.

Symptom provocation paradigms have been successfully developed to identify the neural correlates associated with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, especially dissociative behaviours, but have critical limitations. Transiently stimulating the sympathetic nervous system and/or the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis can enhance the stress response to symptom provocation and would help identify targets for personalised interventions.

Intrathoracic ganglioneuroma: case report.

Ganglioneuromas are rare, benign neoplasms, arising from the sympathetic nervous system. The posterior mediastinum is the most common location of this neurogenic tumour. We present this case because of the problem of its diagnosis. Our patient had in fact been under observation for about twenty years. The size of the tumour caused a restriction of the pulmonary function.
