Teaching an old scaffold new recognition tricks: oligopyrrolamide antagonists of IAPP aggregation.

A library of N-substituted oligopyrrolamides was designed to modulate the aggregation kinetics of islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP). IAPP is a hormonal peptide, co-secreted with insulin in the pancreatic β-cells. IAPP samples a variety of conformations, starting from a native random coil to membrane-associated α-helical intermediates and eventually terminates in the amyloid plaques rich in β-sheet structures. A growing body of evidence suggests that membrane bound α-helical intermediates are the key cytotoxic species that impair the functionality and viability of β-cells and contribute to the o

Malignant and pre-malignant oesophageal pathology in a South African teaching hospital.

BACKGROUND: South Africa (SA) has one of the highest global incidences of squamous cell carcinoma of the oesophagus (SCC). A decreasing incidence of oesophageal SCC in SA has been suggested. The study aimed to assess whether the incidence of these malignant histopathological subtypes has changed in this setting. METHOD: A retrospective review of histopathological reports on pre-malignant and malignant oesophageal lesions over three time periods (TP), namely: 2003-4 (TP1), 2008-9 (TP2) and 2013-14 (TP3) was carried out at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital, Durban, South Africa. RESULTS:

Computerized tomographic pattern of stroke seen in University of Portharcourt Teaching Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Data on Computed tomographic (CT) pattern of stroke abound in literature but they are predominantly from studies done in the Western world. Though most of the reports agree that ischaemic rather than haemorrhagic stroke is prevalent in most climes,no strictly radiology based study can be quoted in the Port Harcourt area. Thus there is the need for accurate data on stroke pattern in Nigerians of the South-South region. AIMS: This study was done to establish the CT pattern of stroke seen in University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) and to determine the relationship betwee…

Patient and Caregiver Perspectives of Preoperative Teaching for Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has developed into an important therapy for Parkinson disease, essential tremor, and dystonia with more nurses in varied settings often preparing patients and families for this type of surgery. This exploratory study sought to obtain patient and caregiver perspectives of the current DBS teaching for Parkinson disease, essential tremor, and dystonia; to improve the teaching; and to standardize the education. Using survey methodology, 41 patients with movement disorder and 32 caregivers completed surveys about the preoperative instructions they received. Data analysi…

Postoperative paediatric pain prevalence: A retrospective analysis in a university teaching hospital.

BACKGROUND: Overall pain prevalence in paediatric patients is well documented, but relatively little attention has been paid to pain prevalence and intensity on specific postoperative days within the first week following an operation. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate reported pain prevalence on the day of surgery and each day during the following week and to analyse pain trajectories. DESIGN: Retrospective study. SETTING: Single centre university hospital. PARTICIPANTS: 815 postoperative children and adolescents (age≤18 years) were included (female: 36%, age 9.8±5.8). Children with ear, nose, throa

Outcome of radical retropubic prostatectomy at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men in Nigeria and most cases present when the disease is already in an advanced stage. Radical prostatectomy for early prostate cancer is therefore not a commonly performed operation by urologists in Nigeria. We have had training and significant experience in radical retropubic prostatectomy. We, therefore, report the outcome of our initial experience. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We review the record of men with early prostate cancer who had radical retropubic prostatectomy in our institution from 2007 to 2015. RESULTS: There w

[Teaching practices of thoracic epidural catheterizations in different grade of anesthesia residents].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In this study, we aimed to clarify the importance of residency grade and other factors which influence the success of thoracic epidural catheterization in thoracotomy patients. METHODS: After the ethical committee approval, data were recorded retrospectively from the charts of 415 patients. All patients had given written informed consent. The thoracic epidural catheterization attempts were divided into two groups as second-third year (Group I) and fourth year (Group II) according to residency grade. We retrospectively collected demographic data, characteristics of t

Treatment Outcome of Severe Acute Malnutrition Cases at the Tamale Teaching Hospital.

Objective. This study investigated the treatment outcomes and determinant factors likely to be associated with recovery rate. Methods. A retrospective chart review (RCR) was performed on 348 patients who were enrolled in the outpatient care (OPC) during the study period. Results. Of the 348 cases, 33.6% recovered (having MUAC ≥125 mm), 49.1% defaulted, and 11.5% transferred to other OPC units to continue with treatment. There were 187 (53.7%) males and 161 (46.3%) females with severe malnutrition. The average weight gain rate was 28 g/kg/day. Controlling for other factors, patients who complet

Teaching NeuroImages: brain mass with hilar adenopathy: the importance of histologic diagnosis.

A 30-year-old man presented with weeks of progressive headaches, imbalance, and aphasia. Brain MRI revealed an enhancing left frontal mass (figure 1, A and B). Chest imaging revealed mediastinal and hilar adenopathy (figure 1, C and D). Metastatic cancer was initially suspected, but pulmonary lymph node aspiration revealed sarcoidosis (figure 2A). Subsequent brain biopsy revealed glioblastoma (figure 2B).
