Association of impulsivity, physical development, and mental health to perceptual-motor control after concussion in adolescents.

Sport-related concussion (SRC) can affect multiple domains including impairment in perceptual-motor control (PMC) in adolescents, potentially increasing subsequent injury risk. Research suggests that impulsivity, physical development, and mental health may be associated with PMC after SRC, but researchers have yet to examine this association. Adolescents (12-18y; n = 48) within 21 days of SRC were compared to 20 healthy adolescents with no concussion history using the Perception-Action Coupling Task (PACT), Barratt Impulsivity Scale (BIS), Pubertal Development Scale (PDS), Generalized Anxiety

Exploring the anatomical encoding of voice with a mathematical model of the vocal system.

The faculty of language depends on the interplay between the production and perception of speech sounds. A relevant open question is whether the dimensions that organize voice perception in the brain are acoustical or depend on properties of the vocal system that produced it. One of the main empirical difficulties in answering this question is to generate sounds that vary along a continuum according to the anatomical properties the vocal apparatus that produced them. Here we use a mathematical model that offers the unique possibility of synthesizing vocal sounds by controlling a small set of a

Cochlear implantation in children with cochlear nerve absence or deficiency.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate speech perception after cochlear implantation in children with cochlear nerve absence or deficiency. METHODS: A retrospective case review was performed to identify children who underwent cochlear implantation with cochlear nerve absence or deficiency. The cochlear nerve was evaluated by high-resolution three-dimensional T2-weighted fast spin echo MR in the oblique sagittal and axial planes. A deficient cochlear nerve was defined as a cochlear nerve that is smaller in diameter when compared with the adjacent facial nerve in the midportion of the internal auditory canal.

Separate channels for processing form, texture, and color: evidence from FMRI adaptation and visual object agnosia.

Previous neuroimaging research suggests that although object shape is analyzed in the lateral occipital cortex, surface properties of objects, such as color and texture, are dealt with in more medial areas, close to the collateral sulcus (CoS). The present study sought to determine whether there is a single medial region concerned with surface properties in general or whether instead there are multiple foci independently extracting different surface properties. We used stimuli varying in their shape, texture, or color, and tested healthy participants and 2 object-agnosic patients, in both a di

Racial differences in weight perception among Black and White women diagnosed with breast cancer.

PURPOSE: Black women are more likely than White women to have obesity, and obesity is associated with worse breast cancer prognosis. Weight perception, however, has not been studied as a potential mediator of obesity disparities in women with breast cancer. In this study, we sought to describe racial differences and the association of lifestyle factors with weight perception. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study design, Black and White women with a new primary breast cancer were surveyed about socio-demographics, weight perception, diet, and exercise habits. Height and weight were measured

Orbital haemorrhage and prolonged blindness: a treatable posterior optic neuropathy.

Two patients developed traumatic orbital haemorrhage resulting in prolonged blindness. Orbital decompression successfully reversed the visual loss, though both eyes had no light perception for at least 3 1/2 hours. The clinical findings suggest damage to the posterior optic nerve as cause of the visual loss. The optic nerve tolerance time to ischaemic injury may be longer than previously thought.

Rapid sequences of population activity patterns dynamically encode task-critical spatial information in parietal cortex.

We characterized the temporal dynamics of population activity in parietal cortex of monkeys as they solved a spatial cognitive problem posed by an object construction task. We applied pattern classification techniques to characterize patterns of activity coding object-centered side, a task-defined variable specifying whether an object component was located on the left or right side of a reference object, regardless of its retinocentric position. During a period in which the value of object-centered side, as defined by task events, remained constant, parietal cortex represented this variable us

Variables associated with days of school missed following concussion: results from the Sport Concussion Outcomes in PEdiatrics (SCOPE) study.

OBJECTIVE: To understand factors associated with missed academic time after concussion to improve support for patients. Our goal was to assess patient-specific predictors of total school time lost after pediatric/adolescent concussion. STUDY DESIGN: We performed a prospective cohort study of children and adolescents (8-18 years of age) seen within 14 days of concussion from seven pediatric medical centers across the United States. We collected outcomes via the Concussion Learning Assessment & School Survey (CLASS) and constructed a multivariable predictive model evaluating patient factors ass

The striatum in time production: The model of Huntington's disease in longitudinal study.

The unified model of time processing suggests that the striatum is a central structure involved in all tasks that require the processing of temporal durations. Patients with Huntington's disease exhibit striatal degeneration and a deficit in time perception in interval timing tasks (i.e. for duration ranging from hundreds of milliseconds to minutes), but whether this deficit extends to time production remains unclear. In this study, we investigated whether symptomatic patients (HD, N = 101) or presymptomatic gene carriers (Pre-HD, N = 31) of Huntington's disease had a deficit in time productio…

A functional MRI investigation of crossmodal interference in an audiovisual Stroop task.

The visual color-word Stroop task is widely used in clinical and research settings as a measure of cognitive control. Numerous neuroimaging studies have used color-word Stroop tasks to investigate the neural resources supporting cognitive control, but to our knowledge all have used unimodal (typically visual) Stroop paradigms. Thus, it is possible that this classic measure of cognitive control is not capturing the resources involved in multisensory cognitive control. The audiovisual integration and crossmodal correspondence literatures identify regions sensitive to congruency of auditory and v

Human amygdala response to unisensory and multisensory emotion input: No evidence for superadditivity from intracranial recordings.

The amygdala is crucially implicated in processing emotional information from various sensory modalities. However, there is dearth of knowledge concerning the integration and relative time-course of its responses across different channels, i.e., for auditory, visual, and audiovisual input. Functional neuroimaging data in humans point to a possible role of this region in the multimodal integration of emotional signals, but direct evidence for anatomical and temporal overlap of unisensory and multisensory-evoked responses in amygdala is still lacking. We recorded event-related potentials (ERPs)

Impairments in Multisensory Integration after Stroke.

The integration of information from multiple senses leads to a plethora of behavioral benefits, most predominantly to faster and better detection, localization, and identification of events in the environment. Although previous studies of multisensory integration (MSI) in humans have provided insights into the neural underpinnings of MSI, studies of MSI at a behavioral level in individuals with brain damage are scarce. Here, a well-known psychophysical paradigm (the redundant target paradigm) was employed to quantify MSI in a group of stroke patients. The relation between MSI and lesion locati

Number, time, and space are not singularly represented: Evidence against a common magnitude system beyond early childhood.

Our ability to represent temporal, spatial, and numerical information is critical for understanding the world around us. Given the prominence of quantitative representations in the natural world, numerous cognitive, neurobiological, and developmental models have been proposed as a means of describing how we track quantity. One prominent theory posits that time, space, and number are represented by a common magnitude system, or a common neural locus (i.e., Bonn & Cantlon in Cognitive Neuropsychology, 29(1/2), 149-173, 2012; Cantlon, Platt, & Brannon in Trends in Cognitive Sciences, 13(2), 83-91

Uncertainty in visual and auditory series is coded by modality-general and modality-specific neural systems.

Coding for the degree of disorder in a temporally unfolding sensory input allows for optimized encoding of these inputs via information compression and predictive processing. Prior neuroimaging work has examined sensitivity to statistical regularities within single sensory modalities and has associated this function with the hippocampus, anterior cingulate, and lateral temporal cortex. Here we investigated to what extent sensitivity to input disorder, quantified by Markov entropy, is subserved by modality-general or modality-specific neural systems when participants are not required to monitor

Spatial and temporal attention deficits following brain injury: a neuroanatomical decomposition of the temporal order judgement task.

We investigated spatial and temporal deficits following brain injury using the temporal order judgement (TOJ) task. Patients judged the order in which two letters appeared to the left and right of fixation. We measured the extent of any spatial bias and the temporal resolution of the decision. Temporal and spatial deficits on the TOJ task were significantly correlated. The spatial bias on the TOJ task was also correlated with the spatial bias on a neglect task and with unilateral deficits on an extinction task, but not with extinction itself. These spatial deficits were all associated with dam

β band oscillations as a correlate of alertness--changes in aging.

Older adults (>60 years) show attentional deficits in comparison to younger people (18-30 years). As beta-band EEG activity has been previously postulated to indicate attentional modulation in the visual system, we searched for possible deficits in beta power in elderly subjects performing an attentional task with spatial differentiation between visual stimuli. We found that in older adults a lower level of beta activity correlated with decreased behavioral performance. As compared to young subjects, older adults expressed decreased activation in beta band during an attentional task, which dis

Acute visual neglect and extinction: distinct functional state of the visuospatial attention system.

The neural mechanisms underlying spatial neglect are still disputed. Abnormal left parietal hyperactivation is proposed to lead to the rightward attentional bias, a clinical hallmark of neglect. Extinction, another deficit of visuospatial attention, is regarded as either a 'mild' form of neglect or a distinct syndrome. Although both neglect and extinction are typical syndromes of acute right hemispheric stroke, all imaging studies investigating these syndromes were conducted at least several weeks after stroke onset, in a phase when brain reorganization has already progressed. The present stud

Higher or lower? The functional anatomy of perceived allocentric social hierarchies.

The perception and judgement of social hierarchies forms an integral part of social cognition. Hierarchical judgements can be either self-referential or allocentric (pertaining to two or more external agents). In psychiatric conditions such as dissocial personality disorder and schizophrenia, the impact of hierarchies may be problematic. We sought to elucidate the brain regions involved in judging allocentric social hierarchies. Twenty-two healthy male subjects underwent three fMRI scans. During scanning, subjects answered questions concerning visually-presented target pairs of human individua
