Cysts and sinuses of the face and neck should always bring to mind the possibility of causative underlying dental disease. This should be investigated by history, physical examination and appropriate roentgenograms of the teeth. Abscesses of the teeth are the most common dental causes for the suspicious facial mass or sinus tract. Appropriate management includes extraction or root canal therapy of the diseases tooth. Any residual facial scar can later be excised and reconstructed as appropriate.

Periodontal diseases, chronic inflammatory conditions affecting oral health, are primarily driven by microbial plaque biofilm and the body's inflammatory response, leading to tissue damage and potential tooth loss. These diseases have significant physical, psychological, social, and economic impacts, necessitating effective management strategies that include early diagnosis, comprehensive treatment, and innovative therapeutic approaches. Recent advancements in biomanufacturing have facilitated the development of natural bioactive compounds, such as polyphenols, terpenoids, alkaloids, saponins,

Mitochondrial dynamics encompass mitochondrial fusion, fission, and movement. Mitochondrial fission and fusion are seemingly ubiquitous, whereas mitochondrial movement is especially important for organelle transport through neuronal axons. Here, we review the roles of different mitochondrial dynamic processes in mitochondrial quantity and quality control, emphasizing their impact on the neurological system in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2A, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Friedrich's ataxia, dominant optic atrophy, and Alzheimer's, Huntington's, and Parkinson's diseases. In addition to mec

Since its first availability in 2009, the next-generation sequencing (NGS) has been proved to be a powerful tool in identifying disease-associated variants in many neurological diseases, such as spinocerebellar ataxias, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, hereditary spastic paraplegia, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Whole exome sequencing and whole genome sequencing are efficient for identifying variants in novel or unexpected genes responsible for inherited diseases, whereas targeted sequencing is useful in detecting variants in previously known disease-associated genes. The trove of genetic dat

BACKGROUND: The great challenge in clinical periodontology is assigning a prognosis to a periodontally affected patient. Many different factors can affect the long-term maintenance of periodontally compromised teeth. The main questions usually considered by the periodontist are: 1) Will a tooth lose more bone in the future? 2) Will the tooth itself be lost in the future? The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the value of some clinical, genetic, and radiographic variables in predicting tooth loss in periodontal patients (aged 40 to 60 years) treated and maintained for 10 years

Lysosomal storage diseases (LSDs) are a heterogeneous group of rare inherited metabolic diseases that are frequently triggered by the accumulation of lipids inside organelles of the endosomal-autophagic-lysosomal system (EALS). There is now a growing realization that disrupted lysosomal homeostasis (i.e., lysosomal cacostasis) also contributes to more common neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson disease (PD). Lipid deposition within the EALS may also participate in the pathogenesis of some additional neurodegenerative diseases of the motor system. Here, I will highlight the lipid abnor

PURPOSE: To investigate the associations between pulp stone occurrence and age, gender, dental arch, and tooth types in the North China population using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).
METHODS AND MATERIALS: CBCT images were selected based on inclusion criteria: complete permanent dentition (28 intact teeth) and absence of systemic diseases. A total of 335 patients aged 20-40 years were included. Prevalence of pulp stones was compared across age, gender, dental arch, and tooth type. Associations with demographic and tooth-related variables were examined using generalised estimating equa

BACKGROUND: Some studies have described a relationship between hearing loss and the number of teeth. However, a connection between treatment for tooth loss and hearing improvement remains uncertain. This study aimed to evaluate the association between hearing loss and the number of natural teeth, as well as the association between hearing improvement and dental implants.
METHODS: Relevant subjects were retrieved from participants in the 8th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted between 2020 and 2021. Individuals with available information on demographic factors, und

Additional teeth to the normal dentition are called supernumerary teeth; they can be found in higher rates in permanent than in deciduous dentition, in both sexes, associated or not with other diseases or syndromes. The aim of this article is to report three rare cases of unilateral supplemental lateral incisors, in Romanian child and adult patients, and to evaluate the treatment options in each case, considering particularities such as age, physiognomy, associated issues and occlusion. The differential diagnosis between a supernumerary lateral incisor in formation and a rudimentary is sometim

Dominant intermediate Charcot-Marie-Tooth neuropathy type B is caused by mutations in dynamin 2. We studied the clinical, haematological, electrophysiological and sural nerve biopsy findings in 34 patients belonging to six unrelated dominant intermediate Charcot-Marie-Tooth neuropathy type B families in whom a dynamin 2 mutation had been identified: Gly358Arg (Spain); Asp551_Glu553del; Lys550fs (North America); Lys558del (Belgium); Lys558Glu (Australia, the Netherlands) and Thr855_Ile856del (Belgium). The Gly358Arg and Thr855_Ile856del mutations were novel, and in contrast to the other Charcot

Mucormycosis is a rare, fulminant, rapidly spreading fungal infection, which usually affects patient with underlying immune deficiency. If not managed promptly, the disease is characterized by progressive necrosis and is often fatal. A review of English literature shows that only fourteen cases of mucormycosis have been reported after tooth extraction. This paper highlights two cases of mucormycosis subsequent to tooth extraction in healthy adult patients. This first patient presented with an oroantral fistula and extensive maxillary necrosis. Whereas the second case was localized and presente

Mitochondria are very versatile organelles in continuous fusion and fission processes in response to various cellular signals. Mitochondrial dynamics, including mitochondrial fission/fusion, movements and turnover, are essential for the mitochondrial network quality control. Alterations in mitochondrial dynamics can cause neuropathies such as Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease in which mitochondrial fusion and transport are impaired, or dominant optic atrophy which is caused by a reduced mitochondrial fusion. On the other hand, mitochondrial dysfunction in primary mitochondrial diseases promotes reac

Mineralization of bone and tooth extracellular matrix (ECM) is a physiologic process, while soft tissue mineralization, also known as ectopic mineralization (calcification), is a pathologic condition. Vascular calcification is common in aging and also in a number of genetic and metabolic disorders. The calcific deposits in arteries complicate the prognosis and increase the morbidity in diseases such as atherosclerosis, diabetes and chronic kidney disease (CKD). To completely understand the pathophysiology of these lifethreatening diseases, it is critical to elucidate the molecular mechanisms u

Many neuromuscular disorders involve the heart, occasionally with overt clinical disease. Muscular dystrophies (dystrophinopathies, limb girdle muscular dystrophy, Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy, Steinert's myotonic dystrophy), congenital myopathies, inflammatory myopathies and metabolic diseases (glycogenosis, periodic paralysis, mitochondrial diseases) may produce dilated or hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and heart rhythm or conduction disturbances. Furthermore the heart is commonly involved in some hereditary and degenerative diseases (Friedreich's ataxia and Kugelberg-Welander syndrome) an

A case is reported in which a patient with Charcot-Marie-Tooth-Hoffmann disease (HMSN I) complained about bilateral ankle pain, stiffness and swelling. Radiologically multiple loose bodies in both ankle joints were detectable. The etiology of loose bodies or secondary chondromatosis is still unclear. Different reasons are discussed. Regarding the case reported on here we discuss possible etiological connections and pathophysiological pathways that may explain influence of Charcot-Marie-Tooth-Hoffmann disease (hereditary motor sensory neuropathy I) on the development of loose bodies at both ank

The mammalian adult dentition is a non-renewable resource. Tooth attrition and disease must be accommodated by individuals using behavioral, physiological, and/or musculoskeletal shifts to minimize impact on masticatory performance. From a biomechanical perspective, the musculoskeletal system becomes less efficient at producing bite force for a given amount of muscle input force over an individual's life, because tooth-food contact area increases as cusps wear. In this study we ask the question: does mandibular biomechanical performance show evidence of compensation with increasing tooth wear?
