This article presents a case of and reviews the literature involving the extraoral approach for surgical removal of an ectopic mandibular third molar tooth. Case reports describing extraction of the mandibular third molar using the extraoral approach are very limited. This article describes an unusual case of an impacted, infected, ectopic right mandibular third molar that was positioned at the inferior border and had caused an extraoral draining sinus. Furthermore, the roots were intimately involved with the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) and had perforated the buccal cortex of the mandible. S

The use of immediate post-extraction implants presents several advantages in term of reduction of surgical steps and time required to conclude the therapy. Particularly important is the possibility to minimize the bone loss that otherwise would occur in the physiologic healing of the alveolus. Many authors agree that an infected site is one of the main contraindications to use post-extraction implants. In spite of this, favourable results have been reported also in these conditions. In this study, an immediate post-extraction implant has been placed to substitute the maxillary left second prem

Special care is required for the management of jaw lesions in pediatric population. The following article describes the decompression technique as the least aggressive approach for the management of pediatric mandibular odontogenic keratocyst. A custom-made acrylic splint was fabricated around teeth, and it was attached to a piece of Foley's catheter to be used as a decompression port. Subsequent radiographs revealed a decrease in the size of radiolucency, bone formation, and eruption of permanent premolars during a time period of 1 year only. This technique prevents damage to permanent tooth

We report an unusual case of a young Quarter Horse with a large dental fracture fragment displaced into the maxillary sinus, leaving an oroantral communication that caused food impaction and metaplastic calcification in the sinus and facial deformation with cutaneous fistulation. Oral extraction of a remaining tooth fragment from its alveolus was succeeded by a maxillary sinusotomy for removal of the abnormal sinus contents. Since the oroantral fistula did not heal spontaneously following the placement of a silicone dental prosthesis, minimally invasive transbuccal and transnasal endoscopic ap

Mesiodens being the most common type of supernumerary tooth, usually results in malocclusion, poor aesthetics and cyst formation if it is not corrected. The management protocol involves surgical removal. The situation can be complicated in young permanent dentition where there are a lot of chances of damage to the permanent dentition during surgical removal of impacted teeth. This article reports a case of impacted mesiodens which was diagnosed during management of complicated crown fracture. The case was followed up to 3years which showed a good bone formation. The article highlights the need

Trauma to the anterior teeth is relatively common in young children and teenagers. Traumatized anterior teeth require quick functional and aesthetic repair, and poses a challenge to the dental practitioner owing to the lack of co-operation ceded and the longer time invested. Reattachment of tooth fragment should be the first choice to restoring teeth when a usable fragment is available, since it gives a psychological and aesthetic advantage over the conventional technique. With the vast improvement in adhesive technology, reattachment is definitely a predictable treatment option for very young

Glass ionomer cements are currently used in endodontic therapy for sealing root canals (orthogradely and retrogradely), for sealing and restoring the pulp chamber, for repairing perforations and root resorption defects, and, rarely, for treating vertically fractured teeth. The successful use of these cements is the result of their particular characteristics: a chemical bond to dentin, which enhances the seal of the root canal and the reinforcement of the tooth; a good biocompatibility in the periradicular area and a fluoride release without loss of strength of the material. The fluoride releas

Twelve patients were followed for 5 years after treatment with a 12-unit cantilever fixed partial denture on the mandibular canines opposed by a complete maxillary denture. Two fixed dentures had to be removed, one because of an abutment tooth root-fracture and one because of rapid marginal bone loss in a terminal stage of leukemia. Caries and periodontal lesions were rare, but other complications, principally related to endodontics, occurred. All complications were amenable to standard treatment procedures. Extensive mandibular cantilever fixed partial dentures may be used in the rehabilitati

BACKGROUND/AIM: Studies on large cross-arch bridges in patients with severe periodontitis show that such bridges can stabilize the periodontal condition. However, it is not known if these bridges will reduce long-term tooth loss and what factors are important for their long-term survival. The aim of the study was to study all patients with Stages III/IV periodontitis who received cross-arch bridges for up 35 years in a private practice.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: All patients referred for periodontal treatment from 1986 who received cross-arch bridges with observation period of minimum 7 years we

BACKGROUND: Advanced dental disease with associated osteomyelitis is commonly encountered in New World camelids (NWC). In the past, the treatment of choice consisted of extraoral techniques, with complications occurring in up to 70% of cases. With advances in the treatment of dental disease in other species, oral extraction may offer a less invasive alternative, possibly associated with fewer complications. This report describes the diagnosis, treatment and long-term outcome of NWC with dental disease.
METHODS: This was a retrospective study of NWC with advanced dental disease undergoing oral

BACKGROUND The extraction of impacted supernumerary teeth requires precision and accuracy to mitigate iatrogenic damage to crucial anatomical structures during dental surgical procedures, thereby enhancing postoperative healing outcomes. Dynamic navigation systems (DNS) have been applied in dentistry in maxillofacial fractures, orthognathic surgery, root canal treatment, and endodontic surgery. CASE REPORT A 22-year-old female patient visited our department to assess and manage unerupted third molars. An initial cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan was obtained. STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Ceramic single crowns fabricated from newer materials, especially zirconia, have shown relatively high survival rates. However, early reversible complications may increase the risk of an irreversible failure later.
PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the early complications and short-term failures of zirconia single crowns and partial fixed dental prostheses (FDPs) made by predoctoral dental students.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Data were collected from the patient records. Altogether, 264 zirconia single crowns and 120 FDPs (342 abutments and 190 pontics) were

PURPOSE: The ability to predict how long a particular operation will take is important for maintaining operating room efficiency. The purpose of this study was to determine how accurate oral and maxillofacial surgeons (OMSs) can be in making this determination.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three experienced OMSs predicted their operating times for various operations; these predictions were compared with the actual times. The cases were then grouped into those with accurate predictions and those with overestimated and underestimated times, and the operative reports were reviewed for possible operati

Vertical root fractures (VRFs) often occur in endodontically treated teeth and in patients older than 40 years of age. However, VRFs in teeth without endodontic treatment are relatively uncommon. VRFs are difficult to diagnose as the symptoms are non-specific or often delayed. The most common radiographic findings are thickening of the periodontal ligament, deep, localized, vertical bone loss, and localized periradicular bone loss. The explicit feature for detecting VRFs is direct visualization of a radiolucent fracture line on radiographs. However, the fracture line can be difficult to direct
