Effect of masseter muscle mass on the rate of experimental tooth movement in rats.

BACKGROUND: Previous clinical observational studies have suggested that orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) is related, at least partly, to the mass and/or capabilities of the masticatory muscles. OBJECTIVES: Our study aimed to examine the influence of masticatory muscle mass on the OTM in an animal experimental model in which the masseter muscle was modulated by botulinum neurotoxin type A (BTX) injection. METHODS: Eighteen Wistar rats were equally divided into two groups: BTX injection and control. BTX was injected bilaterally into the masseter muscles. Three days after the injection, the max

Augmentation of Narrow Anterior Alveolar Ridge Using Autogenous Block Onlay Graft in a Pediatric Patient: A Case Report.

Tooth loss due to trauma often triggers residual alveolar resorption to a greater degree in the sagittal direction leading to atrophy. However, in a pediatric patient, if this defect is left untreated, it can cause further atrophy leading to collapse of the arch. In the maxillary anterior area, this is also of esthetic concern. Hence, it is viable to reconstruct the alveolar defects and restore the alveolar anatomy with superior quality of bone while the patient is still in growing phase to avoid any structural and dental malformation, as well as to provide a more novel treatment like dental i

Does the presence of maxillary central incisor edge asymmetry influence the perception of dentofacial esthetics in video analysis?

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the influence of incisal edge asymmetry of the maxillary central incisors on dentofacial esthetics among orthodontists, prosthodontists, and laypersons using video analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Full-face films of a 52-year-old afro-descendant woman displaying various levels of incisal wear in the esthetic zone were captured. An acrylic resin mockup was made of the maxillary anterior region, enabling the reproduction of an attractive smile and restoring tooth wear. Four different levels of incisal asymmetry between the upper central incisors in 0.5 mm increments we

CAD/CAM-based chairside restorative technique with composite resin for full-mouth adhesive rehabilitation of excessively worn dentition.

Since the first introduction of the Cerec system (Sirona) in the early 1980s, the use of computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacture (CAD/CAM) technology has spread widely in modern adhesive dentistry. Thanks to this innovative technology, it has been possible to carry out chairside restorations fully managed by the clinician, with the advantages of lower costs for the patient, more rapid execution of the restorations, and the exclusion of the provisional phase. With further improvements in chairside technologies and materials, specifically in the field of composite resin blocks, it is no

Development of a biologically relevant calcium phosphate substrate for sum frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy.

A novel biologically relevant composite substrate has been prepared consisting of a calcium phosphate (CaP) layer formed by magnetron sputter-coating from a hydroxyapatite (HA) target onto a gold-coated silicon substrate. The CaP layer is intended to mimic tooth and bone surfaces and allows polymers used in oral care to be deposited in a procedure analogous to that used for dental surfaces. The polymer cetyl dimethicone copolyol (CDC) was deposited onto the CaP surface of the substrate by Langmuir Blodgett deposition, and the structure of the adsorbed layer was investigated by the surface spec

Cantilevered restorations using CAD/CAM Cerec chairside technology: a case report.

This paper describes a special case in which Cerec 3 chair-side could successfully replace a congenitally missing lateral incisor using a cantilever approach. The patient was in her mid-thirties and well motivated towards the full ceramic treatment. The waxed-up model along with the software yielded a creative Cerec-produced cantilever bridge across tooth 12 and attached to tooth 13. Surprisingly, the veneer on the canine could support a cantilever (on the lateral incisor) with very good performance to date (over 1 year).
