We present a patient with a corneal ulcer due to Listeria monocytogenes, which has not previously been considered to be a feature of human listeriosis. The ulcer responded to topical and subconjunctival gentamicin and cephaloridine. Subsequent management was complicated by the development of a fibrinous pupillary membrane leading to pupillary block requiring iridotomy and later vitrectomy with trabeculectomy. Listeria monocytogenes may be confused with diphtheroid contaminants seen in corneal ulcer scrapings and is probably underreported as a cause for microbial keratitis.

INTRODUCTION: Glaucoma of the aphakic patient is often difficult to treat. Classical surgical management is limited by poor quality conjunctiva and by the presence of the vitreous gel opposite the fistula. We present a new surgical technique which uses a portion of the trabeculum as a drain placed in the anterior chamber.

At that moment, the examination of the eldest son had not revealed modifications of the visual acuity, eye fundus and intraocular pressure. One recognized complication of trabeculectomy with visually devastating potential is blebitis. We present a case of a 74-year-old woman with a culture and polymerase chain reaction-positive Abiotrophia defectiva bleb-associated endophthalmitis. Abiotrophia defectiva is a rare but possible cause of endophthalmitis secondary to blebitis and should be considered in culture-negative cases. Prompt identification, hence directed eradication, of the causative organism in such visually threatening cases may be facilitated by requesting polymerase chain reaction and 16S ribosomal RNA sequencing.
