The Effect of the Ratio of Butylene Succinate and Dilinoleic Diol in Their Copolyester (PBS-DLS) on the Physicochemical Properties and Biofilm Formation.

Biofilm-forming microorganisms pose a severe threat in the food and medical industries, among others. In this paper, the research materials … and phase transition (DSC) were observed. The higher the content of the DLS segment, the lower the transition temperatures and the smoother the film's surface. These factors resulted in a significant reduction in the amount of biofilm formed on the material's surface and a decrease in the metabolic activity of microorganisms present in the biofilm and SEM micrographs. …

Ultraviolet Absorption Cross-Sections of Ammonia at Elevated Temperatures for Nonintrusive Quantitative Detection in Combustion Environments.

Ammonia (NH3) is regarded as an important nitrogen oxides (NOx) precursor and also as an effective reductant for NOx removal in energy utilization through combustion, and it has recently become an attractive non-carbon alternative fuel. To have a better understanding of thermochemical properties of NH3, accurate in situ detection of NH3 in high temperature environments is desirable. Ultraviolet (UV) absorption spectroscopy is a feasible technique. To achieve quantitative measurements, spectrally resolved UV absorption cross-sections of NH3 in hot gas environments at different temperatures from

Unfolding transitions of Bacillus anthracis protective antigen.

Protective antigen (PA) is an 83kDa protein which, although essential for toxicity of Bacillus anthracis, is harmless and an effective vaccine component. In vivo it undergoes receptor binding, proteolysis, heptamerisation and membrane insertion. Here we probe the response of PA to denaturants, temperature and pH. We present analyses (including barycentric mean) of the unfolding and refolding behavior of PA and reveal the origin of two critical steps in the denaturant unfolding pathway in which the first step is a calcium and pH dependent rearrangement of domain 1. Thermal unfolding fits a sing

Direct measurements of pore fluid density by vibrating tube densimetry.

The densities of pore-confined fluids were measured for the first time by means of vibrating tube densimetry (VTD). A custom-built high-pressure, high-temperature vibrating tube densimeter was used to measure the densities of propane at subcritical and supercritical temperatures (between 35 and 97 °C) and carbon dioxide at supercritical temperatures (between 32 and 50 °C) saturating hydrophobic silica aerogel (0.2 g/cm(3), 90% porosity) synthesized inside Hastelloy U-tubes. Additionally, supercritical isotherms of excess adsorption for CO(2) and the same porous solid were measured gravimetrica

Van der Waals Interactions between Nonpolar Alkyl Chains and Polar ZnO Surfaces in Gas Sensing Dynamics of Aliphatic Carboxylic Acids.

Understanding the adsorption behavior of carboxylic acids on oxide surfaces is important in various chemical processes, including heterogeneous catalysis and chemical sensing. Traditionally, these behaviors have been attributed mainly to interactions between the polar carboxyl group and the polar oxide surface. Here, we demonstrate a vital yet previously underestimated effect of van der Waals interactions between the nonpolar alkyl chains and the polar ZnO surfaces on gas adsorption sensing of aliphatic carboxylic acids. Adsorption behaviors of carboxylic acids with different chain lengths (C3

Spin/valley effects and finite-temperature effects on the Hall conductivity of jacutingaite.

We theoretically investigate the spin-Hall and valley-Hall transport properties of monolayer jacutingaite (Pt2HgSe3) under an off-resonant circularly polarized light field and a perpendicular electric field. Using a low-energy massive Dirac model combined with linear resp Alipourzadeh onse theory, we analyze how spin-orbit coupling, inversion-symmetry breaking, optical driving, and finite temperature jointly influence the Hall conductivities. At zero temperature, the spin-Hall and valley-Hall conductivities exhibit step-like plateau features, reflecting the underlying topological character of

Evolution and adaptation of dengue virus in response to high-temperature passaging in mosquito cells.

The incidence of arboviral diseases like dengue, chikungunya, and yellow fever continues to rise in association with the expanding geographic ranges of their vectors, Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. The distribution of these vectors is believed to be driven in part by climate change and increasing urbanization. Arboviruses navigate a wide range of temperatures as they transition from ectothermic vectors (from 15°C to 35°C) to humans (37°C) and back again, but the role that temperature plays in driving the evolution of arboviruses remains largely unknown. Here, we passaged replicate dengue

Residual formaldehyde contents in fresh white cheese in El Salvador: Seasonal changes associated with temperature.

Detection of residual formaldehyde (FA) in dairy products could be explained by direct addition of this preservative to extend the shelf life of raw material or final product at room temperature. FA is not authorized as a preservative by international standards and its addition to dairy products is prohibited due to its potentially harmful effects on consumers. Although the carcinogenicity of FA by oral exposure has not been proven, it is also known it cause histopathological and cytogenic changes in tissues at first contact, so its toxicity by ingestion should not be underestimated. This rese

Challenges and opportunities of the full phase-out of fossil fuels under the 1.5 °C goal.

The COP28 decision called for transitioning away from fossil fuels, sparking a growing interest in their full phase-out. However, energy system transformation pathways towards a phase-out of fossil fuels, which may reduce the reliance on carbon dioxide removal to meet the 1.5 °C goal, remain unclear. Here, we employ two global energy system models to explore energy system transformations and the challenges and opportunities associated with attaining a full phase-out of fossil fuels. We found that phasing out fossil fuels by 2050 would require accelerating direct and indirect electrification, i

Synthesis of nanocrystalline SnO(x) (x = 1-2) thin film using a chemical bath deposition method with improved deposition time, temperature and pH.

Nanocrystalline SnO(x) (x = 1-2) thin films were prepared on glass substrates by a simple chemical bath deposition method. Triethanolamine was used as complexing agent to decrease time and temperature of deposition and shift the pH of the solution to the noncorrosive region. The films were characterized for composition, surface morphology, structure and optical properties. X-ray diffraction analysis confirms that SnO(x) thin films consist of a polycrystalline structure with an average grain size of 36 nm. Atomic force microscopy studies show a uniform grain distribution without pinholes. The e

Manipulation of localized excitons in CrPS4 by temperature and magnetic field.

Layered van der Waals magnetic semiconductors provide a versatile platform for exploring excitonic phenomena intertwined with spin and lattice degrees of freedom, enabling excitons to act as sensitive probes of magnetic order. CrPS4 is a layered antiferromagnetic semiconductor that hosts rich excitonic features whose microscopic origin and connection to magnetic ordering remain incompletely understood. Here, we investigate the electronic and excitonic properties of bulk CrPS4 using a combination of many-body perturbation theory, dynamical mean-field theory, and photoluminescence-based experime

Temperature-dependent UV photodissociation cross sections and rates of CH.

CH+ is an important reactive molecular ion in the interstellar medium with photodissociation properties that are essential for understanding its formation and destruction in UV-irradiated environments. In this work, high-level MRCI+Q calculations were performed for 18 singlet and triplet states correlating with the six lowest dissociation limits. The resulting potential energy curves, transition dipole moment curves, spin-orbit couplings, and electronic angular momentum couplings were employed to calculate the internal partition functions and the rovibrationally resolved photoabsorption and di

Topological Spin-Texture Transitions in van der Waals Magnets Revealed by X-Ray Fourier Transform Holography.

Nontrivial topological spin-textures, such as skyrmions, merons, bimerons, and skyrmioniums, are envisioned as robust building blocks for future memory and logic devices. Controllable transformations between these states require a quantum-mechanical description of electronic degrees of freedom and atomic-scale insight beyond existing phenomenological models. Here, we report an atomic-scale investigation of topological phase transitions and their protection in the two-dimensional van der Waals ferromagnet Fe3GeTe2 (FGT) using a combined experimental-theoretical approach. Molecular simulation of capillary phase transitions in flexible porous materials.

We used flat-histogram sampling Monte Carlo to study capillary phase transitions in deformable adsorbent materials. Specifically, we considered a pure adsorbate fluid below its bulk critical temperature within a slit pore of variable pore width. The instantaneous pore width is dictated by a number of factors, such as adsorbate loading, reservoir pressure, fluid-wall interaction, and bare adsorbent properties. In the slit pores studied here, the bare adsorbent free energy was assumed to be biparabolic, consisting of two preferential pore configurations, namely, the narrow pore and the large por

Crystal Structure Evolution and Notable Thermal Expansion in Hybrid Perovskites Formamidinium Tin Iodide and Formamidinium Lead Bromide.

The temperature-dependent structure evolution of the hybrid halide perovskite compounds, formamidinium tin iodide (FASnI3, FA+ = CH[NH2]2+) and formamidinium lead bromide (FAPbBr3), has been monitored using high-resolution synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction between 300 and 100 K. The data are consistent with a transition from cubic Pm3m (No. 221) to tetragonal P4/mbm (No. 127) for both materials upon cooling; this occurs for FAPbBr3 between 275 and 250 K, and for FASnI3 between 250 and 225 K. Upon further cooling, between 150 and 125 K, both materials undergo a transition to an orthorhombic

Exploring the pressure and spin-orbit coupling effects in Pt3Sn2S2: a kagome-type analog of Co3Sn2S2.

We present a detailed theoretical study of Pt3Sn2S2, a layered kagome-type material obtained by replacing Co with Pt in Co3Sn2S2, a system extensively studied in Nat. Commun. (2020, 11, 3985) and Rev. Phys. (2022, 8, 100072), though the Pt-analog remains largely unexplored. Thermodynamic stability was confirmed via formation energy calculations, while mechanical stability was evaluated using the Voigt-Reuss-Hill (VRH) approximation and elastic stability conditions. Dynamical and thermal stability were validated through phonon dispersion and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, with Pugh's

Local and global heat capacities of confined Bose gases: The impact of quantum migration.

The recently proposed macroscopic quantum phenomenon, Temperature-Induced Quantum Migration (TIQM), causes local heating and cooling and significantly affects the local heat capacity of a noninteracting confined Maxwell-Boltzmann gas. TIQM guarantees the non-negativity of local heat capacity at low temperatures, results in a substantial local heat-capacity overshoot, and provides a physical basis for global heat-capacity maxima and thermal confinement energy. We extend this framework here to Bose gases in three different rectangular domains, effectively providing three-dimensional (3D)/two-dim

Quasi-static and dynamic response, and texture evolution of two overaged Al 7056 alloy plates in T761 and T721 tempers: Experiments and modeling.

The thermo-mechanical behavior and texture evolution of two overaged Al 7056 alloy plates, in T761 and T721 tempers, are measured over a wide range of strain rates (10‒4 - 3 × 103 s‒1) and temperatures (22-300 °C) under uniaxial tension and compression along the thickness direction, i.e. normal to the plate surface. A detailed study of the initial microstructure reveals an increase in precipitate size and decrease in density of precipitates, as the alloy is aged from the T761 to T721 temper; which in turn affects the flow stress and strain hardening behavior. Differences in flow strength and s
