Photoswitchable organic magnetic materials.

Controlling magnetism with molecular spin state using external stimuli has a wide range of applications in spintronics, information technology, data storage, and quantum computations. Due to their weak spin-orbit coupling and low hyperfine interactions, all organic bistable spin systems are advantageous over transition metal-based spin systems. However, controlling the molecular spin state using light as an external stimulus in all organic systems is difficult. Many of these difficulties and challenges have been discussed in this review. Although there have been a few recent reports, light-dri

Molecular dynamics studies of trinucleotide repeat DNA involved in neurodegenerative disorders.

Expansion of trinucleotide repeat DNA of the classes CAG-CTG, CGG-CCG and GAA-TTC are found to be associated with several neurodegenerative disorders. Different mechanisms have been attributed to the expansion of triplets, mainly involving the formation of alternate secondary structures by such repeats. This paper reports the molecular dynamics simulation of triplet repeat DNA sequences to study the basic structural features of DNA that are responsible for the formation of structures such as hairpins and slip-strand DNA leading to expansion. All the triplet repeat sequences studied were found …

Identification of anti-TIM-3 based checkpoint inhibitor combinations with activity in immunotherapy refractory melanoma models.

BACKGROUND: A significant percentage of melanomas are refractory to immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) monotherapies and combinations. As there are currently no effective second-line therapies available for ICI-resistant patients, we sought to identify novel checkpoint inhibitor combinations for future clinical evaluation. METHODS: We used responding and resistant SM1, SW1 and B16-10 melanoma models to explore the mechanism of action of anti-programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1)+lymphocyte activation gene (LAG-3), anti-PD-1+cytotoxic lymphocyte associated protein 4 (CTLA-4), the anti-PD-1+LAG

Dual AV nodal non-reentrant tachycardia-induced cardiomyopathy.

Dual atrioventricular (AV) nodal non-reentrant tachycardia (DAVNNT) is rare phenomenon where dual AV nodal physiology allows a single P wave to conduct down both the slow and fast AV node extensions resulting in two ventricular beats. We present a case of DAVNNT manifest as incessant ventricular triplets resulting in tachycardia-inducted cardiomyopathy. We discuss the underlying electrophysiology for this rare phenomenon, how to diagnose this condition and the appropriate treatment for this syndrome.

[Fetus compressus and fetus papyraceous. Clinical differences (report of three cases)].

The items papyraceus fetus and fetus compressus are used like synonymous. The low incidence and the lack of reporting of these cases leads to confusion. Clinical evidence shows significant differences between them and sustain a proper diagnosis. We report 3 cases of patients with multiple pregnancy (2 twins and 1 triplets) observed in the death of one of the products of each patient, obtaining 2 fetus compressus and 1 fetus papyraceous, respectively.

[A triple pregnancy following heterologous insemination and ovarian stimulation with a favorable outcome].

The larger usage of inducing ovulation drugs in the last decade brought to more frequent multiple pregnancies. The authors describe triplet pregnancy after hetero-insemination and ovaries stimulation which ended the birth (by Cesarean section) of three alive and healthy babies. The triplet pregnancy is high-risky. More often hypertension anaemia and postpartum haemorrhage are met. The most important complication anyway is the preterm delivery which shows as a result unfavourable perinatal outcome. The question about the effectiveness of the prophylactic cerclage and the prophylactic tocolysis

Phototransformation of benzodiazepines in water mediated by dissolved black carbon: Mechanisms and the structure-reactivity relationship.

Dissolved black carbon (DBC) within aquatic dissolved organic matters demonstrates potent photochemical activity, yet its effects on emerging contaminant transformation and structure-reactivity relationships remain inadequately characterized. In this study, benzodiazepines were employed as model emerging contaminants to investigate the photoactivity, mediation effect, and structural-activity relationships of five DBC samples and four well-studied dissolved humic substances (DHSs) under simulated sunlight irradiation. DBC efficiently generated superoxide anions (O2·-), singlet oxygen (1O2), and

The probability of multiple births when multiple gestational sacs or viable embryos are diagnosed at first trimester ultrasound.

The live birth outcome when multiple gestational sacs were diagnosed at first trimester ultrasound was reviewed in 227 twin, 43 triplet and five quadruplet pregnancies. When two gestational sacs were present, the probability of delivering twins was 63% for maternal age less than 30 and 52% for maternal age greater than or equal to 30. With three gestational sacs, the probability of a triplet birth was 45% for maternal age less than 30 and 18% for maternal age greater than or equal to 30. When two viable embryos were present, the probability of a twin birth was 90% for maternal age less than 30

First preimplantation genetic testing case for monogenic disease in Latvia.

Huntington's disease (HD) is fatal neurodegenerative disease caused by a (CAG) triplet repeat expansion in the Huntingtin (HTT) gene. Inheritance pattern of the disease is autosomal dominant and onset depending on triplet repeat count. Transgenerational HD transmission can be avoided by preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD). Here, we report the first preimplantation genetic testing case for monogenic disease, in Latvia. The result of our work led to the birth of healthy child with normal HTT alleles in his genome. We describe a PGD strategy and testing algorithm that can be applied to any co

Multifetal Pregnancy Reduction.

Multiple gestations of triplets or more have a significant increase in perinatal morbidity and mortality compared with twins. On average, triplet gestations deliver at approximately 33.5 weeks. Approximately 25% deliver at <32 weeks and 10% deliver <28 weeks. Maternal complications are also significantly increased. Multifetal pregnancy reduction involves the ultrasonically guided injection of KCl into the fetal thorax to induce asystole. It is performed to reduce the potential for early preterm delivery associated with higher-order multiple gestations. Multifetal pregnancy reduction to twins i…

A case of spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy with high-stage and high-Gleason Score prostate cancer responded to maximal androgen blockade therapy.

Spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy is a hereditary motor neuron disease caused by the expansion of CAG triplets in the androgen receptor. Because the length of CAG repeat is inversely related with androgen receptor function, patients with a longer CAG repeat are expected to have a lower incidence of prostate cancer. Here, we report an extremely rare case of high-stage prostate cancer in a patient with spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy, which responded to maximal androgen blockade therapy.

Intergenerational instability and marked anticipation in SCA-17.

The authors describe an Italian family with autosomal dominant ataxia, dementia, psychiatric and extrapyramidal features, epilepsy, mild sensorimotor axonal neuropathy, and MRI findings of cerebral and cerebellar atrophy. A child had a distinctive presentation with onset at 3 years, growth retardation, fast progression, and early death. Molecular analysis demonstrated an expanded CAG/CAA repeat in the TBP gene (SCA-17). The repeat size was 66 triplets in the child and 53 in all the other patients.

Accessibility of Protein-Bound Chlorophylls Probed by Dynamic Electron Polarization.

The possibility to probe the accessibility of sites of proteins represents an important point to explore their interactions with specific substrates in solution. The dynamic electron polarization of nitroxide radicals induced by excited triplet states of organic molecules is a phenomenon that is known to occur in aqueous solutions. The interaction within the radical-triplet pair causes a net emissive dynamic electron polarization of the nitroxide radical, that can be detected by means of time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance (TR-EPR) spectroscopy. We have exploited this effect to prove

Preimplantation diagnosis for fragile X syndrome based on the detection of the non-expanded paternal and maternal CGG.

Fragile X syndrome is the most common monogenic cause of mental retardation in boys. It is always characterized clinically by moderate mental retardation and often by a long face with large everted ears and macro-orchidism. The causal mutation is an expansion of a CGG triplet repeat in a 5' exon of the FMR-1 gene in Xq27.3. We report here for the first time a method for preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) for fragile X syndrome based on the amplification of the CGG triplet in the normal allele. Our candidate-patient population, as well as two clinical preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD

Host-controlled switching between TADF and RTP in acridone-carboline donor-acceptor dyads.

Purely organic, metal-free emitters that combine thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) and room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) provide an attractive route to triplet harvesting without heavy-metal complexes. Here, we report two acridone-carboline donor-acceptor emitters, Acr-Me-Cb and Acr-Anisyl-Cb, that exhibit bluish-green emission centered at 422 nm and high photoluminescence quantum yields of up to 85% in toluene. A moderate singlet-triplet energy gap (ΔEST ≈ 0.3 eV) enables competing reverse intersystem crossing and triplet stabilization pathways, allowing delayed fluorescenc

Effect of Hydrogen Bonding on Ultrafast Intersystem Crossing in 7-Diethylaminothiocoumarin.

Thiocarbonyls exhibit unique photophysical properties, characterized by rapid intersystem crossing (ISC) due to favorable singlet-triplet energetics and enhanced spin-orbit coupling. However, the role of hydrogen bonding in modulating the ISC remains underexplored. This study investigates the effect of solvent-solute hydrogen bonding on the ISC dynamics of 7-(diethylamino)-4-methyl-2-sulfanylidene-2H-chromen-2-one (thiocoumarin 1, TC1) using steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopy, complemented by theoretical calculations. Experimental data reveal that in methanol, hydrogen bonding leads t

Theoretical study on the origin of the dual phosphorescence emission from organic aggregates at room temperature.

Purely organic materials with dual room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) phenomenon were reported recently, but the underlying mechanism was still ambiguous. Herein, we revealed the source of dual RTP emission, taking CzDPS crystal as prototype, by using hybrid quantum mechanics and molecular mechanics (QM/MM) coupled with the thermal vibration correlation function rate theory. Theoretical calculations verified that the emission lifetimes are prolonged from 70 ms in the higher triplet state T2 to 216 ms in the lowest triplet state T1, which is well consistent with the increase of RTP lifetime

Exceptionally efficient deep blue anthracene-based luminogens: design, synthesis, photophysical, and electroluminescent mechanisms.

Achieving high-efficiency deep blue emitter with CIEy < 0.06 (CIE, Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage) and external quantum efficiency (EQE) >10% has been a long-standing challenge for traditional fluorescent materials in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Here, we report the rational design and synthesis of two new deep blue luminogens: 4-(10-(4'-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)-2,5-dimethyl-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4-yl)anthracen-9-yl)benzonitrile (2M-ph-pCzAnBzt) and 4-(10-(4-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)-2,5-dimethylphenyl)anthracen-9-yl)benzonitrile (2M-pCzAnBzt). In particular, 2M-ph-pCzAnBzt produces saturated

Dentatorubral and pallidoluysian atrophy (DRPLA). Clinical and neuropathological findings in genetically confirmed North American and European pedigrees.

Dentatorubral and pallidoluysian atrophy (DRPLA) is an autosomal dominant disorder that clinically overlaps with Huntington's disease (HD) and manifests combinations of chorea, myoclonus, seizures, ataxia, and dementia. DRPLA is caused by a CAG triplet repeat (CTG-B37) expansion coding for polyglutamine on chromosome 12 and exhibits the genetic phenomenon of anticipation. This neurodegenerative disease has only rarely been reported in non-Japanese pedigrees, and there are only a few neuropathological studies in genetically confirmed patients. We report 10 cases of DRPLA from two North American
