Tuberculosis (TB) prevalence is increasing in developed nations and continuing to cause significant mortality in low- and middle-income countries. As a result of the uptick in cases, there also exists an increased prevalence of extrapulmonary TB. TB is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tb). When M. tb disseminates to the vertebral column, it is called Pott's disease or spinal TB. The frequency, symptoms, and severity of the disease range by the location of the spine and the region of the affected vertebrae. While the current literature shows that timely diagnosis is crucial to reduce th

Although infectious myelopathies are rare, timely and accurate diagnosis is essential to improving outcome. There are a number of organisms that may cause infectious myelopathies, including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I), herpesviruses, enteroviruses, Treponema pallidum, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, fungi, and parasites. Vacuolar myelopathy, the most common form of spinal cord disease in HIV-infected individuals, is underrecognized clinically. The failure to diagnose this condition is generally a consequence of the attribution of the lower ex

PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare osteotomized debridement (OD) with traditional curetted debridement (CD) in treating thoracolumbar tuberculosis (TB).
METHODS: A total of 188 patients were diagnosed with active thoracolumbar TB and underwent one-stage posterior surgery at our institution. Of the 188 patients, 85 patients were treated with OD, and 103 patients were treated with traditional CD. The patient information, laboratory results, imaging findings, and clinical effectiveness were, respectively, compared between the two groups.
RESULTS: Group OD consumed less operation time and bloo

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical outcomes of primary anterior radical debridement, bone autograft, and sacral rod fixation for the treatment of tuberculosis of the lumbosacral segment.
METHODS: From March 2004 to November 2008,11 patients with tuberculosis of the lumbosacral segments received antituberculosis medications for 2 to 3 weeks before anterior radical debridement, autologous iliac bone grafting, and internal sacral rod fixation. Among the patients, 5 patients were male and 6 patients were female, with an average age of (44.45 +/- 8.50) years (ranged from 29 to 56 years). The aver

In 1973, analysis of the mummified remains of a young boy dated to 700AD and from the Late Nasca period (Peru) identified (i) chronic Pott's disease, leading to loss of lower body mobility, and (ii) acute miliary tuberculosis, affecting most organs and the immediate cause of death (Allison et al., 1973). This report was the first to establish, beyond dispute, the presence of tuberculosis in the Americas before the arrival of Europeans. Here, we revisit the 'Nasca Boy' from a bioarchaeology of care perspective. Contextualising the original study's results within what is known of contemporary li

The outcomes of treatment in 280 children with tuberculosis of bones and joints are analyzed. A general chemotherapy scheme for tuberculosis makes treatment regimens recommend for use in different forms of osteoarticular tuberculosis, which have been differentiated by the site and rate of an osseous and intrathoracic process and by the magnitude of their complications. The regimens differed in dosages, routes, and duration of administration of antituberculous drugs.

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis of bone is rare (10 to 20 per cent of all skeletal tuberculosis). The multifocal form is exceptional even in endemic countries of tuberculosis. It constitutes less than 5 per cent of all osseous tuberculosis.
CASE REPORT: O.H. 34 year-old, Moroccan woman of black race not vaccinated against tuberculosis, with a contagion, complained for a year from scapular pain and weight loss. She noticed that two masses had appeared six months ago. The patient was feverish (38 degrees). The physical exam showed a non inflammatory mass 10 cm wide located in front of the left sacro
