Physicians found an interactive tool displaying structured evidence summaries for multiple comparisons understandable and useful: a qualitative user testing study.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate and improve "Making Alternative Treatment Choices Intuitive and Trustworthy" (MATCH-IT)-a digital, interactive decision support tool displaying structured evidence summaries for multiple comparisons-to help physicians interpret and apply evidence from network meta-analysis (NMA) for their clinical decision-making. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: We conducted a qualitative user testing study, applying principles from user-centered design in an iterative development process. We recruited a convenience sample of practicing physicians in Norway, Belgium, and Canada, and asked th

Detecting cognitive hacking in visual inspection with physiological measurements.

Cyber threats are targeting vulnerabilities of human workers performing tasks in manufacturing processes, including visual inspection to bias their decision-making, thereby sabotaging product quality. This article examines the use of priming as a form of "cognitive hacking" to adversely affect quality inspection decisions in manufacturing, and investigates physiological measurements as means to detect such intrusion. In a within-subject design experiment, twenty participants inspected surface roughness of a manufactured component with and without exposure to priming on the display of an inspec

Design and Implementation of a Walking Stick Aid for Visually Challenged People.

Visually challenged people (VCPs) face many difficulties in their routine life. Usually, in many cases, they need to depend upon others, which makes them unconfident in an unfamiliar environment. Thus, in this paper, we present an aid that helps in detecting obstacles and water puddles in their way. This system comprises a walking stick and Android-based applications (APPs). The walking stick is embedded with Raspberry Pi and programmable interface controller (PIC) as a control kernel, sensors, a global position system (GPS) module, and alert-providing components. Sensors help to detect obstac

ANCO-GeneDB: annotations and comprehensive analysis of candidate genes for alcohol, nicotine, cocaine and opioid dependence.

Studies have shown that genetic factors play an important role in the risk to substance addiction and abuse. So far, various genetic and genomic studies have reported the related evidence. These rich, but highly heterogeneous, data provide us an unprecedented opportunity to systematically collect, curate and assess the genetic and genomic signals from published studies and to perform a comprehensive analysis of their features, functional roles and druggability. Such genetic data resources have been made available for other disease or phenotypes but not for major substance dependence yet. Here,

Evaluation of Procedural Simulation as a Training and Assessment Tool in General Surgery-Simulating a Laparoscopic Appendectomy.

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic appendectomy is a commonly performed surgical procedure, but few training models have been described for it. We examined a virtual reality module for practising a laparoscopic appendectomy. METHODS: A prospective cohort study with the following 3 groups of surgeons (n = 45): novices (0 procedures), intermediates (10-50 procedures), and experienced (>100 procedures). After being introduced to the simulator and 1 familiarization attempt on the procedural module, the participants practiced the module 20 times. Movements, task time, and procedure-specific parameters were

Surface electromyographic control of a novel phonemic interface for speech synthesis.

Many individuals with minimal movement capabilities use AAC to communicate. These individuals require both an interface with which to construct a message (e.g., a grid of letters) and an input modality with which to select targets. This study evaluated the interaction of two such systems: (a) an input modality using surface electromyography (sEMG) of spared facial musculature, and (b) an onscreen interface from which users select phonemic targets. These systems were evaluated in two experiments: (a) participants without motor impairments used the systems during a series of eight training sessi

The Human Brainnetome Atlas: A New Brain Atlas Based on Connectional Architecture.

The human brain atlases that allow correlating brain anatomy with psychological and cognitive functions are in transition from ex vivo histology-based printed atlases to digital brain maps providing multimodal in vivo information. Many current human brain atlases cover only specific structures, lack fine-grained parcellations, and fail to provide functionally important connectivity information. Using noninvasive multimodal neuroimaging techniques, we designed a connectivity-based parcellation framework that identifies the subdivisions of the entire human brain, revealing the in vivo connectivi

Development and user validation of driving tasks for a power wheelchair simulator.

UNLABELLED: Mobility is important for participation in daily activities and a power wheelchair (PW) can improve quality of life of individuals with mobility impairments. A virtual reality simulator may be helpful in complementing PW skills training, which is generally seen as insufficient by both clinicians and PW users. To this end, specific, ecologically valid activities, such as entering an elevator and navigating through a shopping mall crowd, have been added to the McGill wheelchair (miWe) simulator through a user-centred approach. PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to validate the

A mixed-reality part-task trainer for subclavian venous access.

INTRODUCTION: Mixed-reality (MR) procedural simulators combine virtual and physical components and visualization software that can be used for debriefing and offer an alternative to learn subclavian central venous access (SCVA). We present a SCVA MR simulator, a part-task trainer, which can assist in the training of medical personnel. METHODS: Sixty-five participants were involved in the following: (1) a simulation trial 1; (2) a teaching intervention followed by trial 2 (with the simulator's visualization software); and (3) trial 3, a final simulation assessment. The main test parameters wer

Evaluation of reach and grasp robot-assisted therapy suggests similar functional recovery patterns on proximal and distal arm segments in sub-acute hemiplegia.

This paper provides some additional evidence in support of the hypothesis that robot therapies are clinically beneficial in neurorehabilitation. Although only four subjects were included in the study, the design of the intervention and the measures were done so as to minimize bias. The results are presented as single case studies, and can only be interpreted as such due to the study size. The intensity of intervention was 16 h and the therapy philosophy (based on Carr and Shepherd) was that coordinated movements are preferable to joint based therapies, and that coordinating distal movements (i

The relation between mindfulness and fear of negative evaluation over the course of cognitive behavioral therapy for social anxiety disorder.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the relation between mindfulness and fear of negative evaluation over the course of nonmindfulness based cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for social anxiety disorder (SAD). We expected that higher levels of mindfulness would be associated with a more positive response to treatment. METHOD: This study is a secondary report from a randomized controlled trial in which participants (N = 65) diagnosed with SAD were randomly assigned to receive 8 weeks of 1 of 2 manualized treatments (exposure group therapy, n = 33; or virtual reality exposure therapy, n = 32) eith

Slope of change throughout exposure treatment for flight phobia: the role of autonomic flexibility.

This study tested the hypothesis that flight-phobic patients experience change at different rates even when they are receiving identical treatment. Faster within-session rates of change (WSRC) were expected for patients who required fewer exposure sessions. The study also tested the theoretical role of autonomic flexibility on WSRC. High flexibility should be associated with faster rates of change. Thirty-seven flight-phobic patients were successfully treated with a computer-assisted fear of flying treatment. A significant negative correlation was found between total number of sessions and WSR

RADIANCE: An automated, enterprise-wide solution for archiving and reporting CT radiation dose estimates.

There is growing interest in the ability to monitor, track, and report exposure to radiation from medical imaging. Historically, however, dose information has been stored on an image-based dose sheet, an arrangement that precludes widespread indexing. Although scanner manufacturers are beginning to include dose-related parameters in the Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) headers of imaging studies, there remains a vast repository of retrospective computed tomographic (CT) data with image-based dose sheets. Consequently, it is difficult for imaging centers to monitor their d

Effectiveness of acupressure and acustimulation in minimizing driving simulation adaptation syndrome.

We investigated the efficacy of acupressure and acustimulation in alleviating symptoms of Simulation Adaptation Syndrome (SAS). Twenty-five drivers (mean age = 35.6) reporting a history of driving-related sickness, motion sickness, and/or seasickness were recruited for a within subject, repeated-measures crossover study. Of all participants, 16 reported SAS during a placebo condition. These 16 participants drove the Atari research simulator for 15 minutes on 3 separate days (same time each day), wearing: (a) a placebo device, (b) acupressure beads, and (c) an acu-stimulation device. Every 3 mi

Effects of roll visual motion on online control of arm movement: reaching within a dynamic virtual environment.

Reaching toward a visual target involves the transformation of visual information into appropriate motor commands. Complex movements often occur either while we are moving or when objects in the world move around us, thus changing the spatial relationship between our hand and the space in which we plan to reach. This study investigated whether rotation of a wide field-of-view immersive scene produced by a virtual environment affected online visuomotor control during a double-step reaching task. A total of 20 seated healthy subjects reached for a visual target that remained stationary in space

Vibrotactile stimulators and virtual 3-D audio countermeasures, training and motion sickness symptoms with a simulated graveyard spin illusion.

The vestibular system by itself is incapable of effectively compensating for the graveyard spin illusion. We examined two countermeasures, i.e., efficacy of vibrotactile stimulation around the waist and virtual 3-D audio presented independently and jointly for controlling a simulated graveyard spin. We also examined: a) additional training with these countermeasures to improve "intuitiveness;" b) included non-perturbation trials along with perturbation trials; and c) monitored changes in well-being as measured by a motion sickness scale from pre- to post-test and immediately following each tri

Multifocal visual evoked responses to dichoptic stimulation using virtual reality goggles: Multifocal VER to dichoptic stimulation.

Multifocal visual evoked potentials (mfVEPs) have demonstrated good diagnostic capabilities in glaucoma and optic neuritis. This study aimed at evaluating the possibility of simultaneously recording mfVEP for both eyes with dichoptic stimulation using virtual reality goggles and also to determine the stimulus characteristics that yield maximum amplitude. ten healthy volunteers were recruited and temporally sparse pattern pulse stimuli were presented dichoptically using virtual reality goggles. Experiment 1 involved recording responses to dichoptically presented checkerboard stimuli and also co
