Efficacy and social validity of procedures for improving conversational skills of college students with autism.

Better conversational skills correspond to a higher quality of life for adults diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In this study, we taught vocal-verbal responses discriminated by compound arrangements of concealed conversation partner mands to two college students with ASD. Participants learned to engage in self-questioning about their conversation partner's behavior and to reinforce three concealed mands for termination of an aversive conversation scenario. We assessed generalization to conversation probes with trained confederates and to interactions with untrained conversational

Progressive impairment of constructional abilities: a visuospatial sketchpad deficit?

The case of a patient, PC, with an impairment of constructional abilities due to a progressive degenerative disease is described. Ideomotor apraxia was also present. PC showed difficulties in all tasks requiring a "manipulation" of a visual model or requiring a visual model to address a specific movement or a choice among alternatives. The spatial component of mental imagery was also severely impaired. The conclusion was that the patient presented a deficit of the rehearsal component of the visuospatial sketchpad (VSSP). This produced an impairment of spatial learning, but spatial retrograde m

Training parents to use the natural language paradigm to increase their autistic children's speech.

Parents of four nonverbal and four echolalic autistic children were trained to increase their children's speech by using the Natural Language Paradigm (NLP), a loosely structured procedure conducted in a play environment with a variety of toys. Parents were initially trained to use the NLP in a clinic setting, with subsequent parent-child speech sessions occurring at home. The results indicated that following training, parents increased the frequency with which they required their children to speak (i.e., modeled words and phrases, prompted answers to questions). Correspondingly, all children

A 19-Year-Old Adolescent with Probable Alzheimer's Disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) primarily affects older adults. In this report, we present the case of a 19-year-old male with gradual memory decline for 2 years and World Health Organization-University of California Los Angeles Auditory Verbal Learning Test (WHO-UCLA AVLT) results also showing memory impairment. Positron emission tomography-magnetic resonance imaging with 18F fluorodeoxyglucose revealed atrophy of the bilateral hippocampus and hypometabolism in the bilateral temporal lobe. Examination of the patient's cerebrospinal fluid showed an increased concentration of p-tau181 and a decreased …

Electronic screen media for persons with autism spectrum disorders: results of a survey.

Social and anecdotal reports suggest a predilection for visual media among individuals on the autism spectrum, yet no formal investigation has explored the extent of that use. Using a distributed questionnaire design, parents and caregivers report on time allotted toward media, including observable behaviors and communicative responses. More time was spent engaged with electronic screen media (ESM) than any other leisure activity. Television and movie viewing was more popular than computer usage. Across media platforms, animated programs were more highly preferred. Prevalent verbal and physica

Cognitive deficits in nonretarded adults with fetal alcohol syndrome.

Persons with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) who are not mentally retarded often have difficulty qualifying for special educational and vocational services. In this pilot study, 16 nonretarded young adults with FAS were divided into two groups--one with average to above-average IQ and one with borderline to low-average IQ. Participants in both groups manifested clear deficits on neuropsychological measures sensitive to complex attention, verbal learning, and executive function. The frequency and severity of cognitive impairment demonstrated in both FAS groups were greater than what would have bee…

Neuropsychological assessment in MS: clinical, neurophysiological and neuroradiological relationships.

We assessed cognitive performance and its relationship with clinical and anatomic disease severity in MS with mild to moderate handicap; 34 definite MS and 18 healthy subjects matched for age and education were submitted to a neuropsychological test battery. Both groups were examined for anxiety. MS patients underwent magnetic resonance imaging examination. MS performed worse than controls on all WAIS-P subtests and had learning, short- and long-term verbal memory impairment. Cognitive deficits were not related to abnormal emotional states, but were found to be associated with attentional proc

Behavioral and psychological impact of returning breast density results to Latinas: study protocol for a randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is the most common cancer and the leading cause of cancer mortality among Latinas. As more is learned about the association between mammographic breast density (MBD) and breast cancer risk, a number of U.S. states adopted legislation and now a federal law mandates written notification of MBD along with mammogram results. These notifications vary in content and readability, though, which may limit their effectiveness and create confusion or concern, especially among women with low health literacy or barriers to screening. The purpose of this study is to determine wheth

Transcranial direct current stimulation for learning and memory in Parkinson's disease: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment affecting memory and learning processes is a common non-motor feature of Parkinson's disease (PD) and contributes substantially to functional decline and a reduced quality of life. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has emerged as a potentially beneficial non-invasive neuromodulation technique capable of modulating cortical plasticity and enhancing cognitive and motor performance. However, its specific effects on memory- and learning-related outcomes in PD remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: To systematically review and synthesize the available evidence reg

Paired Associate Learning Tasks and their Contribution to Reading Skills.

Associative learning has been identified as one of several non-linguistic processes involved in reading acquisition. However, it has not been established whether it is an independent process that contributes to reading performance on its own or whether it is a process that is embedded in other linguistic skills (e.g., phonological awareness or phonological memory) and, therefore, contributing to reading performance indirectly. Research has shown that performance on tasks assessing associative learning, e.g., paired-associate learning (PAL) tasks, is lower in children with specific reading diff

When Sex Overcomes Motor Phenotype: New Evidence on Cognitive and Neurobehavioral Symptoms in Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Sex-based differences in cognitive and behavioral symptoms have been previously reported in Parkinson's disease (PD), as well as … r groups in an inhibitory control task (p = 0.03853). Interestingly, RA females performed better on verbal learning than tremor-dominant (TD) males (p = 0.00911), suggesting that sex effects overcome motor phenotype in this cognitive function. No significant interactions were found between sex and lateralization at onset concerning cognitive variables. However, p …

Neurophysiological Verbal Working Memory Patterns in Children: Searching for a Benchmark of Modality Differences in Audio/Video Stimuli Processing.

Exploration of specific brain areas involved in verbal working memory (VWM) is a powerful but not widely used tool for the study of different sensory modalities, especially in children. In this study, for the first time, we used electroencephalography (EEG) to investigate neurophysiological similarities and differences in response to the same verbal stimuli, expressed in the auditory and visual modality during the n-back task with varying memory load in children. Since VWM plays an important role in learning ability, we wanted to investigate whether children elaborated the verbal input from au

Neuropsychological symptom dimensions in bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: While neurocognitive (NC) impairments have been well documented in schizophrenia (SZ), there is limited data as to whether similar impairments are present in other persistent mental illnesses. Recent data indicate that NC impairments may be manifested in bipolar disorder (BPD) and that they persist across disease states, including euthymia. An important question is whether a comparable structure of NC impairments is present in the 2 diagnostic groups. OBJECTIVE: In a previous factor analytic study, we identified 6 factors to describe the basic underlying structure of neuropsycholo
