External and middle ear status related to evoked otoacoustic emission in neonates.

OBJECTIVE: Screening auditory status prior to neonatal hospital discharge to identify newborns with severe hearing impairment is an important pediatric care priority. Evoked otoacoustic emission (OAE) testing is a quick noninvasive method. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between external auditory canal and middle ear status with click-evoked OAE. It was hypothesized that vernix caseosa, debris in the ear canal, and middle ear fluid contribute to the OAE fail rate. DESIGN: All neonates had an initial OAE examination. A second investigator, "blinded" to the results,

Self-Reported Computer Vision Syndrome among Thai University Students in Virtual Classrooms during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Prevalence and Associated Factors.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, computer vision syndrome (CVS) related to online classrooms were unavoidable. This cross-sectional study aimed to explore the prevalence, characteristics and associated factors of CVS. A total of 527 students who were currently studying in a virtual classroom (70.40% female, mean (standard deviation; SD) age of 20.04 (2.17) years) were included. The prevalence of CVS assessed by an online CVS-Questionnaire was 81.0% (427/527). Comparing with those in the period before the online study, an increase in screen time (interquartile range) in students with and without C

Glaucoma - risk factors and current challenges in the diagnosis of a leading cause of visual impairment.

Worldwide, glaucoma affects about 3% of the population over the age of 50 years and is a leading cause of irreversible visual impairment among older people. Because glaucoma is asymptomatic in its early stages and can be challenging to diagnose clinically, it often remains undiagnosed until substantial vision loss has occurred. Efficient methods of glaucoma screening are therefore warranted for early detection of disease. Identification of risk factors for glaucoma - family history of glaucoma, older age, African or Asian ethnicities, raised intraocular pressure, and thin corneas - have helped

Genome-wide CRISPR knockout screening identifies novel disease-associated genes in retinal pigment epithelium cells.

Dysfunction and degeneration of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells are common pathological features observed in various retinal degenerative diseases. It has been proposed to treat these diseases by either protecting RPE cells or replacing them with new RPE cells derived from stem cells. However, the development of effective therapeutic strategies is still limited due to the insufficient understanding of the pathogenic factors involved in retinal degeneration and their impact on the function and survival of RPE cells. In this study, we employed genome-scale CRISPR knockout (KO) screening i

Letter to the Editor: Eye as a window to disease burden in pediatric acute leukemia.

Ocular involvement in pediatric acute leukemia is an increasingly recognized, clinically relevant manifestation, but prevalence and patterns vary. It may arise from direct leukemic infiltration or secondary hematologic abnormalities. Recent observational studies, including Eastern India cohorts, underscore systematic ophthalmic evaluation at diagnosis. In a cohort of 47 children by Parija et al published in the World Journal of Experimental Medicine, ocular findings were present in 40.4% at presentation; most were asymptomatic and retinal hemorrhages predominated. Other series report similar p

Prospective validation of deep-learning algorithms for diabetic retinopathy screening: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Deep-learning (DL) algorithms are widely promoted for diabetic-retinopathy (DR) screening, yet their prospective diagnostic accuracy is not well defined. PubMed, EMBASE and ClinicalTrials.gov were searched to April, 2025, for prospective evaluations of DL systems using color-fundus images. Two reviewers screened records, extracted data, and applied QUADAS-2. Hierarchical bivariate random-effects models produced pooled sensitivity and specificity for referable and vision-threatening DR), analyzed separately at patient and eye level. Twenty-one prespecified moderators were explored with uni- and

Integrating AI with PCR for Tuberculosis Diagnosis: Evaluating a Deep Learning Model for Chest X-Rays.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major global health challenge, and early, accurate diagnosis is essential for effective disease control. Chest radiography (CXR) is widely used for TB screening because of its accessibility, yet its limited specificity necessitates confirmatory molecular testing such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of a deep learning model (DLM) for TB detection using CXR and to compare its predictive accuracy with PCR results, specifically in a low-burden region. A retrospective dataset of CXR images and correspondi

Incidence of chorioretinitis and endophthalmitis in hospitalized patients with fungemia.

AIM/PURPOSE: Bloodstream candida infections can seed the eye via hematogenous spread and result in chorioretinitis or endophthalmitis. If undetected and untreated, this can result in permanent vision loss. Past studies evaluating incidence of ocular candidiasis among hospitalized patients with positive fungal blood cultures have demonstrated variable rates of occurrence, but recent studies have generally shown a lower incidence than was reported several decades ago. Given low rates of occurrence, the utility of screening patients with dilated fundus exams has been called into question. The pri

Ophthalmological assessment of children with neurofibromatosis type 1.

UNLABELLED: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a common autosomal dominant disorder, caused by mutations in the NF1 gene, located on chromosome band 17q11.2. In 1988, the National Institutes of Health created specific criteria for the diagnosis of NF1. Four cardinal criteria are assessed through ophthalmological screening: Lisch nodules, optic pathway glioma, a distinctive osseous lesion (sphenoid dysplasia), and the (orbital) plexiform neurofibroma. NF1 patients are prone to the development of central and peripheral nervous system tumors. Especially young children are at risk for growing optic

Long-term pediatric outcomes after first-trimester exposure to low-dose warfarin plus enoxaparin versus enoxaparin alone in pregnancies with mechanical heart valves: the KYBELE children study.

BACKGROUND: Pregnant women with mechanical heart valves (MHVs) require continuous anticoagulation; however, first-trimester exposure to warfarin raises concerns regarding fetal safety. Data on long-term pediatric outcomes after low-dose warfarin exposure remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate long-term growth, neurodevelopmental, cardiac, and endocrine outcomes in children antenatally exposed to low-dose warfarin combined with enoxaparin, compared with enoxaparin alone. METHODS: This single-center observational cohort study reports long-term pediatric follow-up outcomes of 32 children b

Prevalence and associated factors of visual impairment among preschool children in selected kindergarten schools in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia,2023 cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: A child's vision provides valuable information about the surrounding world. Eye problems in Ethiopia are among the major public health challenges. The prevalence rates of low vision and blindness in Ethiopia are 3.7% and 1.6%, respectively. The American Academy of Pediatrics, in its Recommendations for Preventive Pediatrics Health Care, recommends that ophthalmological evaluation be started from the age of 3 years to 6 years. These recommendations of screening are not being practiced in Ethiopia. With much of visual impairments being due to either preventable or treatable causes, e
