Contrast Enhancement without Transient Map Expansion for Species-Specific Vocalizations in Core Auditory Cortex during Learning.

Tonotopic map plasticity in the adult auditory cortex (AC) is a well established and oft-cited measure of auditory associative learning in classical conditioning paradigms. However, its necessity as an enduring memory trace has been debated, especially given a recent finding that the areal expansion of core AC tuned to a newly relevant frequency range may arise only transiently to support auditory learning. This has been reinforced by an ethological paradigm showing that map expansion is not observed for ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) or for ultrasound frequencies in postweaning dams for whom

Posterior cricoarytenoid muscle electrophysiologic changes are predictive of vocal cord paralysis with recurrent laryngeal nerve compressive injury in a canine model.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) is a dreaded complication of endocrine surgery. Intraoperative neural monitoring (IONM) has been increasingly utilized to assess the functional status of the RLN. Although the posterior cricoarytenoid muscle (PCA) is innervated by the RLN as the abductor of the larynx, PCA electromyography (EMG) is infrequently recorded during IONM and PCA activity after RLN compressive injury remains poorly characterized. STUDY DESIGN: Single-subject prospective animal study. METHODS: We employed a canine model to identify postcricoid EMG

Tracheal occlusion alters pulmonary circulation in the fetal lamb with normally developing lungs.

BACKGROUND: Tracheal occlusion (TO) promotes fetal lung growth through an increase in intraluminal pressure. Although evidence suggests that fetal TO (FETO) decreases the occurrence of pulmonary hypertension in severe congenital diaphragmatic hernia, controversies on its effect on the pulmonary circulation remain. Therefore, we investigated the effects of FETO on the lung hemodynamics in a chronically catheterized fetal lamb model. METHODS: Fifteen pregnant ewes were operated on between 125 and 128 days of gestation (term: 145 days). Catheters and ultrasonic flow transducer were placed throug

Affective neuroscientific and neuropsychoanalytic approaches to two intractable psychiatric problems: why depression feels so bad and what addicts really want.

The affective foundations of depression and addictions are discussed from a cross-species - animal to human - perspective of translational psychiatric research. Depression is hypothesized to arise from an evolutionarily conserved mechanism to terminate protracted activation of separation-distress (PANIC/GRIEF) systems of the brain, a shutdown mechanism which may be in part mediated by down-regulation of dopamine based reward-SEEKING resources. This shutdown of the brain's core motivational machinery is organized by shifts in multiple peptide systems, particularly increased dynorphin (kappa opi

Spontaneous and evoked laryngeal electromyography of the thyroarytenoid muscles: a canine model for intraoperative recurrent laryngeal nerve monitoring.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to determine the feasibility of performing spontaneous and evoked intraoperative laryngeal electromyography (L-EMG) using nerve monitoring equipment and to compare recording electrode configurations and methods of recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) stimulation in dogs. METHODS: Four beagles underwent crush injury of the left RLN, and 2 beagles underwent left RLN transection. Serial spontaneous and evoked L-EMG was recorded with the NIM-Response nerve monitoring system under sedation. Transesophageal, percutaneous, and direct open RLN stimulation was performed. Recordings of

Surgical and conservative management of bilateral dynamic laryngeal collapse associated with poll flexion in harness race horses.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that in bilateral dynamic laryngeal collapse associated with poll flexion, vocal fold collapse (VFC) is the initial abnormal event that induces further laryngeal collapse, and that racing performance would therefore be substantially improved after bilateral ventriculocordectomy in affected individuals. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. ANIMALS: Twenty-six horses. METHODS: Medical records (1998-2006) of harness racehorses admitted for high-speed treadmill videoendoscopy (HSTV) that had bilateral dynamic laryngeal collapse associated with poll flexion were r

PKA and ERK, but not PKC, in the amygdala contribute to pain-related synaptic plasticity and behavior.

The laterocapsular division of the central nucleus of the amygdala (CeLC) has emerged as an important site of pain-related plasticity and pain modulation. Glutamate and neuropeptide receptors in the CeLC contribute to synaptic and behavioral changes in the arthritis pain model, but the intracellular signaling pathways remain to be determined. This study addressed the role of PKA, PKC, and ERK in the CeLC. Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were used in all experiments. Whole-cell patch-clamp recordings of CeLC neurons were made in brain slices from normal rats and from rats with a kaolin/carrageen

5-HT(1A) receptor subsensitivity in infancy and supersensitivity in adulthood in an animal model of depression.

Flinders Sensitive Line (FSL) rats, a genetic animal model of depression, exhibit 5-HT abnormalities including an increased sensitivity to serotonergic agonists. Studies of 8-hydroxy-2-(dipropylamino)tetralin (8-OH-DPAT)-induced hypothermia have shown 5-HT(1A) receptor supersensitivity in adult FSL rats. The aims of the present study were to: (a) further characterize the 5-HT(1A) system in adult FSL rats by assessing their behavioral responses to 8-OH-DPAT (the 'serotonergic syndrome'-a pattern of stereotypic behavior on a number of parameters). (b) Examine behavioral and hypothermic responses

Differential effects of morphine on noradrenaline release in brain regions of stressed and non-stressed rats.

Effects of morphine on noradrenaline (NA) turnover in the 8 brain regions were investigated in non-stressed and stressed rats. Morphine at 3 mg/kg and 6 mg/kg caused dose-dependent increases in levels of 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylethyleneglycol sulfate (MHPG-SO4), the major metabolite of brain NA, in the hypothalamus, amygdala, thalamus, hippocampus and midbrain and decreases in NA levels in the first 4 of these regions. In contrast to these enhancing effects of morphine on NA release in non-stressed rats, pretreatment with morphine at 6 mg/kg significantly attenuated immobilization-stress-indu

Loss of offspring Peg3 reduces neonatal ultrasonic vocalizations and increases maternal anxiety in wild-type mothers.

Depression and anxiety are the most common mental health conditions during pregnancy and can impair the normal development of mother-infant interactions. These adversities are associated with low birth weight and increased risk of behavioural disorders in children. We recently reported reduced expression of the imprinted gene PATERNALLY EXPRESSED GENE 3 (PEG3) in placenta of human infants born to depressed mothers. Expression of Peg3 in the brain has previously been linked maternal behaviour in rodents, at least in some studies, with mutant dams neglecting their pups. However, in our human stu

Multiple autism-like behaviors in a novel transgenic mouse model.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnoses are behaviorally based with no defined universal biomarkers, occur at a 1:110 ratio in the population, and predominantly affect males compared to females at approximately a 4:1 ratio. One approach to investigate and identify causes of ASD is to use organisms that display abnormal behavioral responses that model ASD-related impairments. This study describes a novel transgenic mouse, MALTT, which was generated using a forward genetics approach. It was determined that the transgene integrated within a non-coding region on the X chromosome. The MALTT line e

Selectivity of canary HVC neurons for the bird's own song: modulation by photoperiodic conditions.

To what extent seasonal factors modify the neuronal functional properties within the nuclei of the avian song system remains an open question. In adult songbirds, neurons of the song premotor nucleus HVC (used as a proper name) exhibit selective responses for the bird's own song (BOS). Here we examine whether, outside the breeding season, when songs are less stereotyped, HVC neurons of male canaries still respond selectively to the BOS produced during this period. In an initial experiment, single-unit recordings (n = 114) revealed that the neuronal selectivity for the current BOS was attenuate

The whale binaural rings experiment: Long-range acoustic monitoring of North Atlantic right whales in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

Effective real-time monitoring of baleen whales over broad areas was assessed using two 20-m circular hydrophone arrays designed for detecting and localizing North Atlantic right whale (NARW) upcalls. The system was deployed over a 24-d period in August 2021 to monitor a ∼80-km-wide trough heavily frequented by NARWs in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Key functional parameters throughout the processing chain were estimated from in situ conditions and integrated with numerical simulations. The spatiotemporal performances of the system-using deep-learning neural networks upcall detection and bearing-c

Vocalization-induced middle ear muscle reflex and auditory fovea do not contribute to the unimpaired auditory sensitivity after intense noise exposure in the CF-FM bat, Hipposideros pratti.

Behaviors and auditory physiological responses of some species of echolocating bats remain unaffected after exposure to intense noise, but information on the underlying mechanisms remains limited. Here, we studied whether the vocalization-induced middle ear muscle (MEM) contractions (MEM reflex) and auditory fovea contributed to the unimpaired auditory sensitivity of constant frequency-frequency modulation (CF-FM) bats after exposure to broad-band intense noise. The vocalizations of the CF-FM bat, Hipposideros pratti, were inhibited through anesthesia to eliminate the vocalization-induced MEM

Mucosal Injection of the Silicon Phthalocyanine Pc 4 in a Rabbit Model-A Pilot Study.

OBJECTIVE: The silicon phthalocyanine Pc 4 is a photosensitizing agent previously shown to be a promising treatment for cutaneous neoplasms using photodynamic therapy (PDT). Based on prior preclinical studies, we believe Pc 4-PDT has potential as a targeted treatment of human recurrent respiratory papillomatosis or laryngeal leukoplakia by direct injection into mucosal surfaces. METHODS: This was a proof-of-concept pilot study assessing direct mucosal injection of Pc 4 into buccal and vocal fold mucosae in a rabbit model. Five New Zealand white rabbits underwent tattooing of bilateral buccal

Comparison of Recording Electrode Arrays in Endotracheal Thyroid Monitoring Tubes in a Porcine Model.

OBJECTIVES: Alteration in positioning or head manipulation during thyroid surgery can lead to endotracheal tube movement and potentially a change in intraoperative neural monitoring readings. We sought to study the impact of positional changes on two different commercially available recording electrode arrays. MATERIALS: Eight pigs divided equally into two study groups based on recording electrode arrays were used: Neurosign Lantern Laryngeal Electrode (LLE) (Neurosign_Technomed, The Netherlands) and Medtronic NIM EMG [neural integrity monitor electromyogram] endotracheal tube (ETT) (Medtroni

Transcutaneous Recording During Intraoperative Neuromonitoring in Thyroid Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) palsy remains a major source of morbidity after thyroid surgeries. Intraoperative neural monitoring (IONM) has gained increasing acceptance as an adjunct to standard practice of visual RLN identification. Endotracheal tube (ETT) surface recording electrodes systems are now widely used for IONM; however, a malpositioned ETT can cause false IONM results and requires time-consuming intraoperative verification of the ETT position and readjustment by the anesthesiologist. The aim of this experimental study was to evaluate the feasibility of the transcutan
