We describe the case of a 51-year-old right-handed man who was affected by a transcortical alexia with agraphia and aphasia. Transcortical alexia produces errors in both reading and writing while copying is preserved. The patient had a severe alexia and was unable to read letters, words or sentences. OBJECTIVE: Reliable assessment of cognitive functions is a challenging task in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients unable to speak and write. We therefore present an eye-tracking based neuropsychological screening tool based on the Edinburgh Cognitive and Behavioural ALS Screen (ECAS), a standard screening tool for cognitive deficits in ALS.
METHODS: In total, 46 ALS patients and 50 healthy controls matched for age, gender and education were tested with an oculomotor based and a standard paper-and-pencil version of the ECAS.

The first priority was somatic and psychological care. However, lack of juridical counseling led to delay in victim status recognition. Legal procedures are essentials in patients' recovery. We propose guidelines for medical certificate writing and first response legal orientation of terrorism victims.

We describe a patient with left unilateral ideomotor apraxia without left-sided agraphia caused by a callosal lesion that was demonstrated by magnetic resonance imaging. The clinical features, together with data in the literature, suggest that the callosal fibers for writing are concentrated in the posterior corpus callosum, while those for praxis cross in the more rostral part of the posterior half of the callosum.

A cellular variant of congenital mesoblastic nephroma (CMN) occurring in a newborn is presented. Coincidental findings were congenital hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (CHPS) and nephrocalcinotic hypercalcemia that reverted after nephrectomy. As of the day of writing, this multiple association has not been reported. The authors believe that both CMN and CHPS could be interpreted as fibroblastic proliferative-related entities. Transient hypercalcemia seems to be a paraneoplastic phenomenon.

Eighty cases of the gastro-intestinal form of alpha-chain disease had been reported up to the time of writing this communication (September 1975). All patients were non-Caucasians. This report presents a case of this in an Englishman who became ill whilst working the tropics.
