PURPOSE: The present study examined delinquent behavior from adolescence into adulthood within the dual systems model of adolescent risk-taking, which identifies maturational patterns of socioemotional and cognitive control systems as predictors of risk-taking. The role of sleep was also investigated within the relationship.
METHODS: Hierarchical regression and path analysis examined delinquency at three waves (1996, 2001, and 2008) of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health.
RESULTS: Impulse control and sensation-seeking predicted concurrent delinquent behavior at all three wav

The improved survival of pediatric recipients of solid organ transplants has prompted increased attention to quality of life issues. These include attainment of normal growth, involvement in romantic relationships, and the desire to control fertility. As an increasing number of adolescent transplant recipients are involved in normal social and sexual relationships, they require careful attention to their gynecologic and reproductive health care needs. Anticipating the onset of sexual activity before it occurs may help to prevent a mistimed pregnancy by providing or prescribing condoms and emer

BACKGROUND: Cam morphology developed during adolescent increases the risk of hip osteoarthritis by 4.3-6.2-fold over 5 and 10 years. Although cam morphology are believed to occur during the growth period, when significant physical changes take place, no studies have examined the relationship with physical maturation indicators.
AIM: The aim of this study was twofold: (1) to examine the prevalence of cam morphology in Japanese adolescent football players.; (2) to investigate if cam morphology development is associated with peak height velocity age(PHVA) status.
METHODS: Fifty-seven adolescent

BACKGROUND: Early life stress (ELS) is associated with an increased risk of substance use in adolescence. The interaction of puberty with neurodevelopment during adolescence increases the sensitivity of the brain to both sex and stress hormones. This sensitivity may result in sex-specific pathways from ELS to adolescent alcohol use initiation. The current study examines the effect of ELS on alcohol initiation by age 13 via pubertal mediators, separated by sex and adjusted for the independent effects of age.
METHODS: Adolescents from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study (ABCD; N =

Background: Adolescent cannabis use is an established risk factor for the development of psychosis, but the premorbid vulnerability factors and specificity versus generality of the psychotic symptom domains affected in cannabis-psychosis relationships remain incompletely understood. To improve our understanding of these relationships, we used longitudinal data to examine the individual and interactive effects of preadolescent transmissible liability to substance use disorders (SUD), measured via the transmissible liability index (TLI), and adolescent cannabis use on the development of two dist

BACKGROUND: Although early life adversity (ELA) increases risk for psychopathology, mechanisms linking ELA with the onset of psychopathology remain poorly understood. Conceptual models have argued that ELA accelerates development. It is unknown whether all forms of ELA are associated with accelerated development or whether early maturation is a potential mechanism linking ELA with psychopathology. We examine whether two distinct dimensions of ELA - threat and deprivation - have differential associations with pubertal timing in girls, and evaluate whether accelerated pubertal timing is a mechan

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a significant source of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The primary risk factors for acquiring HPV are generally associated with sexual activity. Evidence suggests that condoms provide some protection against infection and disease progression, but any genital contact is sufficient for HPV transmission. HPV is so common and transmissible that having just one sexual partner often results in infection. Indeed, cumulative prevalence rates are as high as 82% among adolescent women in select populations. As such, nearly all sexually active adolescents are at high ris

Emerging evidence suggests that emotion malleability beliefs are associated with adolescents' emotion regulation and social interactions. However, it is unclear how this association is impacted by family interaction, which plays a crucial role in adolescent emotional development. The present study used Actor-Partner Interdependence Mediation Models (APIMeMs) to examine how parents' and adolescents' emotion malleability beliefs are linked to their own and each other's emotion regulation (cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression) in parent-adolescent dyads and how the interdependence is

Adolescent binge drinking is a risk behavior associated with the development of neuropsychiatric disorders later in life, but the pathophysiological mechanisms rendering the adolescent brain vulnerable to the long-term consequences of heavy alcohol consumption are only partially understood. Here, we used a mouse model of adolescent binge drinking and focussed on G protein-gated inwardly rectifying potassium (GIRK) channels which are a molecular target of both ethanol and the pluripotent growth and differentiation factor activin A. In whole-cell recordings from dentate gyrus granule cells in br

Immigrant family relationships help to buffer the adolescent adoption of health risk behaviors but can be strained by post-immigration structural and cultural barriers. This study qualitatively examines how Somali adolescent-parent relationship factors influence Somali adolescent tobacco use and identifies areas for further family support to prevent Somali adolescent tobacco use. We conducted fifteen key informant interviews with professionals serving the Somali community in clinical, educational, religious, or other community organization roles in one Minnesota metropolitan region. INTRODUCTION: Addiction is developmentally a pediatric-onset disease. Adolescent addiction recently gained the nation's attention due to the steep increase in opioid-related drug overdose deaths. Educating future adolescent health providers on adolescent addiction is a strategic initiative to mitigate the impact of this challenging public health concern.
METHODS: We used a logic model worksheet to identify key target areas informing the curriculum content development. The curriculum was written to be delivered in three successive parts-the Science of Addiction, Adolescence and Addiction, and

BACKGROUND: This study examined adolescent delinquency and alcohol use in relation to young adult crime, alcohol use disorders (AUDs), and risky sex. Analyses further examined the influences of late childhood involvement in these problem behavior outcomes, with mediation through teen delinquency and alcohol use, and examined differences in the pathways for youth from low- compared to middle-income backgrounds.
METHOD: Multiple-group latent growth curve modeling was conducted using data collected from a sample of 808 youth followed from age 10 to age 24. Self-report assessments included delinq

Behavioral theories inform the development of lifestyle interventions to address low participation in physical activity (PA); however, relatively little is known about the value of self-determination theory (SDT) for explaining screen time (ST) behaviors or in extending SDT into a dyadic context. Actor-partner (i.e., parent-adolescent) interdependence models (APIMs) allow for examination of these interpersonal relationships. The purpose of this study was to examine PA and ST among parent-adolescent dyads using the cross-sectional Family Life, Activity, Sun, Health, and Eating (FLASHE) Study. P

BACKGROUND: Family-based treatment (FBT) is the first-line treatment for adolescent anorexia nervosa (AN). Yet, remission is not achieved for about half of adolescents with AN receiving FBT. Understanding patient- and parent-level factors that predict FBT response may inform treatment development and improve outcomes.
METHODS: Network analysis was used to identify the most central symptoms of AN in adolescents who completed the Eating Disorder Examination (EDE) prior to FBT (N = 409). Bridge pathways between adolescent AN and parental self-efficacy in facilitating their child's recovery from

OBJECTIVES: Children with cleft lip and palate (CLP) are seen to have reduced airway size and large adenoids, which might lead to different characteristics in the upper airway and surrounding tissues from both morphological and functional perspectives. Decrease in adenoid size and increase in need ratio in cleft patients might lead to velopharyngeal incompetency (VPI) and development of nasality in adulthood. No studies have been conducted on the Indian population with variables contributing to VPI. So the aim was to evaluate the size and position of the adenoids, upper airway, maxilla, velum

Age-related developmental differences in sensitivity to the acute effects of alcohol may play an important role in the development of alcoholism. The present study was designed to evaluate the acute effects of alcohol on cortical electroencephalogram (EEG) in adolescent (P36) and adult (P78) Wistar rats. Five minutes of EEG was recorded after administration of 0, 0.75 or 1.5 g/kg alcohol. The righting reflex was performed to measure the sedative effects of alcohol (3.5 g/kg) and total sleeping time for each rat. Our results showed that alcohol (1.5 g/kg) increased power in the 1-2 Hz band and
