The modern investigation and management of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD).

Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease results from impaired function of the LOS and acid clearance of the distal oesophagus. Most patients do not require investigation and respond either to lifestyle changes, antacid/alginates, H2A, PPI or a combination of these treatments. Surgery is only rarely indicated.

All-natural sodium alginate films reinforced with Rana chensinensis ovum protein isolate/xanthan gum-stabilized Pickering emulsions for active preservation and freshness indication.

To address food spoilage and real-time monitoring, an all-natural multifunctional composite film was developed by incorporating Rana chensinensis ovum protein isolate/xanthan gum-lemon essential oil (RCOPI/XG-LEO) Pickering emulsion and anthocyanin, which achieved active preservation and visual sensing. The Pickering emulsion with notable stability enhanced the film hydrophobicity and thickness, while reducing water content (WC) and moisture absorption (MA). The film achieved optimal performance at an emulsion addition of 2 mL. The film degradation rate reached 60.89% within four weeks, with s

3D Printed Graphene Oxide/Calcium Alginate/Strontium-Doped Hydroxyapatite Composite Scaffolds with Enhanced Osteogenic and Angiogenic Properties for Critical-Size Bone Defect Repair.

The repair of critical-sized bone defects is hindered by insufficient vascularization, an unfavorable osteogenic microenvironment, and the limitations of conventional materials. Systematic studies on ternary composites of graphene oxide (GO), calcium alginate (CA), and strontium-doped hydroxyapatite (Sr-HA) remain limited, particularly regarding how different strontium substitution levels influence scaffold rheology, mechanics, ion release, osteogenic activity, and vascular-associated responses. Here, graphene oxide/calcium alginate/strontium-doped hydroxyapatite scaffolds (3D GCHs) were fabri

Multiscale protection of anthocyanin via zein/cinnamaldehyde/sodium alginate core-shell nanoparticles enable UV-stabilized colorimetric label for monitoring shrimp and fish freshness.

Anthocyanin-based pH-responsive indicators are promising for food freshness monitoring, but UV exposure during transportation and retail display causes chromophore degradation and fading. Herein, core-shell sodium alginate/cinnamaldehyde/zein/anthocyanin nanoparticles (SCZC) were fabricated via a multiscale protection strategy. Anthocyanins were confined in a hydrophobic zein core through hydrophobic and π-π interactions, while cinnamaldehyde-assisted interfacial densification and a sodium alginate shell provided diffusion barriers against external stresses. After incorporation into a carboxym

Sequential removal of cyanide and phenol using zerovalent iron and Rhodococcus pyridinivorans PDB9T NS-1 encapsulated in a freeze-dried Ba-alginate nano-biohybrid system.

Phenolic compounds and cyanides are the major pollutants in coke-oven wastewater, posing serious human health hazards and ecosystem damage. Although the microbial biodegradation of phenolic pollutants is an eco-friendly and efficient technique, even very low cyanide concentrations inhibit the growth of phenol-degrading microorganisms. Furthermore, below pH 10, cyanide is converted into HCN gas (pK a = 9.2). Therefore, cyanide treatment requires a pH greater than 10; however, microbial growth is not possible at such a high pH. Thus, in the present study, a sequential nano-microbial system of na

Synthesis and characterization of sodium alginate-chitosan liposome gel beads via electrostatic complexation: A dual-network platform for co-delivery of folic acid and vitamin E.

We herein developed sodium alginate (SA)-chitosan (CS) dual-network liposome gel beads (S-C-L) using electrostatic complexation to co-deliver of folic acid (FA) and vitamin E (VE). The effects of varying SA-to-CS mass ratios (9:1, 8:2, 7:3, 6:4, 1:1, 4:6, and 3:7) on beads' microstructure, physicochemical traits, and encapsulation performance were systematically assessed. The findings indicated that even minimal CS incorporation markedly improved the mechanical strength, stability and overall functionality of the liposome gel beads compared with those made solely from SA (S-L). At a 9:1 SA-to-

Sodium alginate-based dual-responsive nanoparticles co-loaded with baicalin and doxorubicin induce ferroptosis in hepatocellular carcinoma associated with the PI3K/AKT/FoxO3α axis regulation.

BACKGROUND: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has high malignancy, poor prognosis, and frequent chemo-resistance. Doxorubicin (DOX) has strong anti-tumor activity but severe systemic toxicity; baicalin (BAI) acts against HCC yet has poor solubility and low bioavailability. Marine sodium alginate (SA) is a biocompatible carrier for responsive nanomedicines. We fabricated pH/GSH dual-responsive SA nanoparticles co-loaded with BAI and DOX (DOX/BAI NPs), tested synergistic anti-HCC activity, and verified the correlation between the PI3K/AKT/FOXO3α axis and DOX/BAI NPs-induced ferroptosis. METHODS: A

Microalgae-Derived Extracellular Vesicle-Loaded 3D Alginate Hydrogels Promote In Vitro Skin and Bone Repair through Dual Fibroblast and Mesenchymal Stem Cell Modulation.

Chronic skin wounds with underlying bone exposure represent a major clinical challenge, characterized by impaired healing and limited tissue regeneration. Sustainable, biologically active biomaterials capable of addressing both cutaneous and bone repair remain highly desirable. Here, we developed three-dimensional (3D) printed sodium alginate (SA) and alginate/hydroxyapatite (SA/HAP) hydrogels incorporating microalgae-derived extracellular vesicles (MdEVs) obtained fromEttlia oleoabundans. The constructs were characterized for their mechanical, structural, and biological properties, and evalua

In situ incorporation of boronate into carbonized alginate nanogels for targeted inhibition of triple-negative breast cancer metastasis by inducing cytoskeletal disruption, cell growth arrest, and apoptosis.

Metastasis is the primary cause of cancer mortality, and its prevention is particularly challenging due to the complex tumor microenvironment. Carbon nanomaterials are well known to act as drug delivery systems for therapeutics. Nonetheless, their inherent capabilities in combating tumor cells remain underexplored. In this study, we report the synthesis and characterization of novel boronate-incorporated alginate carbon nanogels (Bor/Alg-CNGs) as promising anti-metastatic agents for effectively suppressing migration and invasion of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) cells, while triggering c

The graphene oxide/alginate gel loaded with platelet-rich plasma-derived exosomes regulate notch 1 signaling pathway to promote diabetic foot wound healing.

Exosomes have promising applications in accelerating wound healing; however, it remains a challenge for exosomes to effectively promote healing of damaged wounds such as diabetic foot ulcers. The aim of this study was to produce an exosome that promotes wound healing in diabetic foot ulcers and to investigate its potential mechanism. Firstly, graphene oxide/alginate gel loaded with platelet-rich plasma-derived exosomes (GO/Alg + Exo) was prepared and characterized, and then the cytotoxicity and function of the gel were detected in vitro by cell survival, immunofluorescence and scratch test. Sweet potato protein hydrolysates solidified calcium-induced alginate gel for enhancing the encapsulation efficiency and long-term stability of purple sweet potato anthocyanins in beads.

Based on the previous research, this work aimed to reveal the effect of sweet potato protein hydrolysates (SPPHs) with different molecular weights (1000, 3000, and 8000 Da) at 0.5 % on the gelation behavior of calcium-induced sodium alginate (SA), and the encapsulation efficiency and storage stability of purple sweet potato anthocyanins (PSPA) in calcium-induced alginate gel beads was determined. Results indicated that SPPHs with a molecular weight of 8000 Da formed hydrogen bonds and other interactions with SA, which strengthened the internal network connections of the gel, significantly enha

Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate Combined with Ultra-Purified Alginate Bioresorbable Gel Enhances Intervertebral Disc Repair in a Canine Model: A Preclinical Proof-of-Concept Study.

Although discectomy is commonly performed for lumbar intervertebral disc (IVD) herniation, the capacity for tissue repair after surgery is limited, resulting in residual lower back pain, recurrence of IVD herniation, and progression of IVD degeneration. Cell-based therapies, as one-step procedures, are desirable for enhancing IVD repair. This study aimed to investigate the therapeutic efficacy of a combination of newly developed ultra-purified alginate (UPAL) gel and bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) implantation for IVD repair after discectomy. Prior to an in vivo study, the cell concen

Mussel- and nacre-inspired dual-bionic alginate-based hydrogel coating with multi-matrix applicability, high separation stability and antifouling performance for oil/water separation.

Natural hydrogel-modified porous matrices with superwetting interfaces are ideal for oil/water separation. In this study, inspired by two marine organisms, a novel hydrogel coating with multi-matrix suitability, high oil/water separation capability and antifouling properties was developed. Specifically, inspired by mussel byssus, hydrogel coating was successfully deposited on porous matrix surface based on the introduction of tannic acid (TA). Moreover, inspired by the "brick and mortar" microstructure of Pinctada nacre, silica particles were in-situ synthesized in the sodium alginate (SA)/Ca2

Role of alginate in the mechanism by which brown seaweed Saccharina japonica intake alleviates an increase in blood pressure in 2-kidney, 1-clip renovascular hypertensive rats.

BACKGROUND: The intake of Saccharina japonica (SJ), a widely consumed brown seaweed, has been reported to decrease blood pressure (BP) in hypertensive rats. It has been suggested that this effect is related to an increase in fecal sodium excretion (SE) by alginate (Alg) to the gastrointestinal tract; however, the mechanism is still unclear. This study investigated how different seaweeds with different amounts of Alg suppressed BP increase and enhanced fecal SE in 2-kidney, 1-clip renovascular hypertensive (2K1C) rats given SJ diet. METHODS: Rats with 2K1C or sham operation were fed a normal-/

A long-term follow-up of safety and clinical efficacy of NTCELL® [Immunoprotected (Alginate-encapsulated) porcine choroid plexus cells for xenotransplantation] in patients with Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: In 2019, we published the results of a Phase IIb randomized controlled trial of putaminal encapsulated porcine choroid plexus cell (termed NTCELL®) administration in patients with Parkinson's disease. This study failed to meet its primary efficacy end-point of a change in UPDRS part III score in the 'off' state at 26-weeks post-implant. However, a number of secondary end-points reached statistical significance. We questioned whether with longer follow-up, clinically significant improvements would be observed. For this reason, we decided to follow-up all patients periodically to w

The Inhibitory Effect of Propylene Glycol Alginate Sodium Sulfate on Fibroblast Growth Factor 2-Mediated Angiogenesis and Invasion in Murine Melanoma B16-F10 Cells In Vitro.

Melanoma is one of the most malignant and aggressive types of cancer worldwide. Fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2) is one of the critical regulators of melanoma angiogenesis and metastasis; thus, it might be an effective anti-cancer strategy to explore FGF2-targeting drug candidates from existing drugs. In this study, we evaluate the effect of the marine drug propylene glycol alginate sodium sulfate (PSS) on FGF2-mediated angiogenesis and invasion. The data shows that FGF2 selectively bound to PSS with high affinity. PSS inhibited FGF2-mediated angiogenesis in a rat aortic ring model and suppre
