Extensive persistent pupillary membranes: conservative management.

Extensive persistent pupillary membranes (PPMS) may appear to occlude the pupil so completely as to preclude useful vision. They often motivate aggressive interventions. We present a 6-year-old girl with bilateral extensive densely pigmented pupillary membranes in whom good vision was obtained without pharmacologic, laser, or surgical intervention. There was associated ametropic amblyopia and exotropia in the patient, which were effectively treated with spectacles and occlusion therapy, with the patient responding conventionally. In view of our findings, we recommend a trial of conservative ma…

Treatment of congenital glaucoma.

We reviewed 37 consecutive patients who had undergone at least one goniotomy, filtering surgery, and patching for amblyopia because of congenital glaucoma between 1969 and 1979. Of 32 eyes treated for uncomplicated congenital glaucoma, 25 (78%) achieved satisfactory control of intraocular pressure. Seven of the 12 eyes (58%) for which Snellen visual acuities could be obtained had visual acuities of 6/15 (20/50) or better. Of eight eyes treated for complicated congenital glaucoma, four (50%) achieved satisfactory control of intraocular pressure, but the visual acuities of these patients could n…

Surgical Outcomes of Pediatric Blepharoptosis.

OBJECTIVES: The results of ptosis surgery and revision surgery performed in blepharoptosis of different etiologies in the paediatric age group were evaluated. METHODS: The 78 eyes of 66 patients followed up at our clinic between 2020 and 2024 were retrospectively examined. The patient's age, gender, etiology, preoperative and postoperative Best Corrected Visual Acuity (BCVA), levator function, Margin Reflex Distance-1 (MRD-1), surgical techniques and revisions performed, amount of lagophthalmos, Bell's phenomenon, strabismus and amblyopia status were evaluated. Successful surgical treatment of idiopathic tractional corectopia complicated by persistent pupillae membrane. Case report.

INTRODUCTION: Idiopathic tractional corectopia (ITC) is a rare congenital anomaly affecting the pupil's position and shape. In the literatur … is combined with PPM, usually unilateral, and can progress, leading to visual axis obstruction and amblyopia development. Various treatments have been proposed, involving PPM strand dissection and pupil sphincterotomy, which can cause complications such as loss of pupil shape and ability to dilate evenly, resulting in a cosmetic defect. The newly developed …

The cause of VI in all these three patients (100%) was amblyopia due to high refractive errors (high ametropia and astigmatism). Regarding the main refractive errors leading to VI among these three patients, one patient had bilateral high hyperopia (compound hyperopic astigmatism), one of them had bilateral high …

Rates of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), glaucoma, cataract and amblyopia remained very low (weighted average of 0.15, 0.14, 0.09 and 0.03 per 100,000, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of CHB certifications in Israel remained stable with a slight increase, stemming chiefly from RDYS resurgence and an increase in …

Selective fovea-related deprived activation in retinotopic and high-order visual cortex of human amblyopes.

Amblyopia is a visual disorder starting at early childhood and characterized by reduced visual acuity not of optical origin or due to any eye disease. One expression of such an anomalous early visual experience is abnormal foveal vision. In a previous fMRI study, faces that were presented to amblyopic eyes evoked little response compared to houses in high-order visual areas. Patients also demonstrated reduced recognition of facial expression, raising the possibility that these face-selective abnormalities are related to foveal vision deficit. Whether this deficit originates in low-level proces…

Giant Lacrimal Gland Cyst in a Pediatric Patient: Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Lacrimal gland cysts are rare clinical entities in the pediatric population. Herein is described a 6-year-old male patient presenting with progressive left upper lid ptosis, found to have a large ipsilateral superotemporal orbital mass. Diagnosis of a giant lacrimal gland cyst was confirmed excisional biopsy. Despite the resolution of mechanical blepharoptosis, the patient maintained visual acuity limitation due to suspected deprivation amblyopia. The pathophysiology and clinical manifestations of lacrimal gland cysts in the pediatric population are reviewed to emphasize the importance of expe…

[Anisometropia can only be detected by a monocular vision examination].

In recent years the Eye Department at Aalborg University Hospital has had many referrals of older children with severe amblyopia due to anisometropia. Anisometropia is not visible, thus a monocular vision examination is needed in order to detect it. Early detection increases the possibilities for a better post treatment visual acuity. Recent studies indicate positive treatment response also in older children, and some older individuals respond dramatically. Currently it is not possible to predict who will respond, and therefore treatment should be offered despite the age of the child if the ch…
