Guillain-Barré syndrome and anti-ganglioside antibodies: a clinician-scientist's journey.

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is the most frequent cause of acute flaccid paralysis. Having seen my first GBS patient in 1989, I have since then dedicated my time in research towards understanding the pathogenesis of GBS. Along with several colleagues, we identified IgG autoantibodies against ganglioside GM1 in two patients with GBS subsequent to Campylobacter jejuni enteritis. We proceeded to demonstrate molecular mimicry between GM1 and bacterial lipo-oligosaccharide of C. jejuni isolated from a patient with GBS. Our group then established a disease model for GBS by sensitization with GM1 or

Hypnosis in the treatment of depression: considerations in research design and methods.

Depressive disorders constitute a serious problem in the United States and around the world. The appearance of practice guidelines and lists of evidenced-based therapies suggests that adequate treatments for depression exist. However, a careful consideration of what is known and not known about the treatment of depression leaves plenty of room for improved approaches to addressing this condition. Although there has been a dearth of research on the treatment of depression using hypnosis, there are several compelling arguments for the inclusion of hypnotic approaches in the array of current stra

[Gambling and internet addiction: review and research agenda].

Behavioral addictions, especially pathological gambling and internet addiction, have become a growing concern in research and health policy. Similarities between behavioral addictions and substance dependency are currently being discussed in the scientific community. Unfortunately the number of scientific studies on pathological gambling and internet addiction is still very low. The estimated prevalence of pathological gambling among the German population is 0.2-0.5%. These numbers are comparable to prevalence rates reported for illegal drug dependency. About 1.5 million people, i.e. 3% of the

Do effectiveness ("real world") studies on antipsychotics tell us the real truth?

In recent years, so-called "effectiveness studies" have gained increasing importance in the context of evidence-based medicine. These studies supposedly follow less restrictive methodological standards than phase III studies in terms of patient selection, co-medication and other design issues, and their results should therefore be better generalisable than those of phase III studies. Effectiveness studies, like other types of phase IV studies, can therefore contribute to the knowledge about antipsychotics or other psychopharmaceuticals and supply relevant information in addition to that gained

From Dual Targeting to Clinical Validation: A Translational Framework for Bispecific Antibody-Drug Conjugates.

Bispecific antibody-drug conjugates (bsADCs) are being developed to address limitations of conventional ADCs, including heterogeneous antigen expression, insufficient tumor-normal discrimination, and suboptimal intracellular trafficking. This review evaluates bsADCs from a preclinical-to-clinical translational perspective and defines the evidence needed to justify the added complexity of bispecific design. A structured search of PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, clinical-trial registries, and major oncology conference proceedings was conducted through 29 July 2026. Dual-antigen b

Mechanisms and reversal strategies of liver fibrosis: from regulation of cell fate to clinical translation.

BACKGROUND: Liver fibrosis is a dynamic and reversible pathological process underlying chronic liver diseases, characterized by excessive extracellular matrix deposition and progressive hepatic architectural distortion. It acts as a critical precursor to cirrhosis, hepatic decompensation, and hepatocellular carcinoma, imposing a substantial global disease burden. MAIN BODY: Accumulating evidence indicates that liver fibrosis is a highly plastic process governed by multicellular crosstalk, immune microenvironment remodeling, epigenetic-metabolic coupling, and mechanotransduction. This review o

Alzheimer's disease: Time to reassess research and clinical priorities.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) remains one of the most pressing challenges in contemporary neurology, with growing evidence highlighting the limitations of the amyloid hypothesis and monomodal therapies. This editorial advocates for a shift toward multidimensional research and therapeutic frameworks that integrate molecular, electrophysiological, neuroimaging, and behavioral data. Emphasis is placed on the potential of microRNA-based biomarkers, electroencephalography (EEG) analysis, and non-invasive methods to improve early diagnosis. Emerging multimodal treatment strategies - including immunothera

Immunometabolic crosstalk in knee osteoarthritis: a bibliometric and translational analysis (2000-2025).

BACKGROUND: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) has traditionally been regarded as a localized degenerative joint disorder; however, accumulating evidence increasingly supports a critical role for immunometabolic dysfunction, chronic low-grade inflammation, and systemic metabolic alterations in disease initiation and progression. Although research in this multidisciplinary field is growing rapidly, the global intellectual structure, emerging mechanistic themes, and the evolution of the translation of KOA research remain inadequately documented. METHODS: This study used a multi-database bibliometric and

Building Research Leadership for Global Health Impact.

Global health research training programs have traditionally emphasized methodological competencies, yet technical skills alone cannot ensure equitable partnerships, effective crosscultural collaboration, or durable and locally relevant research impact in international settings. The Research Leadership Academy (RLA) was developed to fill this gap. The RLA is a structured leadership curriculum embedded within the NIH Fogarty-funded UJMT LAUNCH global health research fellowship grounded in experiential learning and established global leadership frameworks. The RLA aligns leadership training with
