Homelessness and Sexual Identity Among Middle School Students.

BACKGROUND: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, or questioning (LGBQ) high school students experience higher rates of homelessness than their heterosexual peers. Moreover, LGBQ high school students are more likely to stay in riskier locations (eg, with a stranger) and less likely to stay in a shelter. This study tested whether these trends also apply to middle school students. METHODS: Using representative data, we examined sexual identity and homelessness among Los Angeles Unified School District middle school students. RESULTS: Nearly 10% of middle school students identified as LGBQ and 23.5% experien

Efficacy of smoking cessation intervention among special populations: review of the literature from 2000 to 2005.

The United States Public Health Service acknowledges in the 2000 Clinical Practice Guideline for Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence that certain special populations have unique needs and considerations in regard to smoking cessation interventions. In a review of the current smoking cessation literature, the following special populations were identified: women; older adults; gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender smokers; smokers with psychiatric diagnoses; smokers addicted to illicit drugs, alcohol, or both; American Indians and Alaska Natives; African Americans; Hispanics; and Asian America

[Sexuality and quality of life. Results from the quality of life-study of 4,626 Danes aged 31-33 years born at Rigshospitalet 1959-1961].

From a cohort of 7222 31-33-year-olds we obtained answers to a 317-item quality-of-life questionnaire that included five questions on sexuality from 4626 respondents, giving a response rate of 64.1%. Among the women, 1.6% said they were bisexual and 1.4% homosexual; the corresponding figures for men were 1.3% and 1.1% respectively. The quality of life of bisexual persons was somewhat lower than the cohort mean (W: 15.6% lower, M: 19.1% lower), and that of homosexual persons was a little lower than the cohort mean (W: 8.5% lower, M: 3.7% lower). About a quarter of all respondents said they had

HIV transmission and Kaposi's sarcoma among European women.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between the presence of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) as an AIDS-defining illness and HIV transmission categories among European women with AIDS. DESIGN: Comparison of the prevalence of KS as an AIDS-defining illness in different HIV transmission categories. METHODS: Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for KS were computed by means of unconditional multiple logistic regression equations. RESULTS: KS was reported in 344 (2.2%) out of 15,809 women diagnosed with AIDS. Women who reported HIV infection via heterosexual intercourse had a > twofold incr

Prevalence of HIV antibody in high and low risk groups in England. Public Health Laboratory Service Working Group.

Most studies of the spread of HIV infection have centred on homosexuals and intravenous drug users. To estimate the extent of infection in different groups, including heterosexuals, the prevalence of HIV antibody was studied in 34,222 subjects tested with consent between October 1986 and December 1987 in England. These included subjects in high risk groups for HIV infection, heterosexuals with partners in the high risk groups and heterosexuals with multiple partners or with no identifiable risk factors. The prevalence was highest in homosexual or bisexual men in London (15.1%; 213/1412), being

Gender-Affirming Care and Comprehensive Sexuality Education.

Every year, an estimated 246 million children are subject to some form of gender-based violence, including mistreatment, bullying, psychological abuse, and sexual harassment. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, two-spirit, or questioning youth are at a heightened risk of experiencing violence and have unique health, educational, and social needs. Fostering an atmosphere of support and acceptance can help alleviate many of these negative outcomes.

Hidradenitis suppurativa in sexual and gender minorities: A review and considerations for providers.

The literature on hidradenitis suppurativa in sexual and gender minorities remains sparse. This review article aims to discuss critical factors for providers to consider in lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual patients with hidradenitis suppurativa, including associated comorbidities, gender-affirming hormonal therapy, squamous cell carcinoma, infections in HIV-positive patients, and creating a welcoming clinic for sexual and gender minority patients.

Sexual orientation and gender identity: an administrative approach to diversity.

Research indicates that gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (GLBTQ) teens in the care of a northeastern child welfare department do not receive adequate services due to the workers' homophobic attitudes. These teens are at high risk for alcohol and drug abuse, homelessness, prostitution, and suicide. A training module was developed for administrators. Pretest and posttest instruments measured their education and support of GLBTQ issues before and after the training.

Oral histoplasmosis as an indicator of HIV infection.

Histoplasmosis as a serious opportunistic infection in association with AIDS has assumed considerable importance. We have gathered 20 case reports from the literature of oral histoplasmosis in HIV-infected patients. In some cases, oral lesions appear to be the primary or only manifestation of disease. We report one such case of oral histoplasmosis in a bisexual man who was seen with ulcerations on the palate and proved to be infected by HIV.

Is Sexual Racism Still Really Racism? Revisiting Callander et al. (2015) in the USA.

As research on race and racism in the USA has suggested that it now takes a more subtle and neoliberal form, one of the areas in which race and racism are most explicit is in dating and sex. When finding dating and sexual partners, people tend to be explicit about their rejection of potential mates along racial lines while claiming that these preferences have no connection with racism. Callander et al.'s (2015) study was the first to provide the evidence that these expressions of sexual racism, or race-based rejections of partners in sexual contexts, were in fact related to cultural racism per

Acculturation as a Moderator of HIV Risk Behavior Correlates Among Latino Men Who Have Sex with Men.

Acculturation is associated with increased sexual risk behaviors among heterosexual Latinos, but its influence among Latino gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) remains less clear. Elements of acculturation may create distinct lived experiences among sexual minority Latinos, moderating how beneficial and adverse influences contribute to their sexual risk behaviors. Latino MSM living in New York City (n = 412) were recruited using a modified time-space venue- and web-based sampling method. Negative binomial regression models estimated associations between indicators of accul

Mental health of sexual minorities. A systematic review.

Many studies, reviews, and meta-analyses have reported elevated mental health problems for sexual minority (SM) individuals. This systematic review provides an update by including numerous recent studies, and explores whether SM individuals are at increased risk across selected mental health problems as per dimensions of sexual orientation (SO), genders, life-stages, geographic regions, and in higher quality studies. A systematic search in PubMed produced 199 studies appropriate for review. A clear majority of studies reported elevated risks for depression, anxiety, suicide attempts or suicide

Vulnerable populations in Nepal face hostile environment.

Members of sexual and gender minorities in Nepal frequently have been denied their rights, have been excluded from services and have been the victims of violence. In this article, adapted from a presentation at a concurrent session at the conference , Sunil Pant provides examples of these problems and describes how the Blue Diamond Society (BDS), an organization which promotes human rights and which fights against HIV/AIDS for lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgendered persons and men who have sex with men, has responded.

Strategies to Support LGBTQ+ Students in High Schools: What Did We Learn in Chicago Public Schools?

In 2013, the Chicago Public Schools district received funding from the Division of Adolescent and School Health at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to implement a series of strategies aimed to reduce HIV, STIs (sexually transmitted diseases), and related risk behaviors among students. One such set of strategies included "safe and supportive environments" (SSE), aimed to support lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, and other LGBTQ+ students. SSE strategies included professional development and technical assistance provided to K-12 school staff (teachers, adminis

[Affective-sexual, bodily and gender diversity beyond binarism in health sciences education].

Health systems and professional training are based on gender binarism. At different stages of the life cycle, there are situations that cause inequities, lack of opportunities and risks to the health of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex (LGBTI) people. This work aims to explore the need to include affective-sexual, bodily and gender diversity (ASBGD) in the curricula of health sciences degrees. A narrative bibliographic review was performed to identify recommendations based on international frameworks and experiences with new approaches to incorporate ASBGD, as well as a critical anal

Wernicke's encephalopathy in acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS): a case report.

A 40-year-old male, with established AIDS developed cachexia and dementia. At autopsy opportunistic infections were found. An additional neuropathological finding was Wernicke's encephalopathy. Although malnutrition is common in AIDS patients, it seems that Wernicke's encephalopathy is rare in AIDS. Nevertheless, it is suggested that a therapeutic trial with parenteral thiamine may be useful in AIDS patients with amnestic syndrome and dementia.
