We report a case of a brainstem infarction and hemorrhage seen in a 21-year-old female with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) during treating retroperitoneal abscess. SLE has been treated with prednisolone and mizoribine for 4 years. The patient with right back and lower abdominal pain visited our hospital. Computed tomography (CT) revealed retroperitoneal abscess over surrounding right kidney, horizontal part of duodenum and in front of psoas muscle. Drainage was done with indwelled right single J catheter and penrose drain. Retroperitoneal abscess was much smaller, but, post drainage day 17

Clostridium difficile, the most common cause of antibiotic-associated diarrhea, is occasionally isolated from extraintestinal sites and is usually found as part of a polymicrobial flora. We report a case of brain empyema that occurred after the recurrent intestinal carriage of a nontoxigenic strain of C. difficile. Brain abscess cultures contained both toxigenic and nontoxigenic isolates. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis showed that nontoxigenic isolates from the intestine and from the brain were identical.

BACKGROUND: Esophageal dilatation is the most widely used treatment option for the management of esophageal strictures. Complications include bleeding, brain abscess, esophageal perforation and bacteremia. Nasopharyngeal gangrenous abscess after the esophageal dilatation is very rare. Endonasal endoscopic surgery was performed to treat the lesion and a successful result was obtained.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 59-year-old woman with a previous history of dilatation for esophageal stricture was admitted with a low-grade fever, headache, neck pain and cranial nerve abnormalities including sixth nerve …

The patient was 39-year-old male who had been administrated 20 mg of prednisolone for control of chronic eosinophilic pneumonia. He consulted the hospital with fever, headache and gait disturbance. The laboratory data of peripheral blood revealed a smoldering adult T cell leukemia. Computed tomogram of the chest and MRI of the brain revealed a mass in the right middle lobe of the lung and a brain abscess in the left hemisphere respectively. Biopsied specimens from the lung and brain abscess showed an Aspergillus like fungus. In spite of placement of an Ommaya reservoir for administration of AM…

While congenital heart disease is not uncommon, cyanotic congenital heart disease (CCHD) accounts for a minor fraction of them. However, whe … induce focal cerebral ischemia, often in the area supplied by the middle cerebral artery leading to brain abscess. Brain abscesses require craniotomy, which is a major surgery. Two rare clinical manifestations of coenurosis in sheep are reported. (i) A case of partial seizure disorder in a ram of 11 months old. During seizure episodes the animal lay down in lateral recumbency displaying initially a stuporous condition and subsequently began to revolve its head from the base of the cervix. At the necropsy of the case, Coenurus cerebralis cyst (young bladder worm) was found dorsally inside the brainstem, in the site of the tectum mesencephaly. (ii) The second-reported manifestation was a bacterial meningoengephalitis that was witnessed in two lambs of 6-7 weeks old. Th

We c … r study period, there were 42 patients with infective REBLs and 249 with neoplastic REBLs. Pyogenic brain abscesses (PBAs) (20 of 42 [47.6%]) were the most common cause of infective REBLs, followed by tuberculous brain abscesses (TBAs) (9 of 42 [21.4%]) and Nocardia brain abscesses (NBAs) (6 of 42 [14.3%]). Pseudallescheria boydii is a recognized cause of mycetoma, a chronic fungal disease that usually affects the extremities. Isolated case reports have also implicated P. boydii in infections of other sites. We report the first large series (83 isolates) of P. boydii in 46 patients, including the second report of P. boydii brain abscess and disseminated infection in a noncompromised host. Between 1974 and 1984 at our institution, P. boydii was cultured from a variety of sites: respiratory tract, 36; soft tissue, 25; bone, 9; gastric aspirate, 4; maxillary sinus, 2; wound, 2; urine, 2; brain absce…

Nocardia asteroides pneumonia, subcutaneous abscess and meningitis without brain abscesses developed in a patient with advanced non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, who had received corticosteroid therapy and cancer chemotherapy for a long time. At the time of nocardial pneumonia, profound lymphocytopenia and hypogammaglobulinemia was seen. The severely immunosuppressed condition most likely accounted for the uncommon infection, nocardiosis. The organism isolated from the sputum, subcutaneous abscess and cerebrospinal fluid was strongly resistant to cotrimoxazole, which is the recommended standard treatmen…

Parvimonas micra is a gram-positive coccus which is an obligate anaerobe. It is a commensal in the oropharyngeal cavity and the gastrointestinal tract. The genus Parvimonas has only a single species, P. micra. Although there are several reports of infections due to P. micra involving various body sites, cases of brain abscess due to this organism have been under-reported in the literature. Here we present a rare case of cerebellar abscess caused by P. micra in a nine-year-old boy with complex cyanotic heart disease.

This is a case report of patient suffering from multiple central nervous system tuberculoma which progressed to tubercular abscess. Patient developed signs and symptoms of mass effect and compression. Computed tomography of brain and magnetic resonance spectroscopy confirmed the diagnosis. Patient underwent left temporal craniotomy with evacuation of pus. The abscess wall and the pus sent for histopathological and microbiological examination which confirmed the etiological agent - Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Appropriate treatment was started and discharged. Hence, early diagnosis and treatment

In cases of central nervous system infection, it is crucial for the neuroradiologist to provide an accurate differential diagnosis of the possible pathogens involved so that treating physicians can be aided in the choice of empiric therapy. This approach requires the radiologist to be aware of local epidemiology and have knowledge of infectious agents that are endemic to their area of practice. This article reviews and discusses the changing epidemiology of pathogens most often observed in meningitis, brain abscess, epidural abscess, postoperative infections, and human immunodeficiency virus i…

Serious infections can result from wounds that are caused by bites from animals and humans. Organisms recovered from bite wounds generally originate from the oral cavity of the biting animal, as well as from the patient's skin flora. Anaerobes have been isolated from animal and human bite wound infections, especially those associated with abscess formation. In addition to local wound infections, common complications, such as lymphangitis, septic arthritis, tenosynovitis, and osteomyelitis, and uncommon complications, such as endocarditis, meningitis, brain abscess, and sepsis, may occur. Wound…

Brucellosis is an infectious disease with multisystem involvement caused by the genus Brucella. Neurological complications including meningitis, meningoencephalitis, myelitis-radiculoneuritis, brain abscess, epidural abscess, and meningovascular syndromes are rarely encountered. We present here a patient with sixth cranial nerve palsy that occurred during treatment for brucellosis, a form of presentation rarely been reported in English-language literature. We conclude that neurobrucellosis, pseudotumor cerebri, and side effects of tetracyclines which are frequently used in brucellosis should b…

We report a case of nocardiosis in a patient with several risk factors for this rare infection. Radiologically, the patient's multiple lung abscesses were misinterpreted as pulmonary metastases. Diagnosis was finally reached by the growth of Nocardia asteroides in two different blood culture sets. Nocardia bacteraemia is a rare clinical event. Despite initiation of an effective antibiotic therapy, the patient died. Autopsy revealed disseminated nocardial abscesses in the lungs, the kidneys and the brain.
