Afferent influences on brain stem auditory nuclei of the chicken: effects of conductive and sensorineural hearing loss on n. magnocellularis.

Nucleus magnocellularis is the avian homologue of the spherical cell region of the mammalian anteroventral cochlear nucleus. Its primary excitatory synaptic input is from large end bulbs of Held from the eighth nerve ganglion cells. We have examined the effects of three peripheral manipulations--middle ear ossicle (columella) removal (monaural and binaural), columella removal and oval window puncture (monaural), and monaural earplug--on cross-sectional cell area ("cell size") of second-order auditory neurons in n. magnocellularis of the chicken. Manipulations were performed between embryonic d

Morphogenesis and morphology of the brain stem nuclei of Cetacea. II. The nuclei of the accessory, vagal and glossopharyngeal nerves in baleen whales.

The development and final structure of the IXth, Xth and XIth cranial nerve nuclei are studied in ironhematoxylin -, thionin - and protargol -stained serial sections of about 50 baleen whale fetuses (blue whale, Balaenoptera musculus, and fin whale, Balaenoptera physalus ) and one adult fin whale. The nucleus ambiguus is composed of three subdivisions, oral, intermediate and caudal, the last mentioned being contiguous caudally with the dorsal motor Xth nucleus. The oral division develops as three parallel cell columns which merge into a well circumscribed solitary structure with a rostrally ex

Blockade by haloperidol of the increase in tryptophan hydroxylase activity induced by incubation of slices of brain stem with dibutyryl cyclic AMP.

Pretreatment of rat brain stem slices with dibutyryl cyclic AMP, caffeine, theophylline and 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine increased the activity of tryptophan hydroxylase in supernatant preparations of enzyme made from the slices. This effect does not appear to be mediated by a cyclic AMP sensitive mechanism since it was not reproduced by exposure of the slices to 8-bromo cyclic AMP, to papaverine, a nonxanthine phosphodiesterase inhibitor, or to other treatments known to raise tissue cyclic AMP levels. The ability of haloperidol to block this increase in enzyme activity is consistent with a rol…

Treatment-related neuroanatomical and functional consequences of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation: A comprehensive review of brain structure and function.

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a foundational treatment for hematological disorders. While its efficacy is established, the conditioning regimens required for HSCT (high-dose chemotherapy and radiotherapy), along with transplant-related immunological and metabolic changes, can induce significant neurological complications. These treatment-related effects necessitate a comprehensive evaluation of their impact on brain structure and function. A synthesis of current evidence on these neurological outcomes is essential to guide clinical practice and future research. This review

The influence of mesenchymal stem cells on the severity of hypoxic-ischemic brain damage in neonatal rats via serum cytokines.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal hypoxic-ischemic brain damage (Hypoxic‑Ischemic Brain Damage, HIBD) is a severe neurological disorder caused by perinatal asphyxia. Its severe long-term sequelae impose a heavy burden on families and society. Therefore, effective early diagnosis and intervention for HIBD are crucial for improving prognosis. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the correlation between serum levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-18 (IL-18), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and the severity of hypoxic-ischemic brain damage (HIBD) in neonatal SD rats, as well as the effects of mesenchymal stem

Testing the hypothesis of neurodegeneracy in respiratory network function with a priori transected arterially perfused brain stem preparation of rat.

Degeneracy of respiratory network function would imply that anatomically discrete aspects of the brain stem are capable of producing respiratory rhythm. To test this theory we a priori transected brain stem preparations before reperfusion and reoxygenation at 4 rostrocaudal levels: 1.5 mm caudal to obex (n = 5), at obex (n = 5), and 1.5 (n = 7) and 3 mm (n = 6) rostral to obex. The respiratory activity of these preparations was assessed via recordings of phrenic and vagal nerves and lumbar spinal expiratory motor output. Preparations with a priori transection at level of the caudal brain stem …

A case report of racemose pattern of intracranial tuberculoma with brain stem and hypophyseal involvement developing paradoxically during treatment.

Tuberculosis involving the central nervous system, a source of considerable morbidity and mortality, forms 5-10% of the disease burden associated with tuberculosis. Central nervous system tuberculosis may present as meningitis, tuberculoma, abscesses, cerebritis or miliary tuberculosis. The most common site of tuberculoma has been reported to be at the grey-white matter junction and the periventricular region. They may even be found in the epidural, subdural and subarachnoid spaces, and the brain stem, with the rarer sites of involvement being the cavernous sinus, sella turcica, hypophysis, hy…

Assessment of long-term safety and efficacy of intranasal mesenchymal stem cell treatment for neonatal brain injury in the mouse.

BACKGROUND: For clinical translation, we assessed whether intranasal mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) treatment after hypoxia-ischemia (HI) induces neoplasia in the brain or periphery at 14 mo. Furthermore, the long-term effects of MSCs on behavior and lesion size were determined. METHOD: HI was induced in 9-d-old mice. Pups received an intranasal administration of 0.5 × 10(6) MSCs or vehicle at 10 d post-HI. Full macroscopical and microscopical pathological analysis of 39 organs per mouse was performed. Sensorimotor behavior was assessed in the cylinder-rearing test at 10 d, 28 d, 6 mo, and 9 mo.

NF-κB is involved in brain repair by stem cell factor and granulocyte-colony stimulating factor in chronic stroke.

Chronic stroke is the phase of brain recovery and repair generally beginning 3 months after stroke onset. No pharmaceutical approach is currently available to enhance brain repair in chronic stroke. We have previously determined the therapeutic effects of stem cell factor (SCF) and granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) alone or in combination (SCF+G-CSF) in an animal model of chronic stroke and demonstrated that only SCF+G-CSF induces long-term functional recovery. However, the mechanism underlying the SCF+G-CSF-induced brain repair in chronic stroke remains largely elusive. In the pre

Restoration of intracortical and thalamocortical circuits after transplantation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells into the ischemic brain of mice.

Transplantation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) provides a promising regenerative medicine for stroke. Whether BMSC therapy could repair ischemia-damaged neuronal circuits and recover electrophysiological activity has largely been unknown. To address this issue, BMSCs were implanted into the ischemic barrel cortex of adult mice 1 and 7 days after focal barrel cortex stroke. Two days after the first transplantation (3 days after stroke), the infarct volume determined by TTC staining was significantly smaller in BMSC-treated compared to vehicle-treated stroke mice. The behavioral c
