The term tracheobronchomalacia refers to excessively compliant and collapsible central airways leading to symptoms. Although seen as a coexisting condition with various other pulmonary condition, it may cause symptoms by itself. The condition is often misdiagnosed as asthma, bronchitis or just chronic cough due to a lack of specific pathognomonic history and clinical findings. The investigation revolves around different modes of imaging, lung function testing and usually confirmed by flexible bronchoscopy. The treatment widely varies based on the cause, with most cases treated conservatively w…

CONTEXT: Asthma has been defined as a chronic inflammatory disorder of the airways that is associated with recruitment of inflammatory cells and the clinical development of wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and cough. Asthma is a major public health issue. It affects 5% of the United States population and accounts for 2 million emergency department visits, 470,000 hospitalizations, and 4500 deaths annually.
OBJECTIVE: To review the pathophysiology and characteristic pathologic patterns of this disease and discuss the possible mechanisms of production of the lesions.

PURPOSE: The perioperative management of lower airway injuries is a difficult clinical problem. Since few reviews present the management of this injury from an anaesthetic perspective, we undertook a literature review of this topic.
SOURCES: A computerized search of the National Library of Medicine database using tracheal or bronchial injury as key words produced 140 English language citations. An eight-year chart review outlining our experience in an urban Canadian setting is also presented.
FINDINGS: The most frequent findings in patients with injury to the lower airway are dyspnoea and su…

Irritant-induced asthma and RADS are related conditions that need further study focusing on the following questions: (1) Are there differences between the pathologic and functional features that follow single or multiple exposures to an irritant material? (2) What is the time course of the changes? (3) What are the physiologic correlates in terms of onset of airway hyperresponsiveness? (4) What are the risk markers (besides exposure)? (5) Are there means of modulating the reaction by using anti-inflammatory preparations? Developing an animal model of irritant-induced asthma and conducting pros

Eighty attempts at placing suction catheters in the left main bronchus were analysed by studying chest radiographs. When angled catheters were used via a tracheostomy tube the success rate was 75%; the rate fell to 15% when straight tubes were used through an orotracheal tube. Assessment and control of the tube length was found to be important to avoid kinking and subsequent obstruction of the catheters.
