BACKGROUND: Continuous application of "combination antiretroviral therapy" (cART) has transformed Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection into a manageable chronic disease; however, due to lasting inflammation and cumulative toxicity, progressive pathophysiological changes do occur and potentially lead to accelerated aging, among others, contributing to telomere shortening. The single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) rs2736100 and rs2736098 are particularly important for human telomerase (TERT) gene expression. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of clinical parameters a

BACKGROUND: Genus Desulfovibrio species is a sulphate-reducing anaerobic gram-negative rod that resides in the human oral cavity and intestinal tract. It was reported as the causative pathogen of bacteraemia and abdominal infections, but not renal cyst infection, and Desulfovibrio fairfieldensis has higher pathogenicity than other Desulfovibrio species.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 63-year-old man was on haemodialysis for end-stage renal failure due to autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease. On admission, he had a persistent high-grade fever, right lumbar back pain, and elevated C-reactive prot

OBJECTIVES: We determined the associations of ecosocial factors and psychosocial factors with having a prevalent sexually transmitted infection (STI), recent STI diagnoses, and sexual risk behaviors.
METHODS: Young adults aged 18 to 27 years in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (n=14322) provided ecosocial, psychosocial, behavioral, and STI-history data. Urine was tested for Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae by ligase chain reaction and for Trichomonas vaginalis, human papillomavirus, and Mycoplasma genitalium by polymerase chain reaction.
RESULTS: Prevalent

BACKGROUND: Dengue viruses (DENV) are endemic in over 100 countries worldwide, and annually 50 to 100 million people are infected by one of the four DENV serotypes, whereas over 2.5 billion people are at risk for infection. West African countries lack the surveillance to determine the true incidence of dengue; hence, this disease is likely significantly underestimated. In Mali, ?14 million people are potentially at risk of acquiring a dengue infection.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: A serosurvey for DENV was conducted on 95 human serum samples obtained from the Institute National de Recherche en Sante

Autoreactive T cells may contribute to post-viral myocarditis induced with Coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3), but the underlying mechanisms of their generation are unclear. Here, we have comprehensively analyzed the generation of antigen-specific, autoreactive T cells in the mouse model of CVB3 infection for antigens implicated in patients with myocarditis/dilated cardiomyopathy. First, comparative analysis of CVB3 proteome with five autoantigens led us to identify three mimicry epitopes, one each from adenine nucleotide translocator 1 (ANT), sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ ATPase 2a (SERCA2a)

BACKGROUND: Female genital schistosomiasis (FGS) occurs when Schistosoma haematobium eggs are deposited in reproductive tissue. Female genital schistosomiasis in the cervical mucosa is associated with increased vascularity. If FGS is associated with the presence of hemoglobin in cervicovaginal lavage (CVL), the use of urinary reagent strips to detect hemoglobin in CVL could supplement FGS diagnosis.
METHODS: Nonmenstruating, nonpregnant, sexually active women aged 18-31 participating in the HPTN 071 (PopART) Population-Cohort were invited in 2 Zambian communities. Genital self-swabs and a uri

Trichomonas vaginalis is the causative agent for the most prevalent non-viral sexually transmitted infection (STI) among women of child-bearing age. In Ghana, although the infection is prevalent, there is a dearth of data on the risk factors and symptoms associated with T. vaginalis infection. This study was conducted on 492 women visiting gynaecological and STI clinics in the Volta Region (VR) and Greater Accra Region (GAR) in southern Ghana. Wet mount microscopy and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were used to diagnose T. vaginalis infection. Infection prevalence was 13.2% and 18.1% by WMM a

The schistosome Heterobilharzia americana infects several mammalian species in the southeastern United States, including horses, but infections have not been reported in camelids. This is a report of H. americana infection in a 6-year-old llama with extensive cardiac pathology and congestive heart failure. Parasite-induced granulomas were widely disseminated and included overwhelming involvement of the lungs and liver. Microscopic lesions in the heart included myofiber degeneration and necrosis, with extensive replacement fibrosis. Polymerase chain reaction amplification and sequencing confirm

There is a case report of an intrauterine growth retarded infant who was suffering of sepsis caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae. An exchange transfusion was carried out because of hyperbilirubinaemia on the 5th day of life. 10 days later high bilirubin concentration was observed again parallel to the liver enzyme abnormalities. HCV-related antibodies were detectable in the sera of the newborn and his mother as well. The results of analysis of HCV RNA with the polymerase chain reaction in the infant and his mother suggest vertical transmission of HCV infection. This is the first case of HCV infect

Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD) is a rare, non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis characterized by the infiltration of foamy histiocytes into multiple organs. We herein report a case of ECD with central nervous system (CNS) involvement in a 63-year-old man who also presented a positive result for Toxoplasma gondii nested polymerase chain reaction testing of cerebrospinal fluid. Since anti-Toxoplasma treatment proved completely ineffective, we presumed latent infection of the CNS with T. gondii. This case suggests the difficulty of distinguishing ECD with CNS involvement from toxoplasmic encephalitis

Leukemoid reaction, defined as a total leukocyte count of >50,000/mm, is most commonly related to antenatal administration of steroids, infections, and transient myeloproliferative disorder of Down syndrome in newborns. Atypical presentations of viral infections can be a diagnostic challenge in the newborn period. Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection causes a multisystem disease, and symptomatic infants generally present with intrauterine growth restriction, hepatosplenomegaly, cholestasis, rash, thrombocytopenia, and microcephaly. We present a case of a preterm infant with severe myeloid leukemoid

Human babesiosis is an emerging intraerythrocytic infection caused by protozoal parasites transmitted by ixodid ticks. Babesiosis is endemic in the northeastern and upper midwestern regions of the United States and is found sporadically in other parts of the United States, Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America. Babesial infections range from asymptomatic to severe and occasionally are fatal. Specific laboratory diagnosis of babesial infection is made by morphologic examination of Giemsa-stained blood smears, serology, and amplification of babesial DNA using polymerase chain reaction. A 30-year-old-man presented with an aortic graft infection. Polymerase chain reaction study identified the infectious organism as Coxiella burnetii, a strictly intracellular pathogen that causes Q fever in humans. The patient was successfully treated by removal of the infected graft, implantation of homograft aortic tube, and specific antibiotic therapy. He is doing well after 6 months, with no evidence of recurrent homograft infection on transthoracic echocardiography. C. burnetii vascular graft infections may be underdiagnosed because of lack of recognition. We suggest that serologic tests f

A 35-year-old man with fever and diarrhea visited our hospital because of white string-like fecal excretion. Based on a morphological examination of the excreted object, a Diphyllobothrium infection was suspected. Additionally, Gram staining of a fecal sample revealed Campylobacter infection. After the intraduodenal administration of meglumine/diatrizoate sodium, the tapeworm was excreted. A polymerase chain reaction-based DNA sequence analysis demonstrated that the tapeworm excreted in this case was Diphyllobothrium nihonkaiensis. This report presents a rare case of coinfection with Diphyllob

A new outbreak of hepatitis of unknown origin raised awareness in the international community. A few reports have attempted to associate new cases with adenovirus infection and the immunologic effects of previous SARS-CoV-2 infections through a superantigen mechanism. Moreover, according to a case series, viral isolates were identified in 7 of 10 cases of pediatric patients with hepatitis of unknown origin and acute liver failure. Adenovirus was detected by respiratory secretion polymerase chain reaction in 2 patients, with neither presenting with SARS-CoV-2 acute infection. Clinical and labor

Mycotic meningoencephalitis in dogs may manifest as a primary disease of the central nervous system or as a part of disseminated infection. Fungi belonging to the genus Bipolaris are saprophytic plant pathogens and can cause disease in humans. The authors report a case of Bipolaris infection in a dog with granulomatous meningoencephalitis, nephritis, and vasculitis. The clinical and histological features resembled those of the more common aspergillosis, thus warranting confirmation by molecular methods. Polymerase chain reaction and sequence analysis identified Bipolaris from the brain lesion,

This study described the diagnosis of a mixed infection of Brugia malayi and Brugia pahangi in a single domestic cat using the internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1) region. Following polymerase chain reaction amplification of the ITS1 region, the 580 bp amplicon was cloned, and 29 white colonies were randomly selected for DNA sequencing and phylogenetic tree construction. A DNA parsimony tree generated two groups of Brugia spp with one group containing 6 clones corresponding to B. pahangi and the other 23 clones corresponding to B. malayi. This indicated that mixed infection of the two Brugia s

Brucellosis, an "anthropophitic" disease of worldwide distribution can involve several organs and tissues but the osteoarticular disease is the most common complication. It can occur as sacroiliitis, bursitis, tenosynovitis or osteomyelitis. Prosthetic joint infection is a serious complication of total joint arthroplasty, with coagulase negative staphylococci and Staphylococcus aureus accounting for 50% of cases. Treatment of prosthetic infections remains complex. Prosthetic infections caused by Brucella spp are rarely described in the literature. We report a patient with a prosthetic joint in
