Protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) is a rare gastro-intestinal complication characterised by intestinal loss of proteins with consequent hypoproteinaemia and generalised oedema. Rotavirus infection associated with PLE in children has rarely been reported. A 6-month-old girl presented with diarrhoea, fever and generalised oedema. UNLABELLED: DM64 is a glycosylated protein with antivenom activity isolated from the serum of the opossum Didelphis aurita. It binds non-covalently to myotoxins I (Asp49) and II (Lys49) from Bothrops asper venom and inhibits their myotoxic effect. Anti-GM1 antibodies of the IgG isotype are found in serum from patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome. In normal human sera, anti-GM1 IgM-antibodies are commonly present, but their IgG counterpart has not been previously demonstrated. A lectin from the red marine alga Ptilota filicina (PFL) was isolated by affinity chromatography on cross-linked guar gum. PFL agglutinated native and papain-treated human erythrocytes with preference for type O erythrocytes. The lectin was inhibited by galactose and its derivatives. The cardiac muscle proteins, myosin and actin, were purified in one step using a salicylate-silica affinity column. The affinity columns were prepared by coupling sodium salicylate via its hydroxyl group to an Altex Ultraffinity-EP column. A non-hemophilic patient with an acquired inhibitor to factor VIIIC was initially diagnosed in this laboratory 20 years ago at age 63.
