Hybridization is increasingly recognized as an important evolutionary process that can reshape genomes and generate novel lineages. One striking outcome is the origin of obligately parthenogenetic populations, often through interspecific hybridization. Here, we use genome-wide data and coalescent models to reconstruct the evolutionary history of Liolaemus parthenos, the only known parthenogenetic pleurodont lizard. We sampled the darwinii complex (L. darwinii, L. grosseorum, L. laurenti, and L. parthenos) and L. josei from the donosobarrosi group, selected as a candidate paternal lineage based

Rice paddies are among the largest anthropogenic sources of methane (CH4), yet substantial uncertainties persist in the long-term magnitude and spatiotemporal dynamics of the emissions. Here, we show a spatially explicit global estimate of rice CH4 emissions from 1961 to 2020, leveraging a new high-resolution dataset and two Tier 3 modeling approaches (process-based and machine-learning-based). We find that global emissions have more than tripled over the past six decades, reaching a record high of 38.8 Tg CH4 yr-1 in 2020 based on the mean of the two Tier 3 estimates, with both the rate and m

Coral reefs face significant threats due to climate change and human activities, which require innovative approaches to study and protect these ecosystems. Successful settlement is the bottleneck linking a reef's free-swimming larvae to the benthic community, ultimately determining the next generation of corals and the long-term resilience of the entire ecosystem. This work introduces an agent-based model (ABM) driven by neuroevolution (NE) to simulate coral larval settlement behavior under various environmental conditions. Inspired by biological processes, the model combines sensory input wit

The Svalbard Archipelago has undergone rapid warming in recent decades, increasing the frequency and intensity of Rain-on-Snow (ROS) events. While the physical and ecological consequences of ROS in the Arctic have been extensively documented, their role in modulating the atmospheric fate of emerging contaminants remains poorly understood. This study investigates the chemical signature of four ROS events during the 2023-24 field campaign in Ny-Ålesund (Kongsfjorden, Svalbard, Norway), focusing on the behaviour of emerging pollutants across pre-, during-, and post-event phases. By combining aero

Deposition in the oil, gas, and petrochemical industries occurs mainly due to the passage of water, organic deposits, and corrosion products in hydrocarbon pipelines. The composition of deposits in oil and gas pipelines differs at different points and routes. Especially, deposition in long-distance transmission lines is often due to mineral and organic deposits. Variable environmental conditions such as the mixed fluid types in pipelines, pressure, temperature, pH, hydrocarbon type, and pipe material can accelerate the deposition process. Consequently, these variations reduce effective pipe di

Anthropogenic methane emissions from landfill sites and coal mines with low local concentrations (<5000 ppm) are a critical factor in climate change, and the conversion of such low concentrations of methane has been widely regarded as a thorny issue in catalysis while being pivotal for a sustainable society. Conventional catalytic methane combustion requires high temperatures (>400 °C) and is particularly inefficient at rather low concentrations (<1000 ppm). Herein, Pt/CeO2 {111} nanocrystals assisted by photon-phonon codriven catalysis overcome these challenges. Ultrafast transient absorption

The enrichment of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and pathogenic microorganisms on microplastics may pose potential risks to public health. In the context of ongoing global warming, however, the mechanisms governing the occurrence and dissemination of ARGs within the riverine plastisphere remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the effects of temperature on the plastisphere resistome by cultivating biofilms on PVC (φ = 3 mm) surfaces in river water at 5, 15, 25, and 35 °C. Our results demonstrate that temperature drives shifts in microbial community structure and thereby in

Anthropogenic nutrient pollution drives coastal eutrophication, but distinguishing physical transport from internal biogeochemical processing along the land-sea continuum challenges linear models. We compared two hydrologically contrasting bays in Fujian Province that share a monsoon climate and intensive aquaculture but differ fundamentally in freshwater input: river-dominated Sansha Bay and marine-dominated Zhao'an Bay. An explainable AI (XAI) framework integrating Random Forest, SHAP, and partial dependence plots (PDP) decoupled the drivers of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), improving c

Adequate nutrition is an essential requirement for health, growth, prevention of nutritional diseases and normal physiological functions throughout life. Although there has been significant progress in agriculture, food systems, nutrition science, food insecurity and dietary insufficiency continue to be a significant public health challenge globally. This might be due to factors including limited dietary diversity, socioeconomic inequalities, infectious diseases, climate change and poor governance. This chapter thoroughly explains the concept of nutritional adequacy, its definition, evolution

Photosynthetic thermal tolerance is commonly quantified by heating leaves in darkness, although extreme leaf temperatures in natural canopies occur under irradiance. If light modifies physiological responses to heat stress, dark-based assays may misrepresent thermal vulnerability, yet the magnitude and predictability of light effects remain poorly resolved across species. Here, I examined how sub-saturating light alters photosynthetic thermal tolerance across 36 tropical plant species by characterizing full temperature response curves of PSII efficiency (Fv/Fm). Light exposure reshaped thermal

The observed supersaturation of methane (CH4) in open-ocean surface waters implies widespread CH4 production within the well-oxygenated mixed layer, driving emissions of this potent greenhouse gas to the atmosphere. The dominant CH4 production pathway that explains this phenomenon remains poorly understood, although candidates include production during photosynthesis, zooplankton metabolism, and dissolved organic matter cycling. Here, we construct a data-assimilating model of the open-ocean CH4 cycle to test which hypothesized mechanism is most consistent with the observed global CH4 distribut

Alloy-conversion anodes are promising candidates for high-capacity sodium storage, yet their practical application is hindered by sluggish reaction kinetics, severe volume fluctuation, and unstable interfacial chemistry. Herein, a bimetallic BiSb sulfide with carbon confined (BiSbS3@C) nanorod is rationally constructed to regulate both bulk structural evolution and interfacial charge transport. The integrated carbon framework provides continuous electronic pathways and mechanical confinement, while the dual-metal synergy tailors volume strains and facilitates reversible conversion-alloying pro

Climate change, particularly increasing frequency and intensity of spring frost events, poses a serious threat to viticulture by reducing yield and product quality. This study proposes an image processing and machine learning-based framework for early, rapid, and accurate segmentation of frost damage in vineyards using YOLOv11s enhanced with Atrous Spatial Pyramid Pooling (ASPP). A unique dataset called FGVL dataset from Sultana seedless grape vineyards in Manisa, Türkiye, following a severe frost event in April 2025. FGVL includes 418 frost-damaged grapes, 510 frost-damaged leaves, 395 health

Climate change is causing a rise in global temperatures. High summertime temperatures can lead to overheating, where the temperature in homes becomes a risk to health and comfort. To reduce overheating in new residential buildings, a new part of the English Building Regulations, Part O: Overheating ('Part O') was introduced in 2022. This study evaluates the application of this new regulation to real-world projects. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with 30 experts across the construction and policy sectors. Experts identified that Part O has barriers to its application, including con

Escalating climate-induced drought events are increasingly pushing terrestrial plants toward their physiological limits, challenging their growth and ecological acclimation. Metabolic reprogramming represents a critical adaptive strategy under water deficit, in which aspartate aminotransferase (AspAT) serves as a key node by modulating carbon-nitrogen flux, energy metabolism, and amino acid biosynthesis. Although AspAT genes have been implicated in abiotic stress responses in herbaceous species, their roles in woody plants remain poorly characterized. Here, we identified multiple drought-respo

Global warming poses a critical threat to wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) production, particularly during sensitive reproductive stages. This review synthesizes current understanding of how heat stress affects wheat and the adaptive mechanisms that confer tolerance, with emphasis on recent advances in genomics and biotechnology. Heat stress impairs morphological, physiological, biochemical, and molecular processes, reducing photosynthetic efficiency, accelerating senescence, disrupting assimilate partitioning, and damaging cellular structures. Adaptive responses include optimized water relations,

The effective management of CO2 emissions is crucial for industrial decarbonisation and environmental sustainability. Chemical absorption remains a key technology for CO2 capture, but improving its efficiency is essential to reduce energy consumption and operational costs. This study explores the application of a Heat Integrated Stripper (HIS) as an advanced pollution control method, enhancing the sustainability of amine-based CO2 capture using an AMP/Pz (30/10 %) solvent. Pilot-scale tests, conducted at a power plant with a flue gas flow rate of 200 m3/h, demonstrated a 6 % reduction in reboi
