INTRODUCTION: Knee ligament injuries associated with tibia shaft fractures are usually neglected and treatment is delayed. To our knowledge, no case presentation discusses the clinical result of closed tibial shaft fracture with concomitant ipsilateral isolated PCL injury. In this literature, we report the clinical result of two cases that sustained closed tibial shaft fracture with concomitant PCL injury and discuss the treatment options.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We report the clinical result of two cases that sustained closed tibial shaft fracture with concomitant posterior cruciate ligament

CASE: Two patients with delayed presentations of neck pain and fixed kyphotic deformity after trauma were found to have atlantoaxial spondyloptosis (AAS) with type II dens fractures. Owing to the rarity of AAS, outcomes and optimal treatment are not well understood. In both cases, closed reduction was achieved with a dynamic overhead traction setup, followed by posterior surgical stabilization with C1-2 screw fixation.
CONCLUSION: Closed reduction remains a challenge because of the marked deformity of interlocking C1-C2 joints. However, patients with chronic fixed atlantoaxial dislocation due

BACKGROUND: Fractures of the clavicle are common injuries, which often require reduction and internal fixation. Although Kirschner pins have been commonly used to treat these fractures with good results, migration of these devices may result in severe internal lesions.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report herein the case of 61-year-old man, who presented for intrapulmonary migration of a Kirschner pin, 25 years after closed reduction and fixation of a clavicle fracture.
CONCLUSION: Migration of an osteosynthesis pin can be lethal. Patients with osteosynthesis pins, should have a regular follow, unti

We report the case of a 31-year-old male who presented with traumatic dislocation of both proximal and distal tibiofibular joints without fibular fracture. The patient underwent closed reduction of the proximal tibiofibular joint and surgical stabilization of the distal tibiofibular joint. An 18-month postoperative evaluation confirmed a very good clinical outcome after anatomic reduction. This type of trauma is very rare and, to our knowledge, has only been described 3 times previously. Furthermore, our surgical management was different from that used for the previous cases and proved to be s

Two cases of irreducible trans-scaphoid perilunate dislocation are described. In each case there was soft tissue interposition between the proximal and distal elements of the fracture-dislocation and this prevented capitolunate and scaphoid reduction. The dorsal capsule was impaled on the distal scaphoid fragment in one case, and a flap of dorsal capsule was entrapped between the capitate and the lunate in the other. In light of these findings, we recommend a dorsal approach for open reduction of trans-scaphoid perilunate dislocation when the capitolunate joint cannot be reduced by closed mani

INTRODUCTION: Although exploded hand syndrome is well described in the literature, only a few cases have been reported. A sudden compressive force to the hand leads to extrusion of the intrinsic muscles through burst lacerations in the skin. This case report has been reported in line with the SCARE checklist.
CASE REPORT: A 45-year-old male industrial worker sustained a crush injury to his right hand when a compressor plate hit the hand at the factory. Besides extrusion of the intrinsic muscles and multiple metacarpal fractures, two unique features were seen: fractures of the phalangeal necks

BACKGROUND: Pediatric both-bone diaphyseal forearm fractures are commonly treated in a variety of clinical settings. Most often, closed reduction followed by immobilization leads to satisfactory results. However, in the adolescent population (10-16 years of age), forearm fractures are more challenging due to less remodeling potential. The purpose of this review was to provide an overview of the anatomy, biomechanics, and treatment options relevant to adolescent patients.
METHODS: A systematic review of peer-reviewed publications and abstracts related to the treatment for pediatric both-bone d

INTRODUCTION: Intramedullary fixation of intertrochanteric fractures has become the standard method of fixation especially in unstable fracture types. Even though there have been developments on implant design and technology, the surgical technique of reduction and implant positioning remains the mandatory factor in treating these fractures successfully. The advantages of nailing in the mainly elderly patients sustaining intertrochanteric femur fractures are a short lever arm and a lateral support in the trochanter supplied by the nail. The disadvantages are that it is often harder to achieve

Avulsion fractures of the tibial tuberosity occur mainly during sport activities and are closely related to the strains exerted on the anterior tibial tuberosity by the extension complex of the thigh. A knowledge of the mechanical aspects of these avulsions may improve understanding of the mechanisms of such injuries. In such avulsion fractures, tensile forces due to the contraction of the quadriceps complex overcome the cohesive forces within the apophyseal cartilage. A 1-month cast immobilisation on an extended knee gives good results in the management of nondisplaced fractures. In minor dis

UNLABELLED: Pediatric hand fractures are common and approximately 10% require surgery.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study reports on hand fractures in a large pediatric population and identifies the characteristics and patterns of fractures that required surgical correction. A χ2 analysis was done to evaluate the association between individual fracture variables and surgery. The STROBE checklist was applied.
RESULTS: One thousand one-hundred seventy-three hand fractures were reviewed. Peak age was 16 years for boys and 14 years for girls. Most fractures were closed (96.0%) and nonrotat

Dislocated combined injuries of the upper cervical spine such as C 1/2 fractures require occipitocervical fusion, especially if the dislocation can not be redressed using halo vest immobilisition. We report on the clinical course and outcome of a young woman who sustained complex cervical spine injuries. Closed reduction and a percutaneous transfixation of C 1/2 with k-wires (Magerl) and an additional halo vest immobilisition was performed to avoid permanent fusion. The 25 year old patient was involved in a motor vehicle accident that resulted in a dislocated Jefferson's fracture, an odontoid

One hundred seven pilon fractures in 107 patients were treated according to a staged prospective protocol. All pilon fractures were stabilized immediately by the application of calcaneal traction. Open fractures or fractures in patients with multiple injuries were stabilized with traveling traction that was applied in the operating room. A distraction computed tomography scan was obtained before definitive treatment. Treatment groups were based on the degree of soft tissue compromise. Forty-one patients with Tscherne Grade 0 or Grade I injuries underwent open reduction and internal fixation (o

In the present technique report, we describe a useful noninvasive traction technique that uses a 6-inch elastic bandage that can be obtained in every operating room and can be easily applied around the patient's ankle and the surgeon's waist to offer a stable traction force during minimally invasive plate fixation of distal tibial fractures. This technique frees the surgeon's hands to focus on applying other forces, such as rotational, varus, or valgus forces, to reduce the fracture and stabilize the reduction and alignment during percutaneous insertion and fixation of the plate. This techniqu

Tibial pilon fractures are severe injuries to the distal articular surface of the tibia. Such injuries frequently result from high-energy axial impact and are often associated with extended soft tissue injury. Various treatment methods are available, depending not only on the fracture type but mostly on the extent of the soft tissue injury; one of the most frequent procedures is a two-stage surgery: the initial closed reduction of the fracture via primary placement of an ankle joint-spanning external fixator, if possible in conjunction with open reduction and internal fixation of the fractured

Twenty-one elbow dislocations with an associated radial head fracture were treated with immediate joint reduction, stabilization, and early range-of-motion exercises. In all cases initial treatment involved closed reduction of the ulnohumeral joint. For those cases involving minimally displaced and a few moderately displaced radial head fractures, treatment consisted of benign neglect (4 of 21). Of the more severely displaced fractures (17 of 21), 9 were treated with open-reduction internal fixation and 8 with immediate silicone head replacement. Despite radial head treatment, 6 of these cases

This is an analysis of 52 fractures of the posterior wall of the acetabulum treated operatively and reviewed 2-15 years after injury. In 48 cases the fracture was associated with posterior dislocation of the hip, which was treated by closed reduction soon after the injury. In all but two of the cases there was a displaced single or comminuted fragment resulting in a large defect in the posterior acetabular wall; they were treated by open reduction and internal fixation to restore joint congruity and stability. In the remaining two cases, the fragment was small but trapped in the joint and was
