Uncovering Infant Group B Streptococcal (GBS) Disease Clusters in the United Kingdom and Ireland Through Genomic Analysis: A Population-based Epidemiological Study.

BACKGROUND: The true frequency of hospital outbreaks of invasive group B streptococcal (iGBS; Streptococcus agalactiae) disease in infants is unknown. We used whole genome sequencing (WGS) of iGBS isolates collected during a period of enhanced surveillance of infant iGBS disease in the UK and Ireland to determine the number of clustered cases. METHODS: Potentially linked iGBS cases from infants with early (<7 days of life) or late-onset (7-89 days) disease were identified from WGS data (HiSeq 2500 platform, Illumina) from clinical sterile site isolates collected between 04/2014 and 04/2015. Patients who failed to conceive following an in vitro fertilization cycle can be clustered into different failure causes using gene expression hierarchical analysis†.

The patient's response to an IVF stimulation protocol is highly variable and thus difficult to predict. When a cycle fails, there are often no apparent or obvious reasons to explain the failure. Having clues on what went wrong during stimulation could serve as a basis to improve and personalize the next protocol. This exploratory study aimed to investigate if it is possible to distinguish different failure causes or different follicular responses in a population of nonpregnant IVF patients. Using qRT-PCR, we analyzed a panel of genes indicative of different failure causes in patients who did n

Clustering of malignant pleural mesothelioma in asbestos factories: a subgroup analysis in a 29-year follow-up study to identify high-risk industries in Taiwan.

OBJECTIVE: Exposure to asbestos is the major cause for malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM), but the causal link of individual cases is difficult to establish for lack of exposure information and long disease latency. METHODS: We established a retrospective cohort of workers employed in asbestos industries during the period of 1950-1989 and the occurrence of MPM during the period of 1980-2009 was examined with the Taiwan Cancer Registry. Estimated rate ratios (eRRs) were computed for each factory where any case of MPM was diagnosed by assuming Poisson distribution with a minimal latency of 20

Analysis of HIV-1 pol sequences from Panama: identification of phylogenetic clusters within subtype B and detection of antiretroviral drug resistance mutations.

We report the first study to examine phylogenetic relationships and drug resistance mutations in HIV-1 pol sequences from Panama. For this study, we used plasma RNA samples from 135 HIV-1-infected subjects from Panama, of which 82 (61%) had AIDS and 53 (39%) were asymptomatic drug-naïve individuals. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that 133 (98%) subjects were infected with subtype B viruses and 2 AIDS patients harboured recombinant viruses, CRF02_AG/A3 and CRF12_BF/B, respectively. Using a Bayesian phylogeny inference method, 5 strongly supported clusters of > or =5 sequences, designated B-PA1

Epidemiology of enterovirus types causing neurological disease in Austria 1999-2007: detection of clusters of echovirus 30 and enterovirus 71 and analysis of prevalent genotypes.

Between 1999 and 2007 1,388 stool specimens from patients with acute flaccid paralysis or aseptic meningitis were submitted to the Austrian reference laboratory for poliomyelitis. Samples (201) yielded non-poliovirus enterovirus in culture. One hundred eighty-one viruses were available for typing and 78 isolates which remained serologically untyped were further analyzed by CODEHOP-PCR and sequencing of the VP1 gene and the 5'-untranslated region (5'-UTR). Typing revealed an Echovirus 30 outbreak in northwestern Austria in 2000, which was in accordance with the situation in Europe, and no drama

Analysis of the neurotoxin complex genes in Clostridium botulinum A1-A4 and B1 strains: BoNT/A3, /Ba4 and /B1 clusters are located within plasmids.

BACKGROUND: Clostridium botulinum and related clostridial species express extremely potent neurotoxins known as botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs) that cause long-lasting, potentially fatal intoxications in humans and other mammals. The amino acid variation within the BoNT is used to categorize the species into seven immunologically distinct BoNT serotypes (A-G) which are further divided into subtypes. The BoNTs are located within two generally conserved gene arrangements known as botulinum progenitor complexes which encode toxin-associated proteins involved in toxin stability and expression. METH

Long-term refined genomic analysis of tuberculosis clusters to distinguish between ongoing transmission, reactivations or diagnostic delays, Almería, Spain, 2003 to 2024.

BACKGROUNDIn tuberculosis (TB) surveillance, genomics is mainly used to identify TB patient clusters; growing clusters are commonly attributed to ongoing transmission events.AIMThis study's objective was to explore other factors, in addition to ongoing transmission, contributing to cluster expansion.METHODSThe study population included all 1,886 culture-positive TB cases diagnosed within the whole Almería province population, Spain, between January 2003 and June 2024. Cases' Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains were whole genome sequenced enabling detection of clusters (with pairwise distance be

Altered Periaqueductal Gray Functional Connectivity in Overactive Bladder Patients: A Resting-State Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study Using Clustering Analysis.

PURPOSE: Overactive bladder (OAB) syndrome is a subset of storage lower urinary tract symptoms that significantly affects health-related quality of life, impacting social, occupational, and psychological well-being. Although the precise pathophysiology of OAB remains unclear, disruption of the neural network that regulates lower urinary tract activity has been suggested. The brain-bladder axis depends on a complex and extensive network of brain regions, with the periaqueductal gray (PAG) playing a pivotal role in mediating bidirectional communication. METHODS: This study investigates whether

Exploring the metastatic potential of isolated tumour cells and clusters-cords patterns of ISUP Grade 5 acinar adenocarcinoma of the prostate: a comprehensive morphological analysis.

Gleason pattern 5 (GP5) prostatic adenocarcinoma (PC) includes distinct morphologies: undifferentiated solid pattern (US), solid and cribriform with necrosis (CN), clusters and cords (CC), and isolated single tumour cells (ISTC). The role of these patterns in the metastatic setting is still poorly understood. We conducted a case-control retrospective histological characterization of two cohorts of ISUP Grade Group 5 PC, one with nodal metastases (N1) and one without (N0), comparing GP5 sub-patterns distribution, from robot-assisted radical prostatectomies with extended lymphadenectomy diagnose

Evaluating the scope of human leukocyte antigen polymorphisms influencing hepatitis B virus-related liver cancer and cirrhosis through multi-clustering analysis.

Hepatitis B virus remains a major cause of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, with genetic polymorphisms and mutations influencing immune responses and disease progression. Nguyen et al present novel findings on specific human leukocyte antigen (HLA) alleles, including rs2856718 of HLA-DQ and rs3077 and rs9277535 of HLA-DP, which may predispose individuals to cirrhosis and liver cancer, based on multi-clustering analysis. Here, we discuss the feasibility of this approach and identify key areas for further investigation, aiming to offer insights for advancing clinical practice and research

Discrimination of waterborne pathogens, Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts and bacteria using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy coupled with principal component analysis and hierarchical clustering.

Waterborne pathogens (parasites, bacteria) are serious threats to human health. Cryptosporidium parvum is one of the protozoan parasites that can contaminate drinking water and lead to diarrhea in animals and humans. Rapid and reliable detection of these kinds of waterborne pathogens is highly essential. Yet, current detection techniques are limited for waterborne pathogens and time-consuming and have some major drawbacks. Therefore, rapid screening methods would play an important role in controlling the outbreaks of these pathogens. Here, we used label-free surface-enhanced Raman Spectroscopy

Application of a quantum genetic algorithm and QTAIM analysis in the study of structural and electronic properties of neutral bimetallic clusters NaxLiy (4 ≤ x + y ≤ 10).

Alloy clusters of NaxLiy (4 ≤ x + y ≤ 10) are studied by exploring the potential energy surface in the ab initio MP2 level with the support of a quantum genetic algorithm (QGA). In some cases, the structures have been also refined with DFT and coupled-cluster methods. The general trends of sodium-lithium structures are in line with previous studies. The ionization potentials and polarizabilities to all structures were calculated with MP2 method and the average error between these two properties compared with experimental data was 6% and 13%, respectively. The topological analysis based on quan
