The neural grid code has been proposed to provide a mechanism for generalization and transfer of relational knowledge between situations enabling rapid adaptation of behavior in novel circumstances. However, to date, very little is known about the dynamics with which grid representations change at context transitions, or how such dynamics relate to downstream behavioral adaptation. Here we tested whether grid representations measured with fMRI rotate to match behavioral goals at context transitions and whether such rotations underlie knowledge transfer. Human participants (25 female and 23 mal

BACKGROUND: Physical fitness is a marker of health and is associated with health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Identifying which components of physical fitness are associated with HRQoL in people with fibromyalgia may contribute to the development of more specific therapeutic strategies.
OBJECTIVE: The 2 aims of this study were to examine the association of different components of physical fitness (ie, flexibility, muscle strength, speed and agility, and cardiorespiratory fitness) with HRQoL and to determine the extent to which any association between the components of physical fitness and

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates how team cognition occurs in care transitions from operating room (OR) to intensive care unit (ICU). We then seek to understand how the sociotechnical system and team cognition are related.
BACKGROUND: Effective handoffs are critical to ensuring patient safety and have been the subject of many improvement efforts. However, the types of team-level cognitive processing during handoffs have not been explored, nor is it clear how the sociotechnical system shapes team cognition.
METHOD: We conducted this study in an academic, Level 1 trauma center in the Midwest

BACKGROUND: Foreign body aspiration of dental objects is an uncommon but potentially serious complication of dental procedures. This study comprehensively reviewed published cases of dental object aspiration in adults, summarized clinical presentations and complications, and evaluated the success of bronchoscopic retrieval approaches and tools used.
METHODS: A search of PubMed from 1984 through 2023 was performed using the terms "dental" and "aspiration" and "bronchoscopy." Case reports and case series of adult patients requiring health care intervention were included.
RESULTS: A total of 10

Belief updating-the revision of beliefs in light of new evidence-is central to adaptive cognition and emotion regulation yet often disrupted in emotional disorders. This study examines the overlooked process of internally driven inferential update, the capacity to move spontaneously between competing causal explanations for an event regardless of new information. We address two gaps in literature: whether benefits depend on shift direction or on shifting itself, and whether effects persist to the next day. In two studies we tested inference updating for participants' personally meaningful nega

For decades, researchers have debated whether mental representations are symbolic or grounded in sensory inputs and motor programs. Certainly, aspects of mental representations are grounded. However, does the brain also contain abstract concept representations that mediate between perception and action in a flexible manner not tied to the details of sensory inputs and motor programs? Such conceptual pointers would be useful when concepts remain constant despite changes in appearance and associated actions. We evaluated whether human participants acquire such representations using fMRI. Partici

BACKGROUND: Reward can influence cognitive control; however, dysfunctional interactions between reward and cognitive control in adolescents with major depressive disorder (MDD) remain unclear.
METHODS: We recruited 35 adolescents with MDD and 29 healthy controls (HC) who completed the AX version of the Continuous Performance Test (AX-CPT) under reward and non-reward conditions, while undergoing functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS).
RESULTS: Adolescents with MDD exhibited slower response times and higher error rates compared to healthy controls. Under reward conditions, they responde

Growing evidence suggests that cognitive maps represent relations between social knowledge similar to how spatial locations are represented in an environment. Notably, the extant human medial temporal lobe literature assumes associations between social stimuli follow a linear associative mapping from an egocentric viewpoint to a cognitive map. Yet, this form of associative social memory does not account for a core phenomenon of social interactions in which social knowledge learned via comparisons to the self, other individuals or social networks are assimilated within a single frame of referen

BACKGROUND: Cognitive-behavioural self-care is advocated as a first step in the treatment of bulimia nervosa.
AIMS: To examine the effectiveness of a CD-ROM-based cognitive-behavioural intervention in bulimia nervosa and eating disorder not otherwise specified (NOS) (bulimic type) in a routine setting.
METHOD: Ninety-seven people with bulimia nervosa or eating disorder NOS were randomised to either CD-ROM without support for 3 months followed by a flexible number of therapist sessions or to a 3-month waiting list followed by 15 sessions of therapist cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) (ISRCT

In a series of experiments, young children who were disoriented in a novel environment reoriented themselves in accord with the large-scale shape of the environment but not in accord with nongeometric properties of the environment such as the color of a wall, the patterning on a box, or the categorical identity of an object. Because children's failure to reorient by nongeometric information cannot be attributed to limits on their ability to detect, remember, or use that information for other purposes, this failure suggests that children's reorientation, at least in relatively novel environment

Macphail's comparative approach to intelligence focused on associative processes, an orientation inconsistent with more multifaceted lay and scientific understandings of the term. His ultimate emphasis on associative processes indicated few differences in intelligence among vertebrates. We explore options more attuned to common definitions by considering intelligence in terms of richness of representations of the world, the interconnectivity of those representations, the ability to flexibly change those connections, and knowledge. We focus on marine mammals, represented by the amphibious pinni

The aim of this study was to provide a broad picture of Executive Functioning (EF) in NF1 children, while taking into account their lower average IQ and increased Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) symptoms. This was done by administering an extended battery of tasks and questionnaires, designed to reduce task impurity, that measures five EF domains (inhibition, cognitive flexibility, working memory, generativity and planning) in a laboratory setting and in daily life. Data are presented for 42 age- and gender-matched NF1, 52 typically developing, and 52 ASD children (8-18 years). Our results indi…

Joint 'flexibility' is an encompassing term influenced by both a joint's maximum range of motion (ROMmax) and its resistance to rotation, i.e. its stiffness. A critical amount of flexibility is thought to be important for both sports performance and daily and occupational tasks. Improvements in joint ROMmax, specifically, are often assumed to result from material and mechanical changes in the joint's soft tissue structures; however, they also may result from changes in sensory information relayed from peripheral receptors to the brain, or the interpretation of that information. Changes in psyc

PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is a third-wave psychological therapy that has shown effectiveness in managing psychological distress across various conditions, including chronic illnesses. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) often leads to cognitive impairments, mood disturbances, and psychological distress. While pharmacological treatments have limitations, non-pharmacological approaches, such as ACT, offer a promising alternative. This study systematically examined the efficacy of ACT on depression and anxiety in adults with TBI.

BACKGROUND: Offspring of parents with a history of major depressive disorder (MDD) and especially those exposed to a current episode of parental depression have been found to be at increased risk for developing depression themselves. Exposure to a current parental depressive episode also reduces the efficacy of interventions in high risk or depressed adolescents. This highlights the need to identify protective factors for adolescents exposed to a current parental depressive episode. Executive functions serve as an important cognitive resource, involved in the ability to regulate mood and thoug

RATIONALE: Poor cognitive control, including reversal learning deficits, has been reported in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, in stimulant-dependent humans, and in animal models of these disorders; these conditions have each been associated with abnormal catecholaminergic function within the prefrontal cortex.
OBJECTIVES: In the current studies, we sought to explore how elevations in extracellular catecholamine levels, produced by pharmacological inhibition of catecholamine reuptake proteins, affect behavioral flexibility in rats and monkeys.
