[Statics and dynamics of psychopathies in the concept of Ε. Κraepelin].

The concept of psychopathic personalities presented in the 8-th last lifetime edition of E. Kraepelin's textbook is analyzed. The special interest was guided by the fact that many types of psychopathic personalities were described by E. Kraepelin in other rubrics: «primary morbid states», manic-depressive illness, paranoia, hysteria, Dementia praecox. E. Kraepelin gave also a prognosis of further development of psychopathic personality and by this way analyzed its dynamics. So, for example, he found that the prognosis of unstable personalities is less favorable compared to those with excitable

Multiscale Heterogeneity of White Matter Morphometry in Psychiatric Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Interindividual variability in the neurobiological and clinical characteristics of mental illnesses are often overlooked by classical group-mean case-control studies. Studies using normative modeling to infer person-specific deviations of gray matter volume have indicated that group means are not representative of most individuals. The extent to which this variability is present in white matter morphometry, which is integral to brain function, remains unclear. METHODS: We applied warped Bayesian linear regression normative models to T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging data and

Diagnostic Utility of Conners Continuous Performance Test-3 for Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVE: To review the literature on the utility of the Conners CPT-3 in persons with ADHD. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted. Six databases were searched using inclusion criteria: research studies, year 2000+, English, and ages 8+. Two raters independently screened 1,480 title/abstracts and subsequently reviewed 399 full texts. Data extraction and critical appraisal were conducted. Reflective thematic analysis through inductive coding identified qualitative themes. RESULTS: Thirteen studies met inclusion criteria with five themes identified. Five studies found CPT-3 was a weak or

An experimental analysis of hypochondriasis.

Hypochondriasis (HC) involves preoccupation with fears of having a serious medical illness based on the misinterpretation of benign bodily perturbations. Individuals with HC also perform behaviors such as checking and reassurance-seeking presumably to reduce health-related fears. Experimental behavioral analyses of HC symptoms, however, are lacking. In the present study, 27 patients with HC were exposed to personally relevant health-related stimuli under one of two conditions: (a) subsequently performing safety-seeking behaviors (e.g., checking) (n=14) or (b) subsequently being instructed not

Complications and Ethical Challenges in Neurosurgery for Psychiatric Disorders.

Functional neurosurgery has emerged as a potential therapeutic option for patients with severe, treatment-resistant psychiatric disorders such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and major depressive disorder (MDD). Among the most studied interventions, deep brain stimulation (DBS) has shown promising outcomes in open-label studies, though controlled trials have yielded more modest results. This discrepancy, along with concerns about surgical risks, neuropsychiatric side effects, and ethical challenges, has limited the broader implementation of psychiatric neurosurgery. This review explores

Psychedelic Therapy's Transdiagnostic Effects: A Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) Perspective.

Accumulating clinical evidence shows that psychedelic therapy, by synergistically combining psychopharmacology and psychological support, offers a promising transdiagnostic treatment strategy for a range of disorders with restricted and/or maladaptive habitual patterns of emotion, cognition and behavior, notably, depression (MDD), treatment resistant depression (TRD) and addiction disorders, but perhaps also anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and eating disorders. Despite the emergent transdiagnostic evidence, the specific clinical dim

Deep Brain Stimulation: Mechanisms, Cost-Effectiveness, and Precision Applications Across Neurology and Psychiatry.

In less than 30 years, Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) has evolved from an antiparkinsonian rescue intervention into a flexible neuromodulatory therapy with the potential for personalized, adaptive, and enhancement-focused interventions. In this review we collected evidence from seven areas: (i) modern eligibility criteria, and ways to practically improve on these, outside of 'Core Assessment Program of Surgical Interventional Therapies in Parkinson's Disease' (CAPSIT-PD); (ii) cost-effectiveness, where long-horizon models now show positive incremental net monetary benefit for Parkinson's disease

Co-occurring functional neurological disorder and autism: an exploratory study of comorbidities in a retrospective cohort study using TriNetX.

BACKGROUND: Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) encompasses motor, cognitive, and sensory symptoms resulting from disruptions in brain-body communication. Emerging research suggests a higher-than-expected occurrence of autism in FND, potentially due to shared cognitive mechanisms and overlapping comorbidities. However, large-scale characterisation of this dual-diagnosis is lacking. METHODS: Using de-identified health records from the TriNetX research network, we identified children and adults with both FND and autism ('FND + Autism'), comparing them to individuals with FND only ('FND-only'

Associations between body weight and personality disorders in a nationally representative sample.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether, in the general population, individuals in numerous abnormal body weight categories had higher odds of having personality disorders (PDs) than normal-weight individuals. Although personality functioning is hypothesized to be associated with body weight, there is a dearth of empirical evaluation of this topic. METHODS: The association of body weight (five categories: underweight [body mass index [BMI] <18.5]; normal [18.5 <or= BMI <25]; overweight [25 <or= BMI <30]; obese [30 <or= BMI <40]; and extremely obese [BMI >or=40]) with personality disorders was investi

Toward an integrative model of the spectrum of mood, behavioral and personality disorders based on fear and anger traits: I. Clinical implications.

Current formal psychiatric approaches to nosology are plagued by an unwieldy degree of heterogeneity with insufficient appreciation of the commonalities of emotional, personality, behavioral, and addictive disorders. We address this challenge by building a spectrum model that integrates the advantages of Cloninger's and Akiskalian approaches to personality and temperament while avoiding some of their limitations. We specifically propose that "fear" and "anger" traits--used in a broader connotation than in the conventional literature--provide an optimum basis for understanding how the spectra o

Use of Fluoxetine in Treating Compulsive Sexual Behavior: A Case Report.

Compulsive sexual behavior (CSB) disorder is generally characterized by recurrent and intense sexually arousing fantasies, sexual urges, and behaviors that cause individual distress or impair daily functioning. CSB has significant consequences, including but not limited to personal distress, depression, anxiety, and a high risk of sexually transmitted diseases. CSB is often seen along with other psychiatric disorders, most commonly with major depressive and substance use disorders.  A primary goal of treatment for CSB is to help manage the uncontrollable impulses and urges a patient endures by

The junction between self and other? Temporo-parietal dysfunction in neuropsychiatry.

The temporo-parietal junction (TPJ) is implicated in a variety of processes including multisensory integration, social cognition, sense of agency and stimulus-driven attention functions. Furthermore, manipulation of cortical excitation in this region can influence a diverse range of personal and interpersonal perceptions, from those involved in moral decision making to judgments about the location of the self in space. Synthesis of existing studies places the TPJ at the neural interface between mind and matter, where information about both mental and physical states is processed and integrated

What type of worker are you? Work-related Inventory (WI-10): A comprehensive instrument for the measurement of workaholism.

BACKGROUND: In literature, there are many instruments for evaluating workaholism; however, they do not have convergent validity, because of the lack of a shared definition of workaholism. OBJECTIVE: We propose a new instrument for evaluating workaholism and work engagement, namely the Work-related Inventory (WI-10), which is based on Loscalzo and Giannini's (2017) comprehensive definition of workaholism. METHODS: We developed a pool of 36 items, covering: 1) addiction symptoms; 2) obsessive-compulsive symptoms, and 3) work engagement. Then, we conducted Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor an

[Nocturnal sleep-related eating disorder that responds to topiramate].

INTRODUCTION: Nocturnal sleep-related eating disorder is a non-REM sleep parasomnia that is associated to other sleep disorders, especially sleepwalking. It becomes chronic, is not remitting and consists in episodes of compulsive eating during the night, which are then partially or completely forgotten by the patient. This condition must be differentiated from night-eating syndrome, which is far more common and is linked to endocrinological and psychiatric disorders, as well as to other disorders involving eating behaviour during sleeping hours. CASE REPORT: A 28-year-old male who had suffere

[The reclassification of neurodevelopmental disorders in ICD-11. German Version].

In the ICD-10 the developmental disorders are categorized under three different chapters: F7 for mental retardation, F8 for developmental disorders and F9 for disorders with onset in childhood and adolescence. In ICD-11 neurodevelopmental disorders represent the first new main classification group. The disorders grouped in these categories are all characterized by essentially genetically related atypical patterns of perception, emotional processing, cognition (general and social), language and motor skills. These patterns of mental functioning usually manifest in the first decade of developmen
