OBJECTIVES: To increase our understanding of the imaging features of central neurocytoma (CN) and improve the preoperative MRI diagnosis accuracy.
METHODS: Preoperative MR images of 30 CNs and another 68 intraventricular non-CN tumours were analysed by one experienced neuroradiologist retrospectively to identify previously reported features and new features of CN. Six blinded radiologists independently reviewed all these MRI images, and scored all characteristic features on a five-point scale. Diagnostic value was assessed by the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC); s

We studied the concentration of hyaluronan in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in various diseases and attempted to define its reference interval. A radioassay utilizing cartilage proteins with affinity for hyaluronan was used in determining the concentration of 200 lumbar and 27 ventricular CSF specimens and 11 brain cyst fluids. Molecular weight distributions were determined by gel chromatography and localization in brain tissue by histochemistry. The hyaluronan level of lumbar CSF showed an increase with age; comparatively healthy children had (mean +/- SD) 50 +/- 41 micrograms/L (n = 40) and adul…

Objective To describe a case of dermoid cyst arising from the pterygopalatine fossa and review the literature. Methods We report a case of a 23-year-old man who suffered a car accident 2 years before otolaryngologic attendance. He had one episode of generalized tonic-clonic seizure and developed a reduction of visual acuity of the left side after the accident. Neurologic investigation was performed and magnetic resonance imaging revealed an incidental finding of a heterogeneous ovoid lesion in the pterygopalatine fossa, hyperintense on T2-weighted imaging. Results Endoscopic sinus surgery with

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: The rupture of the pulmonary hydatid cyst is a serious clinical problem because it causes significant local and systemic symptoms. Also, cyst rupture is not rare, but it is one of the most frightening and severe complications of hydatid cysts in the lung.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 16-year-old male with a 15-x-15-cm cyst in the lower lobe of his left lung that had ruptured into the pleural space and bronchus, resulting in a fistula. The germinal layer was discovered within the fluid of the effusion inside the pleural cavity. The cyst was surgically excised and

UNLABELLED: Surgical treatment for epidermoid cysts of the chiasmatic region is a challenge because of the tendency to a massive spread of epidermoid masses through the cerebrospinal fluid pathways and a significant lesion deviation from the midline.
PURPOSE: To analyze capabilities of the extended endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal approach in surgery for epidermoid cysts.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 6 patients with epidermoid cysts of the chiasmatic region who were operated on using the extended anterior endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal approach at the Burdenko Neurosurg

BACKGROUND: Neurocysticercosis, an infection of the central nervous system with the larval cysts of the pork tapeworm, Taenia solium, is the most common parasitic disease of the central nervous system. The disease is a major global cause of acquired epilepsy and may also manifest as intracranial hypertension due to mass effect from large cysts or to cerebrospinal fluid flow obstruction by intraventricular cysts or inflammation of the subarachnoid space. While the condition is endemic in several regions of the world and has been appreciated as a public health problem in such regions for several

Suprasellar arachnoid cysts are basal midline masses that represent a rare but surgically remediable cause of hydrocephalus and neurologic deficits. These cysts represent a diagnostic challenge and often go unrecognized for many years. The authors review the computed tomographic (CT) findings in seven patients with documented suprasellar arachnoid cysts and define previously undescribed diagnostic criteria. These cysts usually can be differentiated from cystic midline neoplasms by their CT density, homogeneity, and location as well as by their lack of fat, lack of calcification, and absence of

Peritoneal inclusion cysts (PICs) are benign, multilocular fluid-filled lesions that predominantly affect women of reproductive age, often arising after abdominal surgery or chronic inflammation. We present the case of a 30-year-old woman with a history of laparotomy for a myometrial mass, who developed severe lower abdominal pain and distension 5 months postsurgery. Initial ultrasound revealed a large intraperitoneal fluid collection measuring 10 cm, with debris and septations. MRI further characterized the lesion as a peritoneal inclusion cyst, showing enhancing septations and no solid compo

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is caused by mutations in at least three different genes: PKD1, PKD2, and PKD3. ADPKD1 is an inherited disorder that has led to the discovery of a novel protein, polycystin. Polycystin, a 460 kd protein with a host of domains implicating a potential role in cell-cell and cell-matrix regulation, is encoded by a 52 kb gene with a 14 kb mRNA. The PKD2 protein is also large (110 kd) and is thought to interact with polycystin. ADPKD1 is caused by mutated DNA that encodes an abnormal form of polycystin. Polycystin appears to have a normal role in

Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a life-threatening genetic disorder characterized by the presence of fluid-filled cysts primarily in the kidneys. PKD can be inherited as autosomal recessive (ARPKD) or autosomal dominant (ADPKD) traits. Mutations in either the PKD1 or PKD2 genes, which encode polycystin 1 and polycystin 2, are the underlying cause of ADPKD. Progressive cyst formation and renal enlargement lead to renal insufficiency in these patients, which need to be managed by lifelong dialysis or renal transplantation. While characteristic features of PKD are abnormalities in epithelial c

INTRODUCTION: An intraventricular cysticercus cyst is observed in 7%-30% patients of neurocysticercosis (NCC). Apart from causing arachnoiditis, intraventricular NCC (IVNCC) can cause sudden death due to acute episodes of hydrocephalus. Various treatment modalities available are external cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) diversion, microsurgical removal, and endoscopic management. There is no consensus regarding the optimal surgical treatment strategy. We are presenting our experience by doing a retrospective analysis of 26 patients having endoscopic removal of IVNCC with a rigid endoscope and angioca

OBJECTIVE: Arachnoid cysts are discrete pockets of CSF or CSF-like fluid found adjacent to normal CSF spaces, either spinal or cranial. Spinal arachnoid cysts (SAC) are most commonly extradural, however intradural or perineural are also described.
METHODS: All patients admitted to our center and surgically treated with a diagnosis of SAC, were included in the study. The results were analyzed in terms of the clinical symptoms, location of cyst, surgical procedure performed and outcome following surgery.
RESULTS: Eleven patients were operated for SAC during the study period and the mean age at

Purpose Pancreatic cystic lesions are common incidental findings on imaging, but up to half may be forerunners of pancreatic cancer. Therefore, accurate differential diagnosis is crucial for correct patient management. Unfortunately, currently available diagnostic methods cannot robustly identify premalignant and malignant pancreatic cystic lesions. Methods Cyst fluid samples obtained by routine endoscopic ultrasound-guided aspiration were used for the analyses. In a cohort of 24 patients, eight biomarker candidates for malignant potential and high-grade dysplasia/cancer were identified by an …

The use of semiquantitative PCR (SQPCR) to assess Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) infection and its response to treatment was studied with rats. Groups of eight rats were immunosuppressed with steroids for 3 to 12 weeks. Untreated controls were maintained for the same periods. Three groups of rats were treated with pentamidine, three groups were treated with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, and three groups of rats were tapered from steroids. At various times during suppression, rats from the different groups were sacrificed. At necropsy, lungs were lavaged to obtain bronchoalveolar fluids

Bone metastases are usually seen on imaging studies as lytic lesions and less often as sclerotic or mixed lesions. We report an exceedingly unusual case of breast cancer identified after magnetic resonance imaging showed bone metastases with fluid-fluid levels in the spine and sacrum. Bone images containing fluid-fluid levels are usually solitary abnormalities produced by aneurismal bone cysts. The fluid-fluid level is due to bleeding within the tumor followed by layering of the blood components based on density differences. Only two other cases of bone metastases with multiple fluid-fluid lev

BACKGROUND: Although nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) is considered a disorder that primarily affects the optic nerve head, optical coherence tomography (OCT) shows peripapillary and foveal subretinal fluid associated with optic disc swelling from NAION. We sought to further evaluate retinal and vitreous changes in patients with NAION.
METHODS: Patients diagnosed with NAION at the New England Eye Center between 2013 and 2017 were evaluated using OCT. The presence and distribution of subretinal fluid was analyzed. Evidence of other vitreoretinal changes, including vitreo
