Effects of TMEM232 Variant on Infant Atopic Dermatitis According to Maternal Factors.

Background: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is caused by interactions between genetic susceptibility and environmental factors. Transmembrane protein 232 (TMEM232) is one of the genes strongly implicated in AD. Methods: In the present study, we aimed to investigate the association between AD with variants within TMEM232 based on maternal factors, including a history of allergic diseases, and sensitization to Der f. We performed a candidate gene association study involving the Cohort for Childhood Origins of Asthma and Allergic Diseases. Results: A single variant of the TMEM232 gene, rs17132261, was fou

Factors associated with comorbidity development in atopic dermatitis: a cross-section study.

Identifying the characteristics of atopic dermatitis (AD) patients with its comorbidity has become increasingly crucial. We aimed to investigate the relevant factors associated with comorbidities in adults with AD. We analyzed cross-sectional data through univariate and multivariate regression analyses, encompassing 439 adult cases of AD from the Clinical Research and Homogenization Diagnosis and Treatment Project for Type 2 Inflammatory Dermatosis. It was found that 231 patients developed at least one comorbidity. 161 cases had a positive family history of atopy, 292 exhibited elevated IgE le

Self-management Support for Patients with Atopic Dermatitis: A Qualitative Interview Study.

Patients with a chronic skin disease, eg, atopic dermatitis, need self-management skills to increase their quality of life. We explored patients' needs for self-management support from healthcare professionals and how these needs can be met in a dermatology setting. Interpretive description methodology was chosen for iterative data collection and analysis of qualitative interviews with patients with atopic dermatitis. Two mutually dependent themes were found to be supportive of patients' self-management. Personal and disease-related recognition was fundamental to successful support. However, g

Evaluating the safety and efficacy of baricitinib for the treatment of moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis.

INTRODUCTION: New biologic and small molecule therapeutics have emerged for the treatment of moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis (AD), including oral Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors such as baricitinib. While JAK inhibitors are commonly used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease, these agents are relatively new in the field of dermatology. AREAS COVERED: In this review, we outline the efficacy and safety data of phase III randomized controlled trials investigating the use of baricitinib for moderate-to-severe AD. A literature search was performed using PubMed.gov to iden

Exposure to Volatile Organic Compounds May Contribute to Atopic Dermatitis in Adults.

BACKGROUND: Volatile organic compounds (VOC) are major indoor air pollutants. Previous studies reported an association between VOC exposure and allergic diseases. Here, we aimed to explore the relationship between VOC exposure and atopic dermatitis (AD) in adults. METHODS: We prospectively enrolled 31 adult AD patients and 11 healthy subjects as controls. Urine metabolite levels of VOCs, including 1.3-butadiene, acrylamide, benzene, toluene, and xylene, were all determined with liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. The relationship between AD and log-transformed urine levels of VOC metabol

Immunoexpression of IL-33 in the different clinical aspects of canine atopic dermatitis.

Canine atopic dermatitis (CAD) is a chronic and inflammatory skin condition with a multifaceted origin, involving genetic factors, skin barrier abnormalities, immune responses, and hypersensitivity to various allergens. Interleukin 33 (IL-33), released by keratinocytes upon cellular injury, plays a crucial role in atopic dermatitis pathogenesis by inducing Th2 lymphocyte-mediated immune responses. This study aimed to evaluate IL-33 expression in dogs with atopic dermatitis and compare it to a control group. Forty-nine dogs were included, with 39 having atopic dermatitis, subdivided into groups

Multi-Omics Approach to Improved Diagnosis and Treatment of Atopic Dermatitis and Psoriasis.

Psoriasis and atopic dermatitis fall within the category of cutaneous immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs). The prevalence of IMIDs is increasing in industrialized societies, influenced by both environmental changes and a genetic predisposition. However, the exact immune factors driving these chronic, progressive diseases are not fully understood. By using multi-omics techniques in cutaneous IMIDs, it is expected to advance the understanding of skin biology, uncover the underlying mechanisms of skin conditions, and potentially devise precise and personalized approaches to diagnosis an

Skin sensing and wearable technology as tools to measure atopic dermatitis severity.

Wearable medical technology encompasses a range of electronic devices that act as biosensors. Atopic dermatitis (AD) is the commonest inflammatory skin disease and represents an important area of need in which to leverage the power of wearable biosensor technology, especially as the impact of COVID-19 increases the likelihood of virtual consultations becoming an integrated part of clinical practice. The aim of this review is to systematically define the published evidence for the utility of wearable biosensors in assessment and management of atopic dermatitis (AD). A systematic literature sear

Differences in immunological profile in atopic dermatitis patients with and without dupilumab therapy.

Our aim is to determine the number of leukocytes, T lymphocytes and B lymphocytes and the expression of activation markers CD200 and CD23 on B lymphocytes in atopic dermatitis (AD) patients (treated and not treated with dupilumab) during the pollen season. We examined 29 patients not treated with dupilumab, 24 patients treated with dupilumab and 40 healthy subjects as a control group. The count of T and B lymphocytes and their subsets were assessed by flow cytometry. The non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis one-factor analysis of variance with post hoc by Dunn's test with Bonferroni's modification wa

Pathomechanism of Pruritus in Psoriasis and Atopic Dermatitis: Novel Approaches, Similarities and Differences.

Pruritus is defined as an unpleasant sensation that elicits a desire to scratch. Nearly a third of the world's population may suffer from pruritus during their lifetime. This symptom is widely observed in numerous inflammatory skin diseases-e.g., approximately 70-90% of patients with psoriasis and almost every patient with atopic dermatitis suffer from pruritus. Although the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis and psoriasis is different, the complex intricacies between several biochemical mediators, enzymes, and pathways seem to play a crucial role in both conditions. Despite the high prevalence

Baricitinib Lipid-Based Nanosystems as a Topical Alternative for Atopic Dermatitis Treatment.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic autoimmune inflammatory skin disorder which causes a significant clinical problem due to its prevalence. The ongoing treatment for AD is aimed at improving the patient's quality of life. Additionally, glucocorticoids or immunosuppressants are being used in systemic therapy. Baricitinib (BNB) is a reversible Janus-associated kinase (JAK)-inhibitor; JAK is an important kinase involved in different immune responses. We aimed at developing and evaluating new topical liposomal formulations loaded with BNB for the treatment of flare ups. Three liposomal formulatio
