A new method or early prognostication of Perthes' disease is presented. It is based entirely on radiological assessment and was developed from a review of 69 radiologic examinations performed during the first year of the disease in 27 patients with unilateral Perthes' disease. A simple mathematical function was constructed with the aid of discriminant analysis of four parameters, viz the metaphyseal width of the femur, the position of the femoral head in relation to the acetabulum, and the acetabular height and breadth.

The present report summarizes work to date on the Derogatis Sexual Functioning Inventory (DSFI), a multidimensional measure of human sexual functioning. We discuss the rationale for the test as well as the selection of the primary domains of measurement. Reliability coefficients for the various subtests are given, and a review section on validation studies is provided, including a factor analysis, predictive validation, and discriminant function analyses. Prototypic clinical profiles are also provided for several of the major types of sexual dysfunction.

Quantification of skin changes due to acanthosis nigricans (AN), a disorder common among insulin-resistant diabetic and obese individuals, was investigated using two optical techniques: diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and colorimetry. Measurements were obtained from AN lesions on the neck and two control sites of eight AN patients. A principal component/discriminant function analysis successfully differentiated between AN lesion and normal skin with 87.7% sensitivity and 94.8% specificity in DRS measurements and 97.2% sensitivity and 96.4% specificity in colorimetry measurements.

A multivariate discriminant analysis of potential risk factors for the progression of visual field defects was performed in 70 patients with chronic open-angle or low-tension glaucoma. Male sex, low diastolic blood pressure and diabetes mellitus were found to be significant risk factors. When the patients with low-tension glaucoma were excluded, a high mean intraocular pressure was identified as a risk factor. It was concluded that there is no reliable way to predict future visual field loss in patients with glaucoma.
