Endometriosis is the ectopic growth of viable endometrium outside the uterus, affecting approximately 7% of females. It commonly affects pelvic structures including the bowel. PURPOSE: The purpose of this work is to describe the CT findings of small-bowel wall thickening related to a long intestinal tube in patients with bowel obstruction and to discuss the mechanism of this incidental finding.
METHOD: Ten consecutive patients with intubation of a long intestinal tube for bowel obstruction were studied retrospectively. Five cases were diagnosed as colon cancer, three as postoperative adhesion, one as Meckel diverticulitis, and one as internal hernia of the small bowel. The history and imaging studies of these patients were reviewed.

A total of 3,727 in-patients with acute abdominal symptoms were identified during the first quarter of 1995 at the surgical clinics of the nine hospitals with emergency departments in the county of Stockholm. Computed tomography (CT) is playing an increasingly greater role as the initial diagnostic imaging modality for acute abdomen. Abdominal pain is the most common presenting complaint for intestinal lymphoma, and acute abdomen is a not infrequent admitting complaint. We report a case of sigmoido-vesical fistula due to sigmoid diverticulitis. Magnetic resonance imaging enabled us to visualize the fistula itself in the bladder wall. Magnetic resonance imaging was highly effective in making a precise diagnosis and also provided important additional information for the preoperative work-up of the patient.

A series of 67 patients treated by Hartmann's operation was studied, special attention being given to complications originating from the rectal stump. In 13 patients, complications--abscesses of the rectal stump and fistulas from the rectal stump to the small intestine--were seen. Left hemicolectomy is the ideal treatment of sigmoid cancer, but sometimes sigmoidectomy is a safe treatment. We radically treated 102 patients affected by sigmoid cancer: 83 were gross sigmoid cancer treated by left hemicolectomy, 19 were residual cancer after endoscopic polypectomy; of these, 4 underwent left hemicolectomy and 15 underwent sigmoidectomy.
