Combination Social Protection for Reducing HIV-Risk Behavior Among Adolescents in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Social protection (ie, cash transfers, free schools, parental support) has potential for adolescent HIV prevention. We aimed to identify which social protection interventions are most effective and whether combined social protection has greater effects in South Africa. METHODS: In this prospective longitudinal study, we interviewed 3516 adolescents aged 10-18 between 2009 and 2012. We sampled all homes with a resident adolescent in randomly selected census areas in 4 urban and rural sites in 2 South African provinces. We measured household receipt of 14 social protection intervent

Genetic basis of delay discounting in frequent gamblers: examination of a priori candidates and exploration of a panel of dopamine-related loci.

INTRODUCTION: Delay discounting is a behavioral economic index of impulsivity that reflects preferences for small immediate rewards relative to larger delayed rewards. It has been consistently linked to pathological gambling and other forms of addictive behavior, and has been proposed to be a behavioral characteristic that may link genetic variation and risk of developing addictive disorders (i.e., an endophenotype). Studies to date have revealed significant associations with polymorphisms associated with dopamine neurotransmission. The current study examined associations between delay discoun

"Condoms are reliable but I am not": A qualitative analysis of AIDS-related beliefs and attitudes of young heterosexual adults in Budapest, Hungary, and St. Petersburg, Russia.

HIV and STD prevention is an essential component of public health initiatives in countries throughout Central and Eastern Europe. Liberalization in sexual values, declining age at first sex, higher levels of sexual activity, and inconsistent condom use have been well-documented among young people in the region following the political, economic, and cultural transitions after the end of the state socialism era. Less well-understood are the reasons for high-risk sexual behavior and psychosocial factors that must be addressed in the development of effective HIV/STD prevention programs. This study

Impact of rapid socio-economic changes on teenage pregnancies in Estonia during 1992-2001.

BACKGROUND: Major socio-economic changes, including health care reforms and changes in the school curriculum, took place in Estonia after the country regained its independence in 1991. These changes affected people's reproductive behavior in many ways. In this article, the impact of the changes on the reproductive behavior of teenage girls, measured by adolescent fertility and abortion rates between 1992 and 2001, is analyzed. METHODS: National data on abortions and births were obtained from official medical statistics, particularly from the Estonian Abortion Registry and the Estonian Medical

Functional status and overall quality of life in a multiethnic HIV-positive population.

The objective of this study was to examine the sociodemographic and behavioral variables associated with quality of life (QOL) among multiethnic, economically disadvantaged patients with HIV/AIDS. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in a large inner-city HIV/AIDS clinic serving medically indigent residents of Houston, Texas, and the surrounding area. On arrival at the clinic, patients were systematically approached and asked to complete a questionnaire, offered in both English and Spanish. Demographic characteristics, stage of disease, and behavioral variables were assessed in addition to w

Thermal buffering with medium-temperature PCM for enhanced solar still performance in hot Egyptian conditions.

Solar-still desalination is a promising, sustainable option for decentralizing freshwater production in areas with useful solar irradiation. Nevertheless, the relatively low productivity of conventional solar stills is always an obstacle to their large-scale application. In response to this challenge, thermal energy storage has been a subject of extensive research as a potent method that can be employed in the solar desalination system via phase-change materials (PCMs). The current study integrated a medium-temperature PCM into a single-slope solar still to enhance thermal energy storage and p

Examining the association of neighborhood conditions on attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder symptoms in autistic youth using the child opportunity index 2.0.

BACKGROUND: While neighborhood conditions have previously been shown to have substantial effects on later occupational, educational and health outcomes, this is the first study to examine the relation between neighborhood factors and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms in children with autism and developmental delays. METHODS: Children from the CHARGE (Childhood Autism Risks from Genetics and the Environment) Study were evaluated at ages 2-5 years and then later in the ReCHARGE (follow-up) Study at ages 8-20 years (mid-childhood/adolescence). Using linear regression, we a

Family environments and daily activities shape children's executive function: Cross-ethnic evidence from a multicultural Asian society.

Executive function (EF), encompassing cognitive "cool" and affective "hot" components, develops in the context of children's everyday experiences during early childhood. However, how family contexts shape EF through children's daily activities remains less well-understood, particularly in Asian societies. Drawing on nationally representative longitudinal data from the Singapore Longitudinal Early Development Study, we examined how parental resources, parenting behaviors, and children's time use contribute to hot and cool EF, indexed by working memory and delay of gratification, respectively. Dihydromyricetin Modulates Neuropathic Pain and Depression: A Correlation with Hippocampal Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor in Mice.

INTRODUCTION: Neuropathic pain (NP) is a multidisciplinary problem of medicine, psychology, sociology and economics. The emotional disorders caused by neuropathic pain are seriously underestimated. The dynamic interaction between the NP and emotional disorders greatly increasing the difficulty in clinical treatment, highlighting the importance of finding an effective treatment for neuropathic pain combined with depression. Dihydromyricetin (DHM) has been shown to be effective in improving neurological diseases due to its potent anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects. METHODS: In this s

Unravelling the biological nexus of smoking and postpartum depression: a meta-analysis and functional genomics approach.

PURPOSE: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a prevalent psychological condition among birthing women. While several psycho-socio-economic and neurobiological factors influence its development, its relationship with smoking behavior and nicotine addiction remains largely inconclusive. METHODS: In this combinatorial study, we first evaluate the relationship between smoking and depressive behaviors in postpartum women using data extracted from pertinent primary epidemiological studies. Additionally, to discern the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying this association, we identified common ge

Enablers of and barriers to ART adherence among female sex workers in mid-western Uganda: a qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Female sex workers (FSWs) in Uganda experience numerous barriers to antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence. We used the planned behavior theory to help explore the enablers and barriers to ART adherence among FSWs. Understanding the barriers to ART adherence may help contribute to the development of interventions to improve ART adherence among the FSWs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A descriptive qualitative study was conducted in Fort portal City. We conducted 30 in-depth interviews among FSWs who had been taking ART for at least six months. Furthermore, six key informant interviews w

Offshore windfarm construction elevates metabolic rate and increases predation vulnerability of a key marine invertebrate.

A global increase in offshore windfarm development is critical to our renewable energy future. Yet, widespread construction plans have generated substantial concern for impacts to co-occurring organisms and the communities they form. Pile driving construction, prominent in offshore windfarm development, produces among the highest amplitude sounds in the ocean creating widespread concern for a diverse array of taxa. However, studies addressing ecologically key species are generally lacking and most research is disparate, failing to integrate across response types (e.g., behavior, physiology, an

Data-driven analyses of behavioral strategies to eliminate cysticercosis in sub-Saharan Africa.

BACKGROUND: The multi-host taeniosis/cysticercosis disease system is associated with significant neurological morbidity, as well as economic burden, globally. We investigated whether lower cost behavioral interventions are sufficient for local elimination of human cysticercosis in Boulkiemdé, Sanguié, and Nayala provinces of Burkina Faso. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Province-specific data on human behaviors (i.e., latrine use and pork consumption) and serological prevalence of human and pig disease were used to inform a deterministic, compartmental model of the taeniosis/cysticercosis dis

Social vulnerabilities as risk factor of childhood obesity development and their role in prevention programs.

INTRODUCTION: Large socioeconomic, gender, and ethnic inequalities exist in terms of childhood obesity worldwide. Children from low socioeconomic status families are more likely to have overweight/obesity and related cardiometabolic problems and future cancer risk. A wider concept are social vulnerabilities defined as social or economic characteristics or experiences negatively affecting children through behavioral, biological factors, or mental health. Social vulnerabilities include also therefore low subjective perceptions of social position. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to identify social vu
