Christ-Siemens-Touraine (CST) is a rare hereditary disorder of X-linked recessive trait, characterized by abnormal development of two or more structures or tissues of ectodermal origin. The common clinical findings include hypodontia, hypohydrosis, hypotrichosis, and onychodysplasia. Although hypodontia is common, anodontia is a rare feature. Most of the patients are suffering from social rejection and consequent psychological trauma because of the facial dysmorphism and absence of multiple teeth. Oral rehabilitation is of prime importance for such patients. This article presents a case in a 5

Adams-Oliver syndrome is a rare congenital condition that should be considered in persons with terminal transverse limb deficiencies and scalp defects (aplasia cutis congenita). Broad phenotypic variability exists in this condition. In its more severe forms, Adams-Oliver syndrome can involve the cardiovascular system, central nervous system, gastrointestinal tract, and genitourinary system and should require prompt evaluation by appropriate subspecialists. Extremity involvement is typically bilateral and asymmetrical, with lower extremities involved more than upper extremities. Brachydactyly i

The authors report two-sibling case of Adams Oliver syndrome. One was managed with early surgical intervention after a period of failed conservative management and the other conservatively managed until reconstruction and surgical correction of alopecia. The goal of treatment is to achieve a complete closure of the defect without encountering any fatal complications such as haemorrhage and infection or causing any long-term neurological morbidity. Various papers have been published related to ACC, yet there is no consensus on the therapeutic approach. The management decision hinges upon balanc

In early infancy, a congenital area of alopecia of the scalp may be the clinical presentation of various diseases, with the two most common being sebaceous naevus and aplasia cutis congenita. Typical lesions are easily diagnosed, but soon after birth, the differential diagnosis may be difficult if the clinical features of the lesion are not distinctive. In this paper, we report the usefulness of dermatoscopy in such cases.

Aplasia cutis congenita is a rare disorder characterized by absence of skin. Lesions typically occur on the vertex and are sometimes small, but they can affect deep tissues such as the skull bone and dura. Mortality is related to the depth and size of the lesion and can amount to a rate of more than 50% when full thickness is involved. The treatment remains controversial -- both surgical and conservative managements are described. Minor lesions can be controlled with nonsurgical treatment, but large defects require early surgery. We report the case of a female newborn with acrania and scalp ap

Membranous aplasia cutis is characterized by the presence of a cystic-like nodule located at the midline of the scalp, which is surrounded by a ring of long, dark hair, called a 'hair collar' sign; it always contributes to underlying central nervous malformation. Herein, we report a 2-month-old male infant who was admitted to our ward due to diabetes insipidus complicated with hypernatremia. Physical examination revealed the unique 'hair collar' sign, which is a rare presentation of congenital aplasia cutis. Imaging study revealed holoprosencephaly. Thus, the aim of this report is to remind pe

INTRODUCTION: In 1968, Rapp and Hodgkin described a family (a mother and her son and daughter) with a combination of dysplasic hair, nails, … nounced, and with a segmentary distribution.
DISCUSSION: We report two new cases of Rapp-Hodgkin's ectodermal dysplasia. We suspect a mosaicism in the father who may be the first and sporadic case of the family. These discret forms are frequently misdiagnosed and we hope we have provided some new elements which will help in the description of this rare disease. Early …

Dichorionic placentation is observed in both monozygotic (MZ) and dizygotic (DZ) twinning, while monochorionic placentation is unique to MZ twinning. Examinations of monochorionic twin placentas frequently reveal the presence of vascular anastomoses between the two fetal circulations; such anastomoses rarely occur in dichorionic placentas. Consequently, abnormalities resulting from placental vascular communications are almost exclusively observed in MZ twin pairs with monochorionic placentas. We report opposite-sex DZ twins in which vascular anastomoses occurred within a fused dichorionic plac

We present a catastrophic case of aplasia cutis congenita from a pregnancy complicated by elevated maternal serum and amniotic fluid alpha-fetoprotein levels and a positive acetylcholinesterase. Delivery occurred at 27 weeks 1 day after premature rupture of membranes with chorioamnionitis. The neonate lacked > 90% of its skin and died.

The purpose of the present investigation was to consider possible aetiological aspects of mandibular tooth agenesis by comparing the pattern of mandibular molar and premolar agenesis with radiological evidence of the mandibular canal. Orthopantomograms from 33 children affected by agenesis of at least four premolar and/or molar teeth in the mandible were investigated. Three children were affected by ectodermal dysplasia. Two anthropological mandibles with absence of mandibular canals were included in the study for comparison. According to the investigation, agenesis should be divided into thre…

DNA-repair is a complex enzymatic process which enables all living cells to withstand the deleterious and mutagenic effects of most genotoxic agents. Defective DNA-repair is caused by mutations involving genes which encode the enzymes responsible for recognition and excision of DNA lesions. Some of these genes have been identified in humans. Several severe human diseases are caused by defective DNA repair affecting the entire genome (e.g. xeroderma pigmentosum and trichotiodystrophy) or only actively transcribed genes (Cockayne's syndrome). Some of these conditions are associated with extremel

A case of focal dermal hypoplasia (FDH) or Goltz syndrome is described. The patient is a black female infant whose syndrome was first diagnosed at birth. This is a disorder of the mesoectoderm which is manifested by pigmentary skin changes similar to other disease entities, eg, incontinentia pigmenti and Rothmund-Thomson disease, but it is easily confirmed by specific significant histologic findings. The characteristic features are all noted in this infant throughout her follow-up, viz, atrophy and linear pigmentation of the skin, localized alopecia, papilloma and marked syndactyly. FDH is an
