The effects of hydrogen sulphide (H(2)S) and isoeugenol exposure on activity, oxygen consumption (VO(2)), ventilation frequency (Vf) and cytochrome c oxidase activity in a teleost fish are reported. In H(2)S (200 microM Na(2)S) exposed animals VO(2) and Vf decreased significantly (both to 40% of resting) after 30 min, concurrent with a loss of equilibrium and narcosis. The effects of acute exposure to acrylonitrile (ACN), 10, 20, or 40 mg/kg by gavage, on the ability of metrazol (MTZ) to induce seizures was studied in adult, male Sprague-Dawley rats. Citrate synthase and cytochrome c increase in soleus muscle of rats in response to excess thyroid hormones. The half times of the increase in the levels of citrate synthase and cytochrome c in soleus muscle during induction are greater than the half times of the decline in enzyme levels after cessation of treatment (15 days vs. 7 days for citrate synthase). The activity of the membrane-bound ascorbate-TMPD oxidase in Pseudomonas putida varies with growth conditions and age of the culture. A comparison of the effects of cyanide and azide on the oxidation of various substrates suggests that ascorbate-TMPD oxidase is not the terminal oxidase for NADH or succinate oxidation. However, it does have a role in the oxidation of nicotinate, and may act as an additional terminal oxidase under certain other growth conditions.
