[Metabolic states at athletes in the strenuous muscular activity of variable character].

Investigated dynamics of metabolic conditions at athletes in strenuous muscular activity of variable character. The sportsmen of high qualification specializing in bicycle and skating sports, performed in vitro work on a bicycle ergometer at level of critical power at the maximum consumption of oxygen. In two additional series of experiences each of examinees has performed work on critical power by the initial accelerations making 28% from limiting duration of exercise of 45 and 108 seconds. At work on critical power on a course of performance of exercise consecutive change of metabolic condit

Exploring the consequences of mitochondrial differences arising through hybridization of sunfish.

Previous studies have shown evidence of genomic incompatibility and mitochondrial enzyme dysfunction in hybrids of bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus Rafinesque) and pumpkinseed (Lepomis gibbosus Linnaeus) sunfish (Davies et al., 2012 Physiol. Biochem. Zool. 85, 321-331). We assessed if these differences in mitochondria had an impact on metabolic processes that depend on mitochondrial function, specifically hypoxia tolerance and recovery from burst exercise. Bluegill, pumpkinseed, and their hybrids showed no difference in the critical oxygen tension (Pcrit) and no differences in tissue metabolites

The effect of interval and continuous aerobic training on exercise capacity and health-related quality of life in people with coronary artery DISEASE: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Aerobic exercise is a fundamental component of cardiac rehabilitation in individuals with coronary artery disease (CAD). However, the comparative effects of interval and continuous aerobic training on exercise capacity and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) remain under debate. METHODS: This randomized controlled trial included 40 patients with clinically stable coronary artery disease. Participants were randomly assigned to either interval aerobic training or continuous aerobic training for six weeks. The 6-min walk test (6MWT) was used to evaluate exercise capacity, and the

Comparison between breathing and aerobic exercise on clinical control in patients with moderate-to-severe asthma: protocol of a randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Asthma is a chronic inflammatory airway disease characterized by reversible obstruction, inflammation and hyperresponsiveness to different stimulus. Aerobic and breathing exercises have been demonstrated to benefit asthmatic patients; however, there is no evidence comparing the effectiveness of these treatments. METHODS/DESIGN: This is a prospective, comparative, blinded, and randomized clinical trial with 2 groups that will receive distinct interventions. Forty-eight asthmatic adults with optimized medical treatment will be randomly divided into either aerobic (AG) or breathing e

Cardiovascular effects of ICI 118,587, a new beta-adrenoceptor partial agonist in man.

Effects of a new selective beta1 partial agonist, ICI 118,587, on cardiac function were assessed in clinical settings. In 7 patients, respon … he symptom-limited maximal oxygen consumption increased by 16%, associated with prolongation of the exercise tolerance. In those patients who also had symptoms of angina pectoris, exercise levels which caused angina during the control study were tolerated without symptoms after ICI 118,587. Twelve patients with nocturnal bradycardia resulting from atrial fibrillatio …

Appetite Perception and Cerebral Blood Flow in Aging Adults Following a Single Bout of Exercise.

Insulin acts in the brain to promote satiety. Aging individuals may have brain insulin resistance and altered appetite perceptions. However, it is unclear if exercise impacts cerebral reward centers and appetite perception in middle-aged to older individuals. Purpose: To assess whether a single exercise bout alters cerebral blood flow (CBF) in reward centers in relation to appetite perceptions. Methods: Fifteen sedentary adults (12F; ~56 ± 2y; ~31 ± 1 kg/m2) completed a control and acute exercise condition (70% maximal oxygen consumption) in a randomized, counterbalanced order in the evening.

Fatal heart block due to mesothelioma of the atrioventricular node.

A fit young man of 23 was symptom free until the time of his death despite a narrow complex complete heart block, with resting heart rates down to 35 beats/min, that was first diagnosed when he was 10. The clinical diagnosis remained congenital heart block. Necropsy showed extensive infiltration of the atrioventricular node and proximal bundle by mesothelioma tissue. Pacing had not been advised because of his excellent exercise tolerance.

Atrioventricular valve replacement in the idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome.

Three patients with the idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome and the associated endocardiopathy are described who underwent atrioventricular valve replacement after intractable congestive heart failure secondary to valvular dysfunction developed. Following valve replacement, all three patients sustained striking improvement in exercise tolerance and control of congestive heart failure. Thus, atrioventricular valve replacement may be beneficial to selected patients with congestive heart failure associated with the endocardial process of the idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome.

Muscle adenylate deaminase deficiency. Report of six new cases.

We describe six adult patients (five men and one woman) out of 364 whose muscle biopsy specimens disclosed muscle adenylate deaminase deficiency. Two men had an associated dermatomyositis and another man had an associated progressive systemic sclerosis. Although the patients were different clinically, all complained of muscular weakness or poor exercise tolerance. The occurrence of muscle adenylate deaminase deficiency in both sexes suggests a possible autosomal mode of inheritance.

Optimal aerobic exercise dose for improving metabolic health and functional outcomes in frail older adults: A systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Aerobic exercise potentially mitigates frailty, yet its definitive efficacy and optimal prescription parameters remain unclear. This study aimed to quantify the efficacy and dose-response relationship of aerobic exercise on frailty and health outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials involving adults ≥60 years with frailty or pre-frailty (searched through March 2026). Heterogeneous exercise protocols were standardized to metabolic equivalent (MET)-minutes/week. We employed random-effects models for

Exercise intolerance in patients with congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries relates to right ventricular filling pressures.

BACKGROUND: Patients with congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries (ccTGA) have significantly reduced exercise tolerance. Progressive right ventricular (RV) dysfunction with tricuspid regurgitation (TR) and other haemodynamic lesions are common among them. We hypothesised that interaction of these factors may result in increased systemic RV filling pressure, which in turn impact on exercise capacity. METHODS: Patients with ccTGA in functional class I or II, able to perform treadmill exercise and without resting cyanosis were enrolled. All patients underwent cardiopulmonary e…
