Pregnant women with heart disease: Placental characteristics and their association with fetal adverse events.

BACKGROUND: Pregnant women with heart disease (HD) have higher rates of adverse fetal outcomes. We describe placental pathologic characteristics and their association with fetal events. METHODS: In pregnant women, known HD were categorized into: (1) cardiomyopathy (CM) or (2) other HD (congenital, coronary, arrhythmia, or valvular). Outcomes were maternal major adverse cardiac events (MACE), fetal adverse clinical events (FACE), a composite of infant death, prematurity, underweight status, intracranial hemorrhage, and respiratory distress. Only pathologically reported placental analyses were

Cord blood irisin levels are positively correlated with birth weight in newborn infants.

BACKGROUND: Irisin is a novel myokine, secreted from skeletal muscle after exercise. Irisin mediates exercise-related energy expenditure by turning white adipose tissue (WAT) into brown adipose tissue (BAT). Thus, irisin is considered as a potential biomarker for obesity and metabolic syndrome. Infants born small for gestational age (SGA) have increased risk for metabolic syndrome. However, the physiologic role of irisin in neonates remains to be studied. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association of umbilical cord blood irisin levels with gestational age and birth weight categories in neonates.

Lipid metabolism during pregnancy and its implications for fetal growth.

More glucose crosses the placenta than any other substrate, but correlations between its concentration in maternal plasma and fetal growth are not found consistently. The accumulation of maternal fat depots and hyperlipidemia are the two principal changes in lipid metabolism during pregnancy. Although lipids cross the placenta with difficulty, maternal plasma triacylglycerols (TAG) and non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) correlate with fetal lipids, fetal growth and fat mass under certain conditions. In intrauterine growth restriction, impaired placental transfer of lipophilic compounds (long-ch

Growth assessment in diagnosis of Fetal Growth Restriction. Review.

The assessment of fetal growth represents a fundamental step towards the identification of the true growth restricted fetus that is associated to important perinatal morbidity and mortality. The possible ways of detecting abnormal fetal growth are taken into consideration in this review and their strong and weak points are discussed. An important debate still remains about how to discriminate between the physiologically small fetus that does not require special surveillance and the truly growth restricted fetus who is predisposed to perinatal complications, even if its parameters are above the

Comparative proteomic profile of the human placenta in normal and fetal growth restriction subjects.

BACKGROUND: Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is the main cause of intrauterine fetal death and the second leading cause of death in the neonatal period. A large body of evidence suggests that FGR may be associated with the placenta, although its etiology and pathogenesis remain to be fully elucidated. METHODS AND RESULTS: To better understand the molecular mechanisms underlying the pathological development of the placenta in FGR, we used tandem mass tags (TMTs) to construct a large-scale comparative proteomic profile of human placentas from normal and FGR pregnancies. A total of 1,198 kinds of

First trimester origins of fetal growth impairment.

The timing of factors that lead to disorders of fetal growth have been studied for many years. Previous studies have focused on disorders of the "second wave" of trophoblast invasion of myometrial arterioles and on fetal weight gain in the third trimester. Over the last 5 years, clinical studies have shown associations between first trimester ultrasound and biochemical parameters and the risk of later adverse perinatal outcome. First trimester growth restriction is associated with an increased risk of low birth weight, low birth weight percentile for gestational age and extremely preterm birth

Parathyroid hormone-related protein in preeclampsia: a linkage between maternal and fetal failures.

Preeclampsia is a disorder associated with pregnancy that affects both the mother and the fetus. Typical features of the disease are maternal hypertension, proteinuria, and edema as well as fetal growth retardation. Although the etiological details are still being debated, a consensus exists that the starting point is deficient placentation in the first half of pregnancy. The crucial early steps are reduced trophoblast invasiveness and enhanced apoptotic death. In the present review, we demonstrate that parathyroid hormone-related protein is involved not only in the maternal and fetal failures

Impact Of Prenatal Administration Of Melamine On Foetal Growth In Rats.

BACKGROUND: Data on the potential effects of maternal exposure to melamine is scarce. We aimed to evaluate the impact of melamine administration on pregnancy outcome and foetal growth in rats. METHODS: Positively-mated female Sprague-Dawley rats (n=24) were treated from day 6 to day 20 of gestation with vehicle (control), melamine 300 mg/kg/day (group-1) or melamine 450 mg/kg/day (group 2). On day 21, the numbers of foetal resorptions and dead foetuses were recorded. Thereafter, pups were examined for external anomalies, and various growth parameters were measured. RESULTS: A remarkable incr

Effects of prenatal iron deficiency on neurological development and related disorders in offspring.

The fetal origins of adult disease hypothesis proposes that a variety of adverse stimuli during critical development stages can impair the structure and function of fetal organs, thereby increasing the risk of disease later in life. Iron affects fetal growth and development by facilitating oxygen and electron transport and by serving as a cofactor for enzymes that affect enzyme activity. Fetal iron deficiency (ID) can result from various factors during pregnancy, including inadequate maternal iron intake, maternal obesity, diabetes, smoking, prenatal stress, and prenatal alcohol exposure. Thes

Sequencing of mRNA identifies re-expression of fetal splice variants in cardiac hypertrophy.

Cardiac hypertrophy has been well-characterized at the level of transcription. During cardiac hypertrophy, genes normally expressed primarily during fetal heart development are re-expressed, and this fetal gene program is believed to be a critical component of the hypertrophic process. Recently, alternative splicing of mRNA transcripts has been shown to be temporally regulated during heart development, leading us to consider whether fetal patterns of splicing also reappear during hypertrophy. We hypothesized that patterns of alternative splicing occurring during heart development are recapitul

Intrauterine environment and polycystic ovary syndrome.

The maternal-fetal environment plays an important role in developmental programming of adult disease. Metabolic and hormonal dysfunction during human fetal development accompanies gestational diabetes as a common occurrence in mothers with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), while human fetal androgen excess from congenital adrenal hyperplasia or virilizing tumors precedes PCOS-like symptoms after birth. To date, clinical studies of infant blood levels at term have yet to confirm that human fetal androgen excess promotes PCOS development after birth. Earlier in development, however, circulating …

Fetal programming through early weaning shapes the metabotype of Nelore heifers.

This study investigated the effects of fetal programming induced by early weaning (EW) of the previous calf on the serum metabotype of Nelore heifers. A 2 × 2 factorial design was employed, considering maternal category (multiparous vs. second-parity) and weaning strategy [EW vs. conventional weaning (CW)]. A total of 55 heifers were evaluated, including 25 born to cows subjected to EW (15 multiparous, 10 second-parity) and 30 born to cows subjected to CW (15 multiparous, 15 second-parity). Serum samples were collected from heifers at an average age of 14 months prior to the initiation pf the

Change in diameters of the small intestine according to embryonic and early fetal growth.

No previous studies have examined the diameter of the small intestine successively from the oral to the anal side of the small intestine. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to determine the successive intestinal diameters from the oral to the anal side (proximal to the distal) of the intestine, evaluate changes in diameter associated with growth, examine the effects of positional variation along the intestinal tract, investigate dynamic positional change from the extraembryonic coelom to the abdominal cavity, and assess the impact of complex tertiary intestinal loop formation. Modeling the human placenta: in vitro applications in developmental and reproductive toxicology.

During its temporary tenure, the placenta has extensive and specialized functions that are critical for pre- and post-natal development. The consequences of chemical exposure in utero can have profound effects on the structure and function of pregnancy-associated tissues and the life-long health of the birthing person and their offspring. However, the toxicological importance and critical functions of the placenta to embryonic and fetal development and maturation have been understudied. This narrative will review early placental development in humans and highlight some in vitro models currentl…

Enteric neuronal development in canine small intestine - an immunohistochemical study.

The development of the enteric nervous system (ENS) is still a valid and intensely studied issue. However, literature in the field has no data on this topic in the dog. The present investigations were performed in three groups of fetuses from mongrel dogs - from the third, sixth- -seventh, and ninth week of pregnancy - and in 3-5-day-old puppies (3 specimens for each age group). The tissues (the medial parts of the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum with the cecum and a small portion of the adjacent ascending colon) were cut using a cryostat and the sections were processed for single- and double-lab

Vermiform Appendix During the Repackaging Process from Umbilical Herniation to Fixation onto the Right Posterior Abdomen: A Study of Human Fetal Horizontal Sections.

The anatomical position of the vermiform appendix varies among adults, and these variations are responsible for differences in the symptoms of appendicitis. However, to date no study has examined how and when these variations occur during fetal development. The present study examined horizontal sections of 27 midterm fetuses (crown rump length [CRL] 38-97 mm, gestational age approximately 8-15 weeks). There were 10 fetuses (CRL 56 mm or more) in which the cecum and appendix were in a posterosuperior site near the right kidney (postmigration phase), and 12 fetuses (CRL 39-72 mm) in which the il…

Physiological development of the equine fetus during late gestation.

In many species, the pattern of growth and physiological development in utero has an important role in determining not only neonatal viability but also adult phenotype and disease susceptibility. Changes in fetal development induced by a range of environmental factors including maternal nutrition, disease, placental insufficiency and social stresses have all been shown to induce adult cardiovascular and metabolic dysfunction that often lead to ill health in later life. Compared to other precocious animals, much less is known about the physiological development of the fetal horse or the longer-…
