This study investigated the pathogenesis of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) using histological methods that are commonly used for ath … rs of macrophages near the RPE and in the choroid relative to normal (P < 0.1). Macrophages-derived foam cells were detected near the Bruch's membrane in late AMD. Therefore, the present study showed many histological characteristics of ASVD in AMD, which suggests an association between them; however, there were also some histological characteristics of ASVD …

RATIONALE: Therapeutically targeting macrophage reverse cholesterol transport is a promising approach to treat atherosclerosis. Macrophage energy metabolism can significantly influence macrophage phenotype, but how this is controlled in foam cells is not known. Bioinformatic pathway analysis predicts that miR-33 represses a cluster of genes controlling cellular energy metabolism that may be important in macrophage cholesterol efflux.
OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized that cellular energy status can influence cholesterol efflux from macrophages, and that miR-33 reduces cholesterol efflux via repressi…

INTRODUCTION: Monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 is a bioactive molecule that is expressed in significant amounts in all stages of atherosclerosis. The role of monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 in this disease is to recruit monocytes across the endothelium and into the arterial tissue. Eventually, the monocytes differentiate into cholesterol-engorged macrophages called "foam cells" that result in atherosclerotic plaque formation. The mechanism that monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 uses to mediate monocyte transendothelial migration is believed to be via its concentration gradient. However, …

Atherosclerosis is an inflammatory disease. The atherosclerosis process starts when low-density lipoproteins (LDLs) enter the intima of the blood vessel, where they are oxidized (ox-LDLs). The anti-inflammatory response triggers the recruitment of monocytes. Once in the intima, the monocytes are transformed into macrophages and foam cells, leading to the production of inflammatory cytokines and further recruitment of monocytes. This auto-amplified process leads to the formation of an atherosclerotic plaque and, possibly, to its rupture. In this paper we develop two mathematical models based on…

Atherosclerosis is an advancing and complex vascular condition primarily associated with sustained inflammatory responses, oxidative imbalance, and disruptions in lipid homeostasis. These pathological features render it a major contributor to the global burden of cardiovascular disease, encompassing both morbidity and mortality. Traditional treatment modalities, including statins, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, PCSK9 inhibitors and surgical procedures, frequently encounter limitations due to inefficient pharmacokinetic profiles, insufficient targeting of pathological sites and wides

Acidic electrolyzed water (AcEW) was used as frozen AcEW (AcEW-ice) for inactivation of Listeria monocytogenes and Escherichia coli O157:H7 on lettuce. AcEW-ice was prepared from AcEW with 20, 50, 100, and 200 ppm of available chlorine by freezing at -40 degrees C and generated 30, 70, 150, and 240 ppm of chlorine gas (Cl2), respectively. The AcEW-ice was placed into styrene-foam containers with lettuce samples at 20 degrees C for 24 h. Although AcEW-ice generating 30 ppm Cl2 had no effect on L. monocytogenes cell counts, AcEW-ice generating 70 to 240 ppm of Cl2 significantly (P < 0.05) reduce

The advanced lithium-sulfur (LiS) batteries are hindered by lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) shuttling. Herein, a flexible self-supporting hybrid current collector dual coupled with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets and tin disulfide (SnS2) nanoparticles is rationally constructed via facile hydrothermal and pyrolysis. Aside from generating a three-dimensional (3D) conductive framework, this current collector provides plentiful active sites conducive to sulfur loading. The intimate coupling of polar SnS2, high conductive rGO and robust carbon foam skeleton builds a good interfacial engineerin

Toward achieving sustainable carbon neutralization, converting CO2 via electrocatalysis into premium multicarbon (C2+) feedstocks represents a critical strategy. However, copper (Cu)-based catalysts frequently suffer from severe dynamic surface reconstruction and limited C2+ selectivity under highly negative operational potentials. Herein, we report an interfacial covalent confinement strategy by designing a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS)-encapsulated cauliflower-like catalyst on a copper foam (CF) skeleton (CuxO@PDMS/CF). The conformal PDMS overlayer physically constructs a "carbon-rich, water

Algal and microbial proteins constitute a vast, still underexploited pool of sustainable biomolecules with growing relevance to the future of alternative proteins. This chapter critically reviews the taxonomic, biochemical, and structural diversity of microalgae, cyanobacteria, yeasts, filamentous fungi, and bacterial platforms currently used for single-cell protein (SCP) production. Particular emphasis is placed on recent advances in extraction and downstream processing, including mechanical, enzymatic, chemical, and membrane-based strategies, to improve protein recovery while preserving stru

Recently, macrophage senescence has been identified as an important pathological risk factor for atherosclerosis (AS). Oxymatrine (OMT) has demonstrated potential in ameliorating cellular senescence. This study aims to investigate the pharmacological properties and underlying mechanisms of OMT in alleviating AS progression. High-fat diet-fed ApoE-/- mice and oxLDL-induced macrophage senescence models were used to study OMT's effects in vivo and in vitro. Furthermore, OMT's mechanisms were investigated using network pharmacology, pharmacological intervention, gene silencing, molecular docking,

BACKGROUND: Fibronectin glomerulopathy (FGP), also known as fibronectin deposition glomerulopathy (GFND), is a rare hereditary autosomal dominant glomerular disease. Its clinical manifestations are proteinuria, hematuria, hypertension, and hyperkalemic distal renal tubular acidosis, which often progresses slowly to end-stage renal disease.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a 21-year-old woman with fibronectin glomerulopathy who underwent renal puncture at the age of 10. The pathology was considered to be thrombotic microangiopathy, and it was not treated regularly. This time, renal puncture was per

Fusobacterium nucleatum is a Gram-negative anaerobe that occupies a central ecological niche in oral biofilms but has emerged as a trans-compartmental pathogen implicated in gastrointestinal and cardiovascular diseases. In inflammatory bowel diseases, Fusobacterium nucleatum adheres to the intestinal epithelium via adhesins such as FadA, disrupts tight junctions, and induces Toll-like receptor-mediated inflammatory cascades, amplifying epithelial permeability and sustaining mucosal inflammation. In colorectal cancer, Fusobacterium nucleatum promotes carcinogenesis through multiple mechanisms,

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) affects 90% of diabetes cases and worsens cardiovascular health by causing oxidative stress, which leads to oxidized LDL (oxLDL) and foam cell formation, contributing to atherosclerosis. This study examined the relationship between CD36 gene variants, soluble CD36 (sCD36), oxLDL, and MDA-LDL in T2DM and ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STE-T2DM) patients in western Mexico. The analysis included 400 T2DM patients, 400 STE-T2DM patients, and 400 healthy controls. Results showed that STE-T2DM patients were older, mainly male, and had higher rates of smok

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Plaque rupture is the underlying cause of most cardiovascular events, such as stroke and myocardial infarction. The co-stimulatory molecule LIGHT (tumor necrosis factor superfamily member 14, TNFSF14) has been detected in foam cell-rich regions of atherosclerotic plaques, but whether it has a role in plaque stability is not known. This study investigates the association between intraplaque LIGHT levels and plaque vulnerability.
METHODS: LIGHT levels were measured in homogenates of carotid endarterectomy samples by proximity extension assay (n=202) and through bulk RNA

Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting medium and large arteries, characterized by lipid ectopic deposition in arterial wall, whose pathogenesis is closely associated with persistent excessive inflammatory responses. Isolinderalactone (ILL), the primary active sesquiterpene lactone component derived from the traditional Chinese medicine Lindera aggregata, has been demonstrated to possess significant anti-inflammatory and anti-proliferative activities. This study aims to investigate the therapeutic potential of ILL in atherosclerosis and its underlying molecular mechanisms.

Elevated emissions of flue gases deteriorate the quality of air, impacting both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems through their contribution to acid rain and eutrophication. This study examines the bio-mitigation process in a packed bed reactor and its capacity to concurrently decrease the environmental consequences of industrial flue gases (CO2, NO, and SO2) and wastewater by employing mixed bacterial consortia. The highest biomass productivity achieved during the growth phase was 0.002 g L-1 h-1 in the aqueous medium and 0.006 g L-1 h-1 in the PU foam. The highest level of CO2 removal effic

PURPOSE: The early, precise, and safe management of vulnerable atherosclerotic plaques (VAPs) remains a formidable clinical challenge. Here, we present a targeted nanotherapeutic approach in which osteopontin-targeted nanoparticles encapsulate luteolin (NPs-Lut) for the precise delivery and treatment of VAPs. This engineered system enables site-specific accumulation and sustained release of luteolin at plaque sites.
METHODS: We innovatively constructed an osteopontin-targeted drug delivery system designed for vulnerable atherosclerotic plaques, in which luteolin and atorvastatin were successf

The leaching of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) from Australian firefighting training grounds has resulted in extensive contamination of groundwater and nearby farmlands. Humans, farm animals, and wildlife in these areas may have been exposed to complex mixtures of PFASs from aqueous film-forming foams (AFFFs). This study aimed to identify PFAS classes in pooled whole blood (n = 4) and serum (n = 4) from cattle exposed to AFFF-impacted groundwater and potentially discover new PFASs in blood. Thirty PFASs were identified at various levels of confidence (levels 1a-5a), including thre
